My first LCD monitor. First impression was great, but then:
Picture is very contrasty. The auto setting puts the brightness to it's max, but it needs more range. I could live with that, but also..

5.0 out of 5 stars LCD flat screen reduces eye strain & headaches, August 29, 2001

I just bought one of these for $... and it totally reinvents the quality of your interaction with the computer. Why ? Because the individual pixels are extremely crisp in their presentation, which gives your eyes a more relaxed in-focus feeling. Next, the display is flat, and that opens up your desktop in a way that is most pleasant, and gets the screen AWAY from your eyes which reduces eye strain. NEXT, the unit has no TV-set flicker as regular monitors do, thereby reducing headaches. The elimination of electromagnetic and gamma radiation is also beneficial as there is no electron gun. As to me, I hucked out my CRT monitor and will never go back.. The reduction in headaches & eye strain is immediate & obvious. Passers-by also greatly admire the image.

However, an NEC LCD 1830 is only for the technologically knowledgeable, and here is why: If you don't set it up and use it properly, it will deliver an image worse than a regular CRT. Think of the flat-panel field of LCD pixels as better, yet less forgiving of technical errors.
Firstly, you have to understand that the native resolution is 1280 x 1024 (1.3 million pixels) and you must drive it as such from the computer. If you don't properly match to the 1830's native resolution, instead of razor-sharp individual pixel crispness, the image will be interpolated and look poor. Many a fool has presumed these displays to be inferior to the CRT's, only because they didn't operate them at native resolution.

Nextly, you have to understand that the NEC 1830 is a value-oriented product and therefore has a good ole' fashioned RGB ANALOG (standard 15-pin) monitor interface. When the analog signal clocks in, it behaves much different from the CRT, in that there can be a mismatch between the changes in the clock and the changes of the analog value. THEREFORE the LCD 1830 includes an on-screen menu adjustment to adjust the dot-clock delay timing relation between the RGB data and clock. This is the 4th menu option and it is just below "H. Size". This adjustment is NOT adequately described by NEC and if you fail to carefully make this adjustment you will NOT get sharpness down to the single pixel. Admittedly the full-digital interfaces coming out will solve this but that topic is not in widespread manufacture here in Summer 2001.

Except for the lack of emphasis on the dot-clock delay adjustment, the built-in menu is notably pleasant and easy to use... unlike various competitors. Also you are vulnerable to whether your analog cable was wired well, or poorly, and I have seen variations in pixel sharpness with different cables. Again the digitally driven versions to be seen in future years avoid those worries. Meanwhile the 15-pin analog cable is a universal and entirely safe thing to invest into so I bought into the 1830 without hesitation.

The value and sharpness is incredible and was the best of the LCD flat-panels around $.... If you want the best then this is it.

You must also make a point of turning it off when not in use as all of this incredible good fortune comes at the expense of flourescent backlighting. If you leave it on 24 hrs/day the factory says you will get about 5 years and then the bulb must be replaced in Georgia.

If you are the least bit demanding about visual sharpness, and if you are tired of headaches and eye-strain from traditional monitors, then this LCD 1830 is the best bang for the buck here in Summer 2001. You will be wise to select a black-frame unit rather than the white-frame as it better offsets the crisp, photographically high-quality image.

I hope you enjoy this new technology as much as I do. I shouldn't tell you this because I will be buying a 2nd for another machine, and I actually don't need your competition on the limited supply.

I spent the last 10 years of my employment with the San Bernardino County GIMS department in front of a computer loading tract and historical survey information into a usable, modern database for public and professional access. I wish they had provided me with this fantastic monitor! I have never had such clarity of images and print! Since the resolution is better relative to the viewable size (21" old vs 18.1" new), it's taken some getting used to. But I will NEVER go back to the old CRT type of display, regardless of price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor, January 9, 2002

This is my first flat-screen LCD monitor other than on a laptop. The monitor is crisp without the slightest sign of jitter -- A big improvement over earlier analog-interface units. I have not experienced any of the noise or backlight yellowing issues described by other reviewers. This leads me to believe that these problems were caused by sample defects or improper handling before or during shipment. I will definitely not be going back to a CRT.

Amazon, as always, handles the transaction and shipping flawlessly.

3.0 out of 5 stars actually it is a pretty bad one, only if you look carefully, December 31, 2001
This review is from: NEC MultiSync LCD1830-BK 18" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
did a lot of research and decided to buy this model. noticed one problem: the brightness on the screen is nor even. this is expecially obvious if you open a file which has one-color background. Say, you open your word before typing anything. Also, this becomes very obvious if you click autoadjust button, and the screen becomes blank for a couple of seconds, you will see the brightness/lighting is not evenly distributed. My friend bought the same thing, and he did not even notice. After I told him and we found out both monitor have the same problem. Also checked some older model and noticed the similar problem.
So, it seems to us this is a big problem, and possibly some other people who do graphic design, web design. However, some people who do not care about this feature, then this might not be a problem for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice!, December 27, 2001

this is a very clear monitor. Its very nice. The only thing that bothers me is the flourescent background light which buzzes rather loudley if it is set on anything less than total brightness-not always but most of the time I try to change it. The NEC rep told me that the noise should be minimal and that my monitor may be defective. I think ill keep it. with a three year warrenty If it is defective then its covered. I recommend this monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1830 BK, February 14, 2002
This review is from: NEC MultiSync LCD1830-BK 18" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
The best price/performance ratio monitor on the market... much better resolution and clarity than other brands...just go into a store sometime and look at the picture of all the brands side by side; this one will stand out as the sharpest. I use Cambridge Sound Works speakers, anyway....I'm glad NEC slashed their prices a few months ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the work space, February 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: NEC MultiSync LCD1830-BK 18" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
Unfortunately, I was forced to look outside of Apple products to source a new monitor. Fortunately for me, I came across this NEC beauty. It works great with my mac. The setup was effortless. I can't imagine going back to a CRT after this. My workspace is uncluttered and the large screen tilts easily for optimum positioning. I have had no problems with dead pixels, or blurred video. Everyone who sees it comments on how large the live area is and how crisp text looks.
The price was great - and actually it's even better than what I paid 6 months ago. I highly recommend this monitor to anyone who craves desk space, a crisp clear display and the admiration of friends and colleagues!

3.0 out of 5 stars dual input monitor adapters!, February 10, 2002

This review is from: NEC MultiSync LCD1830-BK 18" LCD Monitor (Electronics)
I have two machines at home, one running windows xp and the other one running Linux/Windows 98. They are both plugged into
this LCD display! There is a switch on the display that allows you to switch from Input 1 to Input 2 and vice versa. Of course, you could you use a switch box instead if you decided to get a different monitor/lcd display. However, the switch box kind of degrade the resolution; so I have experienced.

The quality of picture on this unit is amazing. I cannot be happier. I set its angle down a bit to reduce the glare. By doing so I noticed the picture display is better (based on my preference).

It's so easy to setup as well. There is a compartment on the back that allows you to hide the two input cables + 1 power cord. This display is a space saver as well.

This is one of my best buys!
