4.0 out of 5 stars Review of NECA Claptrap action figure June 9, 2012
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is an action figure of the Claptrap robot from the Borderlands video game franchise. I've wanted this toy for quite some time as a "flavor" item for my desk, but it has not been easy to track down. The action figure itself looks great, reflecting the 'cel-shaded' look of the video game. The paint job is really outstanding. It is of a nice size, standing roughly 4 inches tall, and being about 3 inches deep. It comes with a base upon which it will 'stand' with the assistance of a thin vertical bar of plastic hidden behind the figure that extends up from the base and 'plugs' into a socket in the figure's back to hold it upright. It's arms are articulated at the shoulders (though the range of motion is a little limited) and the elbows. The arms do feel a bit fragile, being quite thin. The antenna at the back of the figure's "head" extends and retracts. The plates covering his shoulders are hinged and swing up and down, as does the "eyelid" above its eye. The "drawer" does not open.

Now criticisms, which on the whole are relatively minor.

This toy is relatively hard to find. It has been solicited as forthcoming for a couple of years, but it's somewhat scarce. It's kind of a novelty, and the sellers' price solidly reflects that. Based on the actual build of the toy, I'd think it should have been fifteen or twenty bucks. Beyond that, you're paying for the novelty/scarcity of it. Perhaps my biggest gripe is that all the lead-up to the release of the toy said it would "talk", speaking characteristic phrases from the game. Let me be absolutely clear: this toy in no way talks or makes noise. Had it cheerfully said "Welcome, traveler!" and "I'm dancin'! I'm dancin'!" at the press of a button, it would, IMHO, have been justified a thirty-dollar price. My only other issue is that when the figure is attached to the base, the "connection" between the display post and the socket is a bit loose; it leans forward just slightly, as if the robot is speeding in forward motion (or at least, mine does this). You're viewing it slightly from above instead of straight on, and it appears he is looking well below your line of vision (at your belt, say). It's just odd, it does not look like he's engaging your eye. A somewhat minor presentation thing, but a little frustrating.

I really like the toy and will enjoy it on my desk for quite some time. And frankly, if I want a Claptrap on my desk, it's this or nothing (as far as I know). It is clearly intended as a display item though, and is not a proper toy, per se. Other than the arm bits (which seem fragile), the rest of the toy is quite solid, but it will likely not stand up to any real physical abuse. (EDIT: The packaging actually says "Age 17 & Up")

EDIT: After exerting some force on it, I discovered the eye *does* in fact swivel up and down. It's just SO stiff right out of the package that it feels immovable, and there is nothing on the packaging indicating that it moves. It took enough pushing to make it move that I was fearful of breaking it. But it does move. And thus one of my complaints is mostly eliminated (review has been edited to reflect this). The robot still leans forward when supported on the base (more than I think it should), but by raising the eye he now looks far better for display; he no longer looks like he's bent over, staring intently at the ground. Similarly, his wheel is very stiff but can be turned by hand with a little force; it is not (and was probably not intended to be) free-rolling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice collectors piece July 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This piece is very detailed and very nice. Great for Borderlands fans. The antenna extendable antenna is EXTREMELY fragile so be careful with it! Also, and the main reason I gave this figure a 3 is that IT DOES NOT TALK! AT ALL! Despite what the figure description says, this figure DOES NOT speak any phrases from the game. I repeat, THIS FIGURE DOES NOT MAKE ANY SOUND WHATSOEVER! My guess is NECA planned to have it make sound and then decided against it after the ads were released. So $35 is a pretty steep price for a soundless figure

1.0 out of 5 stars False advertising July 18, 2012
Durability: 2.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I waited forever for this action figure and the title states that it's a talking action figure. It was supposed to say phrases from the game. It doesn't talk!!!! It doesn't do much of anything. They should charge less or change the product title and description!!!
