Great Lens for Eight Bucks!,

Based off of the two reviews I was unsure how good of a lens attachment I would be receiving, but for $7.99 I threw the dice.
I received this lens attachment a few short days after ordering and it screwed onto the front of my 18 to 55mm (D60) lens without any issue. (the lens attachment is made of metal and glass -- it feels good and sturdy). After taking several photos I noticed that when set to the widest angle possible the corners vignette and get blurred. For some this might be a complete turn off, for others it might mean that you just found the best accessory to add to your camera bag for eight bucks. When set to just about any setting other than the widest no vignetting is noticable. I think it's a perfect new toy for anyone willing to experiment with accessories. If you want to see what the vignetting looks like here is a link to my official review along with numerous shots that I took with this lens. [...]

There seems to be a lot of confusion over this lens adapter. First of all, it's not a standalone lens, it's a lens adapter that screws onto the front of your existing lens. Second, the 52mm refers to what diameter filter thread this screws onto, not what focal length lens this mounts to. You can use this on any camera and lens as long as the lens has a 52mm filter thread on the front. If you want to know what diameter filter thread your lens has just look at the inside of the lens cap. It should say in there or there should be a number on the lens next to a diameter symbol that looks like this: Ø. The lens adapter includes two pieces. They can be used together to give you a wider angle view on your existing lens, or you can just use the macro filter part to take pictures of stuff close up. As far as image quality, if you're just using the macro filter without the wide-angle adapter it looks great. Not quite as good or as powerful magnification as a dedicated macro lens, but still it's very good for most purposes. If you've used a close-up filter before that's basically what this is. When using the wide angle adapter piece the center of the frame stays sharp and the edges are pretty blurry. There is also significant barrel distortion. If your subject is on the edge of your frame or you need to keep your lines straight then you won't like this lens adapter. But if you don't have those requirements or you don't mind sacrificing some image quality to get smaller size, lighter weight, and cheaper price, then this little adapter works quite well. It's a great economical way to try out wide angle or macro and see if it's something you might want to buy a dedicated lens for. It also works pretty well for minimalist kits such as a 35mm prime lens and shooting with shallow depth of field, since it usually doesn't matter if the edges are blurry. The biggest problem I have with this wide-angle adapter is that it claims to have a 0.45X magnification factor, but in reality I measured closer to 0.7X magnification. Mounted on a 35mm lens it looked more like 25mm or 26mm. 5 stars for value, -1 star because magnification is different than stated.

One of my photo students brought this wide-angle lens to class and I tried it. I was impressed enough with the few shots I took that I ordered my own lens from Amazon.
I tested mine on a Nikon digital SLR with an 18-55mm zoom lens and on a Canon G5 compact digital camera with a 35mm to 140mm zoom lens (35mm equiv). On the Nikon, this wide-angle lens expanded the wide-angle coverage of the 18mm focal length to something wider than 14mm. On the Canon, this wide-angle lens expanded the wide-angle coverage of the 35mm focal length to slightly wider than 28mm. The macro portion of this lens was similar in performance to my +10 diopter supplemental close-up lens (also called a close-up filter by some). After additional shots and tests, I can say without reservation--this lens produces decent quality wide-angle images and the macro portion produces decent quality close-up images. Yes, there is some darkening of the corners of the image (vignetting) and there is significant curving of straight lines (barreling) and there is some loss of detail on the edges. However, this lens is a great bargain and I will highly recommend it to future students.

I received the lens only 6 days after ordering it, and the initial results were great for the price of the lens. I tested it on a Nikon with a 18-55 kit lens and it vignetted the corners like expected but allowed me to capture more of the room with only a small amount of detail loss (which was only noticeable in photoshop when looking at the images @ 100%). Still testing the Macro mode, which seems to let you get extremely close. I think it's well worth the investment of $8.

I took the low-price bait and bought one for my new micro four-thirds Panasonic GF1 with 14-45mm kit lens (35mm equivalent of 28-90mm) hoping to get a usable wide angle adapter instead of spending over $1000 on the overpriced 7-14mm Panasonic lens. This adapter is certainly cheap, was delivered fast and seems nicely made for the price. It also has minimal vignetting even when setting the kit lens to 14mm and offers about a 1.5 times wider view. The reason for my one-star rating is that the image quality begins to degrade rapidly starting about half-way from the center in any direction and becomes a mushy blur near the edges. This degradation occurs for all focal lengths, even when zooming the kit lens to 45mm. This might be OK for prints of landscapes or cityscapes up to 3" x 5" or maybe 4" x 6" but will look like crap for anything larger, including any viewing on a monitor. If used to take a group photo the faces of those on the sides of the group will be unrecognizable! I don't see how this can be a useful piece of kit unless the desire is to blur most of image in each of your photos. Essentially, the extra part of the wide-angle image that is added to the photo by using this adaptor has worse image quality than that shot from the cheapest disposable camera.

i got this item with really low expectations because it was only $10, but honestly it is definitely better than i thought it would be. it probably won't produce the same results of an actual wide angle lens (as this is just an attachment to a lens at 52mm thread), but again it's only $10! sturdy metal body and the bag is pretty durable as well, as a college student who has a budget of pretty much $0 it's not a bad addition till i can get a fully functional wide angle lens.
oh and i got this for my nikon d3000 and it's snug like a glove EDIT 12/9/10: the macro part of the lens works great. i wouldn't recommend going out and doing wildlife pictures with it but still life or plant life would work great. to get the macro just unscrew the base (don't grip it and rip it, be gentle) and it'll come undone

The title sums it up. It's great for making a little artsy vignetting action, and has a slight fisheye effect. It makes edges blurry, but mainly only in low light. I I screwed it on to my Nikon D-series' 18-55 kit lens with no problems. It's a fun little attachment.

In all actuality I did not expect much from this lens at the price and was pleasently surprised. What I found GREAT about it was that it does not replace my excelent Nikon lenses it is an add on to your camera lens. So you get all of the advantages of your cameras lens plus the added bonus of the wide angle. I used it to take pictures at the US Marine Corps museum in Quantico where you had panaramic views but a limited distance to take the photo. Adding this wide angle attachment was just what the Dr ordered. Pictures came out GREAT. Doesn't take up much room in the camera bag. A BEST BUY! A MUST HAVE.

When I first came across this item I figured it wouldn't be like the sample pictures at all, or it wouldn't fit my lens since it wasn't on the list (Nikon D3100). but for under $10 I risked it. I just started getting into photography and wanted it as a novelty experimental attachment, best decision I've made. the lens came 4 days after it was ordered and it fit nicely on the kit lens. the wide angle and macro shots are pretty neat, not the best ever, but for the $380 price difference in professional lenses it takes the cake. the lens is also fitted with rings that come loose. i found out that if you unscrew the wide angle glass under the ring and flip it backwards it gives you the fisheye effect. other attachments cost $30-$40 so for under $10 I'm definitely ordering another to have instead of unscrewing and flipping it over and over. if your're not too picky about things that are "cheap" then i strongly suggest buying this. plus breaking a $10 attachment is alot less heartbreaking then breaking a $380 lens

I decided to roll the dice on one of these because it was dirt cheap and I figured at least the macro lens section would be useful. Turns out it might actually be useful. In case were you want a little extra width but don't want to carry another big lens, and can accept the degradation it might introduce (not too bad, from what I can tell) it should do the trick at a bargain price.
I got it to use on my Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens. On my D5000 this is about a 52mm equivalent on its own, this adapter makes it about 24mm. That's the upper end of my wide angle zoom but this adapter weighs a lot less and is a bit smaller than the 35mm lens. (While the zoom is one of the largest I own, in volume if not length.) Construction is a mixed bag. The heft makes it feel solid, but the front section rattles slightly when shaken. Doesn't look as if it affects it much - it's not a precision optical device. The threads are clean and it screwed onto my main lens smoothly. I'd give it three stars for quality, but I'm throwing in an extra one because it's so cheap. |
