Customer Reviews

I was apprehensive but gave it a chance.

The accompanying CDROM included dozens of driver INF and EXE files, with absolutely no explanation as to what they are, which to install for what computer system.

I did try two other IDE brands of older hard drives, which it also did Not recognize.

I got this because I have a lot of old hard drives I need to check. Rather than powering down my system or spending more money on a hot-swappable bay I liked the ease of the ISB dock.

This works perfectly for all my SATA drives. I haven't used the cloning software yet, but hope to try it as soon as I can afford to upgrade my HDD on my gaming system.

The IDE works most of the time. There is a lot of variance in physical design of IDE HDD. The location of the power on the docking station is moveable (about 1/4 inch worth of movement). This allows me to adapt the port for hard drives with the jumpers in between the data pins and the power pins. I have a few drives that have the jumpers on the outside and the power in the middle. There is not nearly enough movement in the docking station to allow for these drives.

I tried getting an IDE extension cable (male - female cable) and a power cable extension for these drives, but was unable to get them to work. I will have to use the old fashioned way to get at these drives.

In general I am happy with this item.

Works great for SATA drives, as far as IDE drives it will not read any drives above 80 GB, so pretty much it does not meet the description on the AMAZON WEB site. The docking is very dificult for the IDE drives, the power and IDE slots on the dock are not aligned with the sockets on the drive. Bought it to utilize my old 120 to 320 GB drives, will not read no matter the manufacturer, the software instructions are vary difficult to interpret, takes a while to get the right SW installed.

This started off well, and worked perfectly for both IDE and SATA drives... But 2 months in, after relatively light use... It's completely crapped out on being able to read IDE drives, it'll read a SATA when it feels like it, and the card slots are pretty much useless.

In all, I own both the Startech one, and this one. I purchased this one to compliment the Startech and give me the ability to dock IDE. But now I'm going to scrap this one, get a second Startech one, and just buy the adapter that they now have out for there docks for IDE drives.

I guess that's what I get for buying the unknown... Unknown performance, and no reliability.

Plug and play. Comes with drivers, not sure what they are for, in my case drive got recognized immediately. Has on/off button on the back - very convenient, memory card slots - also useful feature. The only small (very small) disadvantage - you will need to buy an universal outlet power adapter, because this device was made in Ireland. So add $10 or $20 to the cost of the device itself if you want it. Looks very professional and if you do computer repair on the go - looks very impressive for the customers. Like it.

The device works very well and is convenient to leave on the desk top ready for a drive to be inserted. I have numerous only IDE drives and need to be able to get to old backup files. The Seagate drives I have worked perfectly, while the one Maxtor drive didn't work at all. The Maxtor drive has a wider jumper pin bay between the power plug and the data cable. So it would not insert into the device. Fortunately I mainly have Seagate drives so that is not a big issue. I don't have any SATA drives lying around to try it on so I have no idea how good that is. It is so convenient being able to insert a drive and go, that I have decided to use it to do my system backups to harddrives instead of to tape. Some reviews say that have had problems getting the system to recognize the drive after inserting. This has not been a problem for me. It behaves much the same way as a thumb drive does. The only difference I have really notices is in the drive letter selection. Unlike a thumb drive the hard drive apparently gets a higher priority in the drive letter selection. So when it is inserted any thumb drive you have inserted into the same device will get shuffled downward and its letter will be given to the new harddrive. The Eject option is also not available, like it is for other external media. But the drive can still be disconnected in the USB taskbar tool just like any other drive, so there is no risk in losing data with incomplete data writes.
I recommend this device. I have Windows 7 running on a bottom-end server class system.

Avoid this Docking Station. Spend a little more money and just get the cable set up.
I knew that this reaeder would be iffy when I bought it. I was apprehensive but gave it a chance. It refused to power up, so I had to jiggle all of the connectors. Once it powered up, it refused to read then powered down. There are no directions, the software is sketchy, the cords are short and I have a feeling it may have formatted the drive it refused to read and then powered down with. Save your time, Save your Data buy something else.

worked great while it lasted. the usb connector broke so I couldn't plug it into my computer. haven't tried taking it apart to see if I can rig/fix it to work. I can hear the usb plug piece inside shaking around inside of it.

Does excatly as described. Used to to recover multiple hard drives. Much easier than some other tools and just sits on the desk ready for use. On off switch is a nice feature to have as well. Front of the unit has a multi card reader for just ab out every type of memory card which was an added bonus.
