The Retro Entertainment System, or RES, does a decent job of playing NES games. The only real setback is the cleanliness of the cartridges themselves. Be sure to clean your old games THOROUGHLY with a Q-Tip before using them with the RES. If you insert games with grime and dust on the contacts, it can enter the RES itself and cause problems for other games. (see below)

The main goal of the RES itself is to play your old NES games presumably BETTER than on the original system.
This is true for several reasons:
-The system is brand new with no wear and tear from years of use.
-It loads all games from the top, not the front, eliminating the problem of the game not making contact to the system properly.
-The video-out problem with scan lines appearing on the old system are not present on the RES.
-The system itself is much smaller than the original NES and considerably lighter. It's roughly 5" x 1.5" x 5" at around 0.5 LBS (An NES cartridge is slightly longer than the actual system).

The first game I tried (Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt) worked immediately with no problem. However, when I started trying some dustier games, they required some additional cleaning before working.

Like said before, if your games are too dirty, they can dirty up the RES as well. The same Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt cartridge I used at first stopped working later on after playing numerous other titles, and required some fidgeting.

But don't be alarmed with games just not starting up, some deep cleaning of the cartridge contacts (even with heavy chemicals, going against Nintendo's wishes, if it is giving serious problems) may be necessary.
Always remember, the original NES had it way worse and it was both the console and the cartridge at fault.

Worked as intended, right of the box. Popped in Mike Tyson's Punch Out and started wooping up on Glass Jaw Joe in minutes.

Love this little game system, playing your old NES games on a modern HD TV is a trip! Do treat it gently however, it does seem a bit fragile, I had hoped it would be made of heavier materials. I"m afraid if it were to fall from the shelf to the floor once, it would be broken. The game cartridges fit in it snugly and work without aggravation, you have to tug a bit to get them to release, that is how well they fit into the system. And it's tiny size is great for small spaces. I keep mine stored in it;s original box when not in use, to help keep it clean, and protected from bumps or falls.

I was a little worried about the price but this little thing is compact and does exactly what it's intended to do...plays NES games. I don't have a huge library but it plays the ones I have and the kids love the retro games!

Good so far! Sometimes a little buggy at first start, but doesn't happen that often. Excellent purchase, especially for the price.

I bought this item at a local media store and for the most part it is everything it was advertised to be. It has played nearly all of my old Nintendo games even some that I thought would not play but, there are a few small issues and here are a few tips for best results

Clean your cartridges. A little bit of alcohol and a little bit of elbow grease, let dry for a good while and then insert them into the system. This will protect the contacts inside the new system from all of the build up of dirt and grime from years of storage

It was suggested by several people who own this little thing that, when removing the cartridges from the system you should pull them up gently by the corners. It is said that the contacts can be pulled loose over time through repeated forceful removal of cartridges

Try to find, and I believe they are cheap, and original Nintendo entertainment system controller. The ones that are in the box work and you can play them but sometimes the buttons feel a bit squishy

Don't jar the system around while playing you can see on the screen that the game becomes shaky if you move the system around while you were playing and you can cause your game to lock up.

Otherwise, every game that I tried with the exception of a couple that were just plain messed up, worked just fine. I did notice in a side-by-side comparison then I thought that the sound annulation was very minor league different from the original Nintendo but when playing the system standalone, I think that one can hardly tell the difference. The graphics seem to be exactly as they were including colors. Overall this was a great retro experience and for the price I highly recommend it

Whether you're original NES has blinking problems or you just enjoy collecting game systems, the Retro might be for you. It's a cool little system to have. It's very small and compact and it comes in 3 color schemes. I bought two of these, the red/white and the black/silver.

As you've probably read in other reviews, the system has some sound issues. But it depends on what game you're playing. I played Mega man 2 and Life Force without too many problems, though the sound is just slightly distorted as if the volume was turned way up. Turning down the volume seems to help. Some games sound horrible, though. I put in Shingen The Ruler and the music that plays during the title screen was so off key. For $19 bucks, it's a bargain. Even with the sound being a little off in some games, which I get over pretty quickly. I haven't been spoiled by 1080p, True HD 7.1 Dolby Digital, anti-aliasing or high frame rate. If you're itching to play some 8-bit games and you don't want to pay $50 for a 25 year old used system that might not work properly, then go with the NES Retro Entertainment System.
