My roommate loaned me this book because I was trying do do some UI automation where I work. This book had just what I needed and I had my automation running in 1 day when I was trying to get it to work for nearly a month before the book. If you want to know how to write reflection UI automation this book will help you a lot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacking luster
I have been in web development and testing for many years. This is possibly the worst reference book I have every purchased. Dear Author, I will gladly return this book if you will give my money back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Techniques You Can Use Immediately, May 17, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: .NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
First a disclaimer: I am the author of this book. This book puts together in one place all the practical techniques you need to write test automation in a .NET programming environment. The book covers Windows Application testing, ASP.NET Web Application Testing, Unit Testing, UI Testing, and SQL and XML related testing. This book is a practical guide to test automation, but also covers basic principles of testing, such as the difference between validation and verification. This book does not cover the theory of testing, such as research you would need for a graduate school class in computer science. So, if you want a book that shows you exactly how and why to write test automation, you should give this book consideration, but if you are looking for testing theory, this book is probably not for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on Techniques, Light on Theory, May 17, 2006
This review is from: .NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
Overall, I like this book. It showed me exactly how to write Web testing, which is exactly what I was looking for. And it has other kinds of testing that I didn't think about before like XML testing. If you ever do web testing then I think you will like this book. I especially like the way to do UI web testing using Javascript. On the downside the permutations stuff was way over my head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and Practical, April 7, 2009

This review is from: .NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
The five star reviews for this masterpiece are for real, and well deserved. Too bad there aren't more stars. There is no fluff or wasted words here - only meat and potatoes for the practicing test professional involved with test automation. It is compact, yet dense. Even beginners will get a lot out of this well thought out book, although pros of course will get much more. You will not be disappointed. It's like sitting in a design/code review with a master test professional one-on-one. Learn!

This elegant book is written concisely in very clear, precise language. It very capably fleshes out test automation theory with valuable, immediately usable, and eminently practical advice and lightweight code solutions that will get you going quickly, and will help you get your own automation code up and running much faster. At the very least you'll get a lot of practical ideas you can further develop into fully functional customized solutions for your testing problems - even if you're not working in a Windows environment. Excellent coverage is provided for essential automated testing of Windows apps, web apps including Web services, and database apps.

The material, which is laid out in problem-solution format for easy reference, is very carefully selected to discuss essential issues that are faced routinely in test automation. There are also valuable chapters on test harness design patterns, test-related XML, and combinations and permutations (don't see that too often on this essential subject) that will help you generate better test cases and data.

Great books are those that are authoritative, stimulate thinking, exhibit mastery of subject matter, clearly communicate that mastery to the reader, and invite multiple readings which teach the reader new and valuable things each time. This technical book unquestionably falls into that category. What are you waiting for? Do yourself a service and buy the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding .NET Testing Book, April 19, 2007
By
This review is from: .NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
'.NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach' by Dr. James McCaffrey is one of the finest books that Apress publishes. Employing a great writing style, great topic to write about, brevity (less then 400 pages), and well balanced chapter breakups of material (12), I found this book to be highly enjoyable and a must buy for anyone that is looking to add efficient testing into their software environment!

If you are in QA or develop tests where you work, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this book for your .NET testing work. This is an outstanding book that teaches, references and explains a topic that is well worth the time!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, June 2, 2006

I've been a student for many years and have been disappointed with the abundance of theoretically-enriched, academic books that lack practical applications. This book is exactly what I've been looking for. I can actually apply the techniques presented in this book directly to my current position.

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem: you need to automate some tests now... Solution: buy this book, August 19, 2009
By
This review is from: .NET Test Automation Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
I bought this book when taking a Low-Level UI Automation testing class... I've used pretty much every other chapter in this book since then. I like the Problem - Design - Solution delivery followed up by the comments. I especially like that the comments get right to the point of how and why the solutions work. Anyone with .NET framework experience that needs shortcuts to automating tests for Web or Windows UI, Web Services, SQL Stored Procedures, ADO and XML will find this book indispensible. The chapter on Combinations and Permutations is a great help when generating test cases.

This is by far the best book on software testing automation that I found. There are some very good books about software testing principals out there but here is the first book that shows in really simple terms exactly how to write the testing code. Highly recomended.

What struck me is the amount of copious code that permeates this book. And it is not easy code to write/read. Very well thought of, even it if it doesn't suit someone's specific need, it sure does hint to a myriad of other possible avenues.
