    Internal Hard Disk Recommendations

It is possible to use different size drives in the 351UNE, or to use matched sets. SATA hard disks are required in the NETDISK 351UNE. In keeping our commitment to reduce energy consumption, IOCELL Network highly recommends Green Style, low power drives that are specifically manufactured for external storage applications. Check your drive specifications to ensure the start up current will operate within the amperage limit of the power supply.

    SATA I, II or III?

Although SATA II & III drives are working in the 351UNE, the Gigabit LAN interface presents a theoretical speed limit around 128MB/s so there is no significant benefit in using the higher speed drives.

    Hard Disk Cache

We recommend using drives with the same internal cache size for optimum performance.

The Iocell NetDisk 351UNE is a poor product. The name makes everyone believe this device is a "Network Attached storage" device (commonly called a NAS device). This is NOT a NAS device. This device is a 'NDAS' device.

A NDAS device is a made-up word by Iocell/Ximeta to mean their version of a networked storage device. With the Netdisk 351UNE - Using NDAS- the storage device requires every computer to install the 'Netdisk' install utility.

Once done only ONE computer with THEIR software installed write to the drive. The rest can only READ from the drive. With newer versions of their software multiple people may have permissions (beta version). With the upgraded beta versions of the software- the 'host' computer (first computer to have write access while installed) must ALWAYS-BE-ON for other drives to access the data and write to the drive. The included software that ships with the drive only allows for ONE computer to write and is only compatible with Win98/2000/2003 Server for network access. Vista drivers included are only for e-sata/usb.

The Netdisk 351UNE does not support ftp/bit torrent servers/ ect as there is no IP address assigned to the networked drive ever. There is no configuration web page available and no drive statistics to view. To 'mount' and 'unmount' the drive you click on the drive icon available in the task-bar at all times.

    Summary:
Do not buy this expecting a NAS device (A drive enclosure that you could simply turn on and have a drive available on the network to save files to retrieve files). The NetDisk 351UNE is not a NAS device. The NetDisk 351UNE is a network gimmick for a poor-mans networked hard-drive at a comparable price.

I am using the 351UNE for a few weeks now. I leave the 351UNE on 24/7 and it consumes very little power. I checked it with a power meter and it uses less than 20W. The following are my quick note and review:

    * I installed a 1TB Samsung 5400RPM Hard drive in the 351UNE. I expect the 5400RPM Hard drive to run cooler and last longer and its price is very reasonable.
    * My 351UNE connected directly into a 8-ports Gb D-Link switch, I do have an old router as part of my network also connected into the Gb D-Link switch. When installing the 351UNE, I do not have to go into the router to change any setting.
    * I have 4 PCs on my network; three with Vista 64 and one with Vista 32. Two of my PCs connect to a separate Gb switch and the two switches are connected together.
    * When I first install the 351UNE using the driver came in the box, it did not work well. Only one of the 4 PCs can have Read/Write access to the 351UNE at a time; the other three can only have Read access. But after downloaded and installed the new driver [...], all four of my PCs can now have Read/Write access. Now all 4 PCs see the 351UNE as its own internal logical drive. For my small network, this is what I wanted.
    * I might spend more time to test the system in the future, but for now at first glance the data transfer in and out of the 351UNE used up to about 30% of the Gb network band width which is ok for me.

My 351UNE has worked well 24/7 in the last few weeks. It satisfies my need and I am happy with it. If it fails, you will certainly see my update!

It's very true that PC's (including MAC's) have given us all for than our fair share of trouble - look at the size of the IT industry for proof of that. But NDAS is one technology that really shines. As I've read other reviews, I can only say that I've never had any of the problems that have been mentioned. Sorry, but the fact is that most computer problems are user problems. So if I've I've "cheated" somehow to have such good performance, here's how it works.

    1. Regardless of the computer nowadays (PC, Mac, or mainframe), all devices connect via driver software. If the operating system already has a copy of the driver, you don't need to supply your own copy. NDAS drivers are not included in any O/S, so you must expect to have to install drivers on each computer using NDAS.

    2. Early NDAS drivers did not allow either PC's or Macs to have multiple write access. Newer Windows drivers support multiple PC's all mounting with read/write access. Mac drivers don't support this feature, but Macs can run Windows drivers under Windows.

    3. I haven't seen an Ethernet hub at Fry's in years. Switches are faster and cheaper than hubs ever were. So forget using a hub, get a switch instead. NOTE: "hub" is a networking device, not to be confused with things like "media hubs". Similar name, different animal.

    4. Visit Ximeta's web site every couple of months, checking for new drivers.

    5. I've got old network stuff. Two 8 port Linksys (EZXS88W) switches for wired Ethernet, one WRT54GS wireless router, five networked printers, eight to ten PC's running XP, Vista, and 7, and 7 NDAS drives. Six of the NDAS drives have been in 24/7 operation for the last three years.

I was surprised to see some of the ratings on this. I bought two NetDisk years ago when it was just on the market. I have had very few problems. If my network is having issues then yes, it had issues, I don't blame the netdisk.
These drives are the best network add-on anybody can make. I if I had to complain, one of my older units from years ago, vibrates and hums compared to the one next to it, and has from day one, yet it had no problems, it also is mounted by the router in another room so I don't hear it..lol.
I feel a elementary student could easily conect these up. I consider myself not very tech friendly on networking and sometimes call a family member over who networks school pc systems for a living, no so with these puppies. I am sold and hope they never stop making these units. FYI, I have two that are 250GB and my new one I just added is 1TB, I am considering a fourth to run in raid for backup.
