I spent hours on the phone with Netgear technical support.

Maybe not quite as easy as a Linksys, but pretty easy once you know where things are at.

Don't purchase if you have Verizon DSL, they could not activate the modem.

Ok, first read a few of these reviews, you'll learn a lot. But here's what I went through, being a Linksys fan, I reluctantly switched by the lure of AC speeds with a built in ADSL2+ modem. My old phone cable only had the inner 2 wires only, Linksys provides a phone cable with all 4 wires as they use the outer 2 as I found out in some other review. Luckily my outside phone line box was wired correctly and I quickly switched to the provided cable with the 4 lines. Hmmm, still not synching. So I one by one change almost ever setting that I wrote down from the Linksys, and still no connection. Then as a last resort, I switched from PPOE, to PPOA. Synched right up. Very unclear setup instructions. Of course their wizard didn't detect anything wrong, just says call tech support lol. So with that fixed, I eagerly installed all my AC adapters and got all the mac addresses to allow into my network and set everything up, disabling all the guest accounts, they provide 6 for what reason I don't know. But then I see I connected at 300kbps download lol. On the Linksys I was connecting anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5Mbps. All my AC adapters were screaming at 700-800Mbps and my DSL was now the bottleneck. So I check, and the Netgear settings only provide MTU settings of 1458 I think, and on the Linksys it was set to 1492 and on dslreports they recommended 1492. Not sure if this is causing my slowness, but now my whole network is screaming fast, yet very slow. I can see web pages render picture by picture it's so slow now. I gave a 3 because I think they're on the right track, but somehow someone forgot that speed was important and that it should hook up to different connections at the highest speed.Read more ›

I have Windstream DSL and have been having trouble staying connected with the modem they supplied. I have also started to have some issues with my old Netgear router [WNDR3300] as it was lacking in range. Most everything in the house has been converted to Apple products, and the traffic is getting pretty heavy. 5 I phones, 1 I pad, Mac Book Pro, I Mac 27". Apple TV, HP 8500 premium printer and 2 windows lap tops. So we are pretty heavy users at different times of the day. My windstream modem a speedstreem 4200 had to be reset a couple time a day, and after contacting Windstream to no avail, I decided to replace the modem. After finding the Netgear D6200 Modem Router combo on CNET with a good review, I decided that I would give it a try. I am by no means a computer guru, but I know enough to get by. I have had it up and running for a week now, and I have not had any issues with the system. No resets or failure to connect to the network. The setup was very simple and I renamed my network to match the old setup, it took me about 30 minutes including a firmware update. The coverage has increased in the home, as I had some dead spots with the old router. I do not have any products that are above the N range at this time so I have no info on the new AC wifi, but it's there when I do.

Over all I have been very happy with the results I have been seeing. Nothing worse than having to get up and reset the system every few hours, it's much like every time you go to turn the lighs on having to go to the circuit box the flip the braker. All in all I would recommend the D6200 at this time.

UPDATE 6/13
Just to let everyone know, I have had the router up and running for 3 months now and last week I lost service no internet connection. Not bad considering what I had been going thru with my old system, did a reset and still no internet, contacted ISP and they had an outage in the area. So I really have been up and running for 3 months without a drop in service.

As far as combo-boxes go, this is a winner. Netgear had some earlier hiccups with this (the V1... you'll see some of those reviews mixed in with the reviews for this V2) but the V2, which I purchased, is a winner.

Everything my telco/ISP (who Netgear does warn about in their supplied setup booklet) said I couldn't do on my own in order to get me to buy their cheap, overpriced, less functional, less secure, box, the D6200 does with room to spare. I only wanted two SSID's (2.4Ghz & 5 Ghz) but got total of 4 in the form of the main SSID and a guest SSID for each band. I have full control of the visibility, whether it's enabled, and if wifi traffic is isolated from my local network (the wired ports) for each SSID. It has an external WAN port so you can switch between DSL or Router mode at will. I can't test that because I don't have cable. However, if I do upgrade to bonded-DSL (aka Vbond) and go to 24 Mbps, I will be using it. This may be Netgear's intention: Have Vbond running in an external modem with a failover mode by simply moving the RJ-11 phone plug.

From unboxing it to having it up and running took me about 10 minutes. I then checked for the latest firmware, found there was an update and updated it. Piece of cake to do. After another 20 minutes I had it completely configured to serve my whole home (my media server, tv's, laptops, tablets and phones). Yeah, it does all that and gives you the ability to specify QoS for each type or host or by program/application name (specific ports). You can create your own 'services / applications' as you see fit.

There are only two things I wish it would do that my Thomson can do. 1) Have multiple 'subnet' interface addresses for true subnet support (like the router it should be).
