Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Netgear R6250 Smart WiFi Router is advertised as a wireless router that will give wireless coverage to larger homes/areas (couldn't find any information on what the coverage area was for this router) and it will handle 10 or more connected WiFi devices. At the bottom of this review I have listed the product specs from the Netgear website as of the date of this review they are not listed in the product description of this product's page.

Device Aesthetics:
This router is small, with a non-nondetachable stand with a glossy finish. The router sits upright and doesn't have any wall mounting brackets. There are not a bunch of blinking lights, just four small image lights at the bottom in the front of the router, indicating whether the power, wireless, usb and internet is on, along with a lit Netgear logo in the center front. If needed, it would be easy to cover the image lights with tape. The WiFi on/off button and WPS button are located on the side, making them easy to reach. The USB, 4 lan ports, internet port, reset button, power button and ac power connector are located in the back at the bottom.

Setup:
Setting up the R6250 was very similar to setting up other Netgear routers. I was previously using a WNDR3800 and found the interface along with the setup near identical. I upgraded the firmware as soon as I connected to the R6250 before I customized it, to firmware version V1.0.0.70_1.0.70 with no problems. The documentation recommends that you keep the SSID that is factory assigned to this router but I always change mine and had no problem with doing so.

Wireless Speed:
As for wireless speed, I found the R6250 to be comparable to the WNDR3800.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I counted all of the wired and wireless connections I have in my house and was surprised:

2 desktop pc's hardwired
1 Windows laptop wireless
1 iPhone
1 iPad
2 Droid phones
1 Nexus
1 BD player
1 Smart TV
1 Onkyo AVR
1 Wii
1 Xbox
1 wireless security system

Not all of those devices are putting demands on the router at one time that's still a lot of connections and I can only imagine that it will increase in the future (iToaster?).

Installation of this router was quick and easy. I gave it the same name and passcode as the router it replaced so the devices above wouldn't know that I did a switcharoo - that worked, they were all clueless.

Following the installation I hooked up a Canon printer to the router. I downloaded the print drivers to the PC's and the notebook and they all now share that printer. Netgear's documuntation says that I can make my printer work with the iPad and the iPhone but it's not clear how to do that. I'll update this review and share my experience once I figure it out.

I haven't had any problems with this router. The signal is strong throughout my home; I have a rather large ranch style home and the router is at one end - I have no signal problems at the far end of the house.

I've been happy with my Dlink DIR-655 router for a long time, but recently it has begun dropping connections. I wasn't sure if it was because there are so many (over 12) 2.4Ghz wifi signals that overlap on my house now or if it was just getting old, but I decided it was time to upgrade. I selected the AC1600 (R6250) while shopping at Walmart, since the price matched Amazon. I've switched routers before, so I decided to ignore the R6250 instructions about having to turn off my Motorola SURFboard SB6141 and just connected the R6250. Turns out they were right. That didn't work. I was forced to power cycle the SB6141.

Lesson 1: follow the instructions and power cycle your cable modem.

After that the internet connection came up fine. I switched the default IP to match my old LAN and everything seemed to connect and start working fine initially. After a while, I began to get get intermittent warnings about duplicate IPs from my windows laptop. I began watching the attached devices and it appeared that there was something really wrong with the DHCP server. Duplicate IPs were being given out to same MAC Id. I pulled my thinning hair out for a day or so on this. I tried assigning MAC IDs to IPs but that didn't help. New IP and duplicate IPs kept being given out. Finally I gave up and decided to switch everything over to static IPs. In the process of doing that, I discovered that the issue seemed to be between the R6250 and my Diamond WR300N Wireless Repeater which I was using in wireless bridge mode. Unplugging the WR300N and instead running an Ethernet cable cleaned up most of my DHCP issues, right away. However, the Satellite STB which I had on the wireless bridge still has two IPs with the same MAC ID in the Attached Devices list.

i like the router, its solid, hasn't dropped a connection yet, i haven't tested the range of the wifi, but i don't need to go too far from the house, 50feet at most and only in summer. anyway my only gripe is with the slow speed of the usb port.

also i would like to have 2 usb ports.

so the speed problem: i reset the router to defaults then flashed with the firmware from [...]

it was the same version from the factory but did it anyway figuring it couldn't hurt.

The usb 3.0 transfer speeds are the same as before:

The hardware used for the test was:

R6250 + vertex 4 + Nexstar HX usb 3.0

while on my laptop's usb 3 port this caddy+ssd can do 185MB/s read and 119MB/s write.
on the router: 34MB/s read 21MB/s write

i double checked with a Kingston DTU G3 32GB
it got 33MB/s read and 18MB/s write on the router, but on my laptop that usb flashdrive goes upto 150MB/s read and 80Mb/s write.

Tested with crystaldiskmark, 2x100Mb size test.

Somebody in engineering or marketing lied, this is not a usb 3 port it only functions like a usb 2 port.

i contacted netgear and the tech support was somewhat helpful, they only said to reflash the unit, then when i sent in this report they said to ask for a refund or exchange.

weirdly enough i can't seem to find any reviews on google that tested usb speeds. you'd think usb 3.0 being the super speed it is, somebody would've tested it by now, its been a month since the product was launched.
