Fast, reliable, and noisy,
This review is from: NETGEAR JGS524NA Unmag Giga 24Pt Switch (Electronics)
This switch is solidly built and hasn't had any problems in the year or so it's been installed. Gigabit is a huge improvement over 100Mbit, and with this 24 port switch I was able to put enough network drops in each room that I didn't need desktop switches. The auto-uplink feature means you don't need to worry about crossover cables, or which port you've plugged your router in to. And since it's automatic, there's no button on the front of the switch that takes down the network.
The lack of a wall wart is nice. This switch has an internal power supply, and uses a standard IEC 320 connector (the same connector that's on most computer's power supplies). However, it does have two relatively noisy fans. These run all the time, and make more sound than your average desktop machine. If you want to replace them, you'll need two 5V 40x10mm fans and a philips head screwdriver. I replaced the fans in mine and have not had any trouble with overheating before or since, but I am not currently using all the ports on this switch.

Works well, but the fan is loud,

So far I've had a good experience with the operation of this unit, but a warning that it has a fairly loud fan. Good, because it keeps the thing nice and cool, but bad if you're planning on putting it on a desk or in a quiet location like a home office. I've got three computers and various devices around me, and the switch is the loudest thing in the office.

Very LOUD fan,

This network switch works great but the fan is very loud. I have it installed in a media panel in a wall. I can hear the fan running in the room on the other side of the wall. I wish there was a way to slow down the fan speed when optimal cooling isn't required. I would not buy another one of these just because of the fan noise. Good luck on your puchase.

After reading several reviews on this unit, we purchased it. The majority of our equipment supported gigabit and so we decided it was time to "get in the game". It took less then 15 minutes to install in our rack and change over to it. All I can say is "wow"! The performance is phenomenal. We have had no issue with it since switching over and it just plain works. I cannot believe that we can obtain that level of speed in network applications for the price we paid. Highly recommended.

Good performance switch with Jumbo frame support and low hassle install. Moved up to Gigabit after my ancient FS108 switch died. More computers, more drops in the house, and Gigabit standard on our macs & music server made this a good choice.
I have yet to do hard-core performance tests, but will add/update this review when I do, so 4 stars for now.

Went from a 16 port gigabit switch to the JGS524 without any problems. We had all the ports on the 16 port version (desktop non-rackmount version) used at full speed (gb) and it was HOT! You prob could use it as a hand warmer on those cold days. Alas with the 24 port switch it had a fan which cooled it down considerably. The fan is loud but we had this unit sitting next to our office server which was 10x louder so we didn't even notice it.
Installation was a breeze, just unplug all the CAT6 cables from the old unit, remove the old switch, mount the new one and plug all the cables back in.

I purchased this two years back, since then it has gone bad multiple times. First thing that goes bad is the fan. It becomes noisy. Then it becomes intermittent. Netgear will replace it with a rebuilt one (after you pay for S&H), which also goes bad. It has a two year warranty, as soon as the two years are up, Netgear support says sorry, you have to buy a new one. Can't say that I received a bad piece because multiple copies had similar problems. Not reliable.

This is a great little switch. Great price, no setup to speak of, and I consistently get AWESOME throughput on it. I use this switch to do mode 0 ethernet channel bonding on a small three node cluster of Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers in my office. I regularly see right at 98-100MB/second throughput per two-NIC bond, which is really great speed.I love Netgear, and I've had fantastic results from them over the years. I recommend this switch if you need low budget high performance. |
