I just got the WNDA4100 yesterday and here are my first impressions. First, I am using the WNDR4500 Netgear router. I have been using it for about 3 months and have been very happy with the router. It has been very reliable since the last firmware update (v1.0.1.6). My router and PC are on opposite corners of the house, about 60ft and 8 walls. I know 5GHz does not do well penetrating walls but I wanted to see what it could do. My laptop with 802.11n and a single antenna at the same distance gets 72Mbps, the max it can get with 1 antenna. My desktop PC (Dell Inspiron 531/Windows 7) has a 802.11g PCI card adapter and gets 54Mbps. I wanted to upgrade since I have been working on some large video files that take 15mins or more to backup. I also wanted to try out 802.11a (5GHz). With 3 antennas in the adapter 2.4GHz max is 216Mbps and 5GHz max is 450Mbps. The WNDA4100 is a large USB adapter. It won't fit in my PC directly so I had to use the connector cable. Using the cable is a good idea since I could easily hit the adapter if it was plugged in upfront. I installed the software from CD and everything installed correctly. The router has an SSID for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz. I disconnected from the 2.4GHz SSID and connected to the 5GHz SSID. I was not getting the expected performance. I was getting 54Mbps. I started inSSIDer to see what was going on. I rebooted and it did not fix it. I was finally able to connect at 162Mbps. I think inSSIDer was causing problems with the connection. I was only getting 3 bars (-80db) with 5GHz so that explained the 162Mbps and proved my concern about 5GHz penetrating walls. I then disconnected at 5GHz and connected at 2.4GHz. I got 4 bars (-60db) and connected at 216Mbps, the max. I then tried to ftp a 1G file to my NAS server.Read more ›

Not sure where these negative reviews are coming from. I might humbly suggest that some of these people check their router. A wireless adapter is ONLY as good as the router or other wifi it is trying to connect to. AND, your poor router has to broadcast through anything between it and its receiver. If you have a pile of books on top of it or something, expect crappy reception. The same, if your router is in the basement and your computer is three floors up with stone or sheet metal between the two. That being said, this is about as powerful as it gets with standard hardware when trying to connect to wireless....at least on the reception end. It is, in essence, a very high quality antenna. If it's not working, the problem is probably, your network broadcast is of unreasonably crappy quality or you are asking too much of standard wireless (like trying to broadcast to the house next door on your laptop....we've all done it).

Bottom line....installation was plug and play. I plug it in, 30 seconds later, the operating system has installed drivers for it. If you want, you can use the included installation disk. But that isn't necessary. Or maybe it is....I still used XP (gasp....infidel).

Who needs this product. Two people. The guy who is trying to connect to his wireless just a little farther than is wise to and can't quite make it happen without a really good antenna. And the guy with a really good router who is pissed off because the wireless card in his laptop is just not good enough to make full use of his connection. The issue is there are cheaper adapters and most of them work just as good as this one because your router/wireless is crappy. Better router before better adapter.

I bought this one from BestBuy because i needed it urgent.

I have to say this network adapter is absolutely terrible and it will make me reconsider all of the other products from NetGear in the future.

It will constantly drop connections. it will also randomly increase the latency.

I started noticing LAG during my online game play on random intervals. It would fluctuate between 50ms and 1500ms. . After that, i run traceroute and ping on the command shell to figure out what was causing the problem. It turns out that the problem happened on the first hop (between this NetGear and the router). A more careful investigation revealed that it was this unit causing the problem.

I tried two other adapters from other brands and they all worked fine. Now i am stuck with a unit which does not work well..

If you are using Windows 8.1, the 5GHZ band will NOT be operational using the Netgear driver 1.2.0.10 (their latest driver as of the date of this review). The 2.4GHZ band will work fine.

The first one was returned for replacement because it kept dropping. I've now been using the second one for about a week. The 5g band has a transmission rate much lower that expected. It's typically around 108, but sometimes drops into the 80's. Sensitivity is also not what I'd normally expect. I can get around 140 on the 2.4 band. I have a range extender and the distance from the extender to this PC is around 20 feet through one wall. I'm really considering sending this back and getting a Linksys AE3000. The primary reason I chose the Netgear was because I assumed better results since the router and extender are both Netgear.

4/11/13-Started getting irregular speed and blue screens of death, so I'm returning the second adapter. Will try the Linksys AE3000.

4/28/13-Thus far, the Linksys AE3000 has proved to be far superior.

The manufacturer commented on this review(What's this?)

Hi Carl,

We'd like to work with you to find out what may be causing the speed problems you are having, and we have a few questions to start off the process:

- What is the make and model of your NETGEAR router and the range extender?
- Can you confirm whether the WNDA4100 is connecting to the router directly, or to the extender? In some situations, depending on the extender, it may only get a 150 Mbps link rate maximum.
- The 5GHz band will have less wireless interference and congestion, but on the flipside, will offer poor penetration ability -- the wall may be affecting the transmission rate. Can you try moving the adapter closer to the extender, or alternately trying the 2.4 GHz band?
- Have you tried using the cradle that came in the box to adjust the extender to optimize its position for the best signal? This may help out also.

If all else fails, please get in touch with us at amazon@netgear.com; please provide a link to this review if you can. We'll be happy to help!

Regards,

NETGEAR Team
