I received this product through Amazon's vine program, which means that I received it for free in exchange for writing this review.

This item is a pair of powerline ethernet adapters. It plugs into a wall outlet and has an ethernet jack. It allows you to connect any two ethernet devices using the electrical wires, instead of ethernet cables. The data is then sent over the powerlines that run through your walls.

So, for example, I use it to connect my network printer, which I keep in my garage, with the rest of my computer network. I don't have an ethernet network jack in the garage, and so I plugged this box into a regular outlet and then plugged the printer into the ethernet jack on the box. I then plugged the second box into a jack in my house and plugged that into my network. Voila! Now, my printer is on my network.

Although the kit includes two units, you can purchase additional units and add them to the network later.

There are range limits. The further each unit is from the other, the slower the data will be transmitted. And if you're too far, you won't get data transmission at all. Netgear has a program you can download from their web-site (called the Powerline Utility) that you can run on a Windows computer and that will show you all the units that are connected to the "main" unit (the one that is connected to the computer you are running the software on) and their data transmission speed.

There are a number of companies that make these devices, and almost all of them (including these) use the HomePlugAV specification for sending data over powerlines. Any unit that is HomePlugAV compliant can talk to any other HomePlugAV compliant device, and so this one will work with similar products made by Zyxel, Netgear, and Linksys, etc.

I had a set of these things from NetGear years back. They were big, clunky, and got extremely hot to the touch. They were also 40% more expensive than these are listed now, though mine ended up being half that buying new off an auction site. Point being, like most tech they've shrunk in both size and cost.

I'll be entirely and completely honest with you. You may not need these. If you have a very simple need like a DVR that just needs to update TV programming, a Blue-ray player that needs occasional updates, or something along those lines, and your home doesn't block the signals too much, you can just get a wireless bridge for maybe 1/3 the price. However, you will most likely need to know relatively technical settings to configure, it may be slower depending the construction of your home, may even dropping signals when a microwave comes on, and if you're someone worried about electromagnetic signals and any kind of adverse affect on health you're pumping out more radio waves into your home. I have a wireless bridge I use as well and it took me half an hour of digging through poorly translated Chinese and playing with settings to get it to work.

That being said, to me the powerline adapters are the gold standard in convenience. You know what the configuration on these is? You plug them in. Yeah, that's it. All you have to do is take an Ethernet cable coming out of your router, plug it into one, stick it in the wall, then repeat the process in reverse out of the other unit in the different outlet. You're immediately set up and good to go. You can know nothing at all about technology and the units just work. To add security to the network, just hold a button on the side of the plugged in adapter (it's the only button on the thing) for 2 seconds.

I've been a Network Engineer for over 10 years and ever since I've dealt with computers, cabling is one of the worst aspects of the job. I can't tell you how many times I've run/extended CAT3/CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6 cabling and ended up terminating both ends and testing them. Some situations are easier than others when you're allowed to run a cable across the floor or above ceiling tile... but in other situations like getting networking in a certain room in your house can be a total pain in the butt.

For the average home user, the only way to get networking from point A to your house to point B is either wired with cabling or use WiFi & bridging if the WiFi didn't extend far enough. When Powerline technology came out it added convenience of existing power cabling but still was a little flaky and troublesome. But since then, Powerline has jumped leaps and bounds since and is much more reliable & faster.

When it came time to buy, I put a lot of research into looking into the latest powerline solution for my home. I wanted something with high performance and the current version of "high performance Powerline devices" allows 500Mbps transfer rate. Even still, I was having trouble selecting which manufacturer to go with (Belkin, Cisco, Netgear, etc). After my homework (and despite Netgear's horrible sales support), I ended up with a Netgear anyway.

The Netgear Powerline AV device I wanted was not on Amazon (Powerline AV+ 500 Nano (which has the extra outlet built-in)). It seemed nobody had it despite being listed on Netgear's website. I spoke with Netgear Sales Support and they said it wasn't discontinued, but on backorder. I'm not sure why but because I was on a time table, I decided to get the other version, the Powerline Nano 500 Set which I'm reviewing.
