I bought one of these on closeout in the middle of December '05. I had read several articles about people having problems with them, but a guy I worked with owned one and loved his. It seemed to me the reviews were either great or terrible. Since most people don't take time to write good things, I figured I was seeing mostly just the complaints.

After over one week of serious internet searching, I finally decided that this was the best bang for the buck. I emailed Neuros and was told they had a 30 day refund policy if I didn't like it or had any problems with it. Nothing else had the capacity (80GB) or the features. I especially liked the idea of the built in FM modulator.

I have used the heck out of mine for about 3 weeks now and have had no problems. My music collection is over 30GB and it handles it with ease. The supplied software is a little slow when trying to manage the ID3 tags with that large of a collection, but I have used other freeware for managing the tags (GearVolt to be specific) and then used the Neuros software to sync the files with the player.

I have emailed tech support a couple of times with questions and they have gotten right back with me. Even many of the customers that have had problems with their players and are angry still rave about the outstanding customer service.

I feel they may have had some quality issues at a point in time and am hoping that the hardware bugs are worked out (fingers crossed - so far, so good).

If you're the type of person who likes to feel they got the most features for the best price, this unit is for you. Also, there is tons of other software/firmware you can download to improve/change the way the unit functions. Neuros uses an "open source" policy, which means they allow access to their software/firmware for customers, so many of the technical people out there have written their own software/firmware for it. There are even sites that tell you how to swap the hard drive out for a larger unit, or modify the antenna so the FM modulator works from over 125 feet away!

The only negative I can say about it is that it's a bit bulky. However, it was smaller than I expected based on the photos. It's been compared to a "brick" but fits in my hand, so it's not that big. It fits in my shirt pocket, although it is a bit heavy while it's in there.

Overall, a great player for the money. I can carry my COMPLETE CD collection with me all the time and still have 40GB of space for file transfers between computers.

What can I say? I would definitely buy one of these again.

I bought this item three months ago and have yet to use it. It has great features and should work excellently, but I've yet to experience anything but headaches. A friend recommended the Neuros and loves his, but mine was defective right out of the box. The manufacturer was back-logged in shipping the item when I first bought it, and when it finally arrived, it would not power-on. I shipped that unit back at Neuros request and eventually received a replacement that worked for less than two hours before freezing and giving an error message. Neuros has had the second replacement for a week and claims that it will take another month before I can get a repaired or replaced unit. A good concept but it looks like they need to refine the unit before it can be reliable. Their customer service was at least decent, but slow and made many mistakes (sent the replacement to the wrong address).

UPDATE: I've now had my working Neuros for 9 months. When everything had been worked out and a good working unit arrived, I couldn't be happier. Neuros gave me an upgraded 40gb unit for my troubles and I haven't had a hiccup with it yet. The Neuros works with perfection. I use it for music on the go, and to record lectures with the internal mic. The mic is not as good as an external unit, but far better than any of my previous recorders. I can easily record hours of lectures, then listen to my favorite tunes on the way home from school. The controls are very easy to operate and user friendly to learn. I LOVE IT!

Its one of the best mp3 players out there, if you can stand its ugliness. It works perfectly first time every time. I have never had 1 problem, and I have 3 of these things. And its so packed with features. You'd be hard pressed to find a more open source, modular, drag-and-drop, simple player anywhere.

The product worked well when it was first received, but after using the MyFI feature the unit refused to turn on. I sent the unit back to the manufacturer, but when I got it back it was still broken and will have to try again. The forums on the neuros site seem to indicate that this is a fairly common problem. This device has many feautures, but is clearly lacking in quality.

Great features on paper...But when you try to use it, you get an error message - Check out the review on the 80 GB unit. Looks like someone else had the same issue. Straight out of the box the unit will not power up properly.
Customer service has been very responsive, but I am on my second replacement unit. I am having no luck with getting an actual working player ( even the guy I talked to in customer service said they were having many problems with this issue and my replacement unit would take a while to come out since they were waiting for a good batch from the factory). I live in a large city also so the FM transmit thing will probably not work well since most station frequencies are taken - Again refer to the review on the 80 GB model. Save your money . I am just glad I didn't shell out what the poor guy who bought the 80 gb unit did.
