Should you toddler have Music Blocks? Yes--if you want to encourage the music/math part of their brain and have a lot of fun in the process. Now, the question is which version to buy?In October 2002, Neurosmith released two new versions of its acclaimed Music blocks toy, but neither made it to stores before the Christmas season. The 2.0 Music Blocks sold here, is a new, less expensive version than the Original Music Blocks. The body is smaller, and there is only one speaker instead of two (Neurosmith says the sound quality is the same). It comes with on-board music, but no cartridges (Original Music Blocks came with a Motzart cartridge). It does have a slot for add-on cartridges if you purchase them separately. Other toy retailers will sell the remainder of their Music Blocks Original, and then start selling Music Blocks Maestro. The Maestro version will be more expensive than the 2.0, have two speakers, and come with a 3-in-1 cartridge that plays three different types of music. Neurosmith is also clearing out the older cartridges and introducing a line of 3-in-1 cartridges. Which is right for you will depend on whether you can find Music Blocks Original on sale, and whether you have other Neurosmith toys that can use the cartridges (Jumbo Music Block and Music Ball). Although the product does not promise to have cartridges, the version I ordered here in January 2003, included 2 bonus cartridges (Mary Poppins and Rhythms of the World). I don't know how long the cartridges will be included, or whether they all include the same cartridges, but it made this a great value!

My 16-month-old received this gift from Santa for Christmas. so far it has been the hit toy. She is able to move the blocks around to make the different musical sounds and is able to start the music herself. So far this toy seems to be withstanding all of her tough play and the music quality is great. Not only does she like it, but Mozart is much easier to listen to the 100th time around than some of the other choices. I also like the fact that the product has a phone number to order replacement parts (just in case she destroys one of the blocks). All in all, a great toy that teaches exactly what it claims to teach while being easy enough for a young child.

Our 2 year old received this for Christmas and he loves it. Actually my husband and I get a kick out of it too. You can also teach colors and shapes just using the blocks. Composing your own music is lots of fun. We've not had any problems with this toy not being durable. I am now shopping for more cartridges...

As a teacher, we have heard over the past few years how classical music helps stimulate the brain. My son recently turned 2 and we bought this for him. Yes occasionally, he likes to stack the blocks, but he loves changing the order of the blocks to make various melodies. The bright colors are great for teaching colors. I will ask him where is the blue block...and so on. Each block also has 6 shapes. In time I am sure he will learn his shapes from this toy as well. He is already calling the circle a "ball" and pointing to the other shapes asking, "That?" To which I will name the shape. Daddy also loves this toy. They will sit together making different sounds and melodies. They also like that they can hear a beat when the put the block in and try to match the melodies together before they play the whole line of blocks. I liked this so much; I ordered 2 more for our 2-year-old and 3-year-old nieces!!

This toy is really cool. The music isn't typical annoying childrens music but don't let your kids lean to hard on the block or the sensors where you place the block will break. Why?? This is a childrens toy-- Shouldn't it hold up to a little pressure.

Well ours worked for about 10 seconds and that was it. Called the number provided BY Neurosmith and it has been disconnected.....sent an email to the customer care line....returned. And there is NO Neurosmith web site either. Thank goodness Amazon is accomadating...or I'd be stuck with a crummy toy.

We have both the older and newer version. While the newer version is okay, we really enjoy the older version because of the music choices. The older version takes the cartridges and you can switch out types of music to some really neat choices, from surf music to world music to mary poppins. The newer version (2007) has 3 music selection, which just wasn't enough for us for long term, but good for getting our two year old started and distracted while our 4 year old played with the older version. We also found the newer model did not have as good sound quality as the older version. Overall, however, the product was fun and educational, and so for, indestructible. (-:

Super fun toy!,

I received this toy as a baby shower gift, and we introduced it to my daughter when she was just 6 months old while she did "tummy time." She really enjoyed listening to the music and watching the lights on the front of the toy, even though she was too young to really use it. As she gets older, I anticipate that she will begin to use it herself and continue to enjoy it.

Love the toy, but company out of business!!!,

We have owned this for two years and love it!!! However, Neuromith stopped making these products (hence, the low, low price) and cartridges. So, if you want a cheap toy, great. But you'll get no support from the company. Unfortunate, because they really did have a wonderful line of toys!

Not like the old model,

We own the old model of this toy and after seven years it has started not working correctly. So I decided to get another one. The new model is chintzy. The sound is computer generated and lacks the clarity and depth that the old model had. The base toy and blocks now have a cheap lightweight plastic feel. This model has three music style settings on the back instead of a place for cartridge, so it is quite limited. For the money, it just isn't worth it. Wish I could find a "new" old model.
