From Publishers Weekly

In the first of the Fear Street series, Corey falls in love with Anna, the new girl at school. The only problem is that he can't tell if she's real--most of his friends have never seen her on campus, and she's not listed in the school's files. When he calls her family's home they are strange and evasive. In desperation, Corey goes to Anna's house --located on infamous Fear Street--and there a man tells Corey that Anna is dead. But a few nights later, Anna calls him and asks him to meet her. Anna's passionate kisses convince Corey that his love object is alive and kicking. The rest of this novel follows the same tedious pattern: each of Corey's torrid encounters with Anna is accompanied by several supposedly eerie incidents. Something strange is going on, but it is unlikely that readers will have the interest or stamina to stay with the mystery until it is resolved. Stine fans will have to hope that the rest of the Fear Street series proves a lot more fearsome than this tame offering. Ages 11-14.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-- A new entry in the "Fear Street" series--that street where unexplained, terrifying events occur for no particular reason, to anyone brave enough to venture down its sidewalks. When Cory Brooks, high school gym star, meets Anna Corwin, the hauntingly beautiful girl who has just moved to Fear Street, he becomes preoccupied with her. With the help of good friends, particularly the girl next door, Cory unravels the puzzle of Anna's mysterious life. The result is a fast - moving tale that includes obsession, strange events , and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. The book moves along from start to finish , conveying an uneasiness that will keep readers going. Cory and his friends are typical teens , and their conversation and action are believable. The sense of something always about to happen and the cliff - hanging endings to the chapters will make this a good booktalking candidate. The vocabulary is simple, the premise interesting , and the plot compelling, making this book one for reluctant readers, as well as a useful addition for teens who like the "creep" genre. --Molly Kinney, North Dade Regional Library, Miami, FL

3.0 out of 5 stars Dying for a kiss, February 13, 2004

Jerms (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
Cory Brooks has a crush on Anna Corwin, the new girl in school. She's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen. But there's something not quite right about Anna. She always seems to be disappearing. She wears old clothes. And the newspaper says she's dead. Cory's friend Lisa Blume thinks that Anna is a ghost. If she's right, Cory might be the next person in Shadyside to be dead.

This is the first Fear Street book ever. I didn't really like it. R.L. Stine definitely improved on the rest of the series. Anyway, some parts of the book were interesting. The prologue really wants to make you read the book. But once you get to the end, you realize that the prologue completely threw you off to the big surprise.

Make sure to look for Cory, Lisa, and Cory's friend David making guest appearances in other Fear Street books. Two of them are 'Missing' and 'Broken Hearts.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Horrific Happenings, November 2, 2003

A Review by Anna

Cory Brooks finds himself madly in love with a girl he hardly knows. She is all that he can think about, he cannot concentrate on anything without thinking of her. Lisa Blume, Corys neighbor and best friend also has an obvious love interest. She is constantly trying to get Corys attention towards her while he is repetitively requiting his love for Anna Corwin, the hauntingly beautiful girl whom he is excessively interested in. It was love at first sight, but was she really what Cory had perceived her to be? Is Lisa still only a friend in Corys mind?

The only thing I did not enjoy in reading this book was putting it down at night. This book kept my heart at a racing speed with its suspenseful twists and turns leading well up to the climax. The beginning was well informative as to what was going on however it kept me lingering with questions about the events that where occurring. Each event tied in with another because all of the people in the story were connected with the conspiracy going on in their very own town. The threats and attempted pursuing of those threats made me smile with shock and sometimes minor disbelief. The ending perfectly answered all of my questions in a quite refreshingly satisfying way. All of the ends were tied with a long explanation that made so much sense it caused me to wonder why I had not thought of it myself.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a story that keeps them on their toes, even those who dont enjoy reading very often. This book is a great read for people who can appreciate a good mystery or a suspenseful thriller. Those people would love this book.
