I'm a recent fan of symphonic metal bands from Europe. I used the Amazon search engine to find these goth metal bands with female vocalists. This item showed up and looking at the cover I had assumed that this would be this type of music and I did recognize 3 groups that were female fronted. I mistakenly assumed that all the rest were also female fronted gothic metal groups, but that wasn't the case. The music is OK if you like screaming male vocalists with no melodies, but I prefer the classical opera style of the women backed by the heavy metal. It was my fault for not checking into this more thoroughly and I was very disappointed.

This second instalment of gothic and goth related video clips from the hard `n' heavy end of the music spectrum from XYX music is a reasonable grab bag of goodies if your into this sort of thing. A cursory perusal of the track listing will probably sell you (or not) and it must be said that with only 19 clips as opposed to the first instalments 32 this drops the ball a bit in quantity and, if truth be told, quality as well. There are only a few `names' here - mainly we're talking Nightwish and Dimmu Borgir though for me the collection was useful as I got to glimpse a bit of what Magica, Eluveitie, Tyr and Unsun were on about, the latter being a bit of a revelation for me.
Elsewhere we get some nice stuff from Xandria and the somewhat mildly unsettling Pet Sematary by Michelle Darkness and after seeing the video clip to Velatum I came away with even more respect for the intelligence and worthiness of Austrian band Serenity. I guess it will come down to your budget. Really, if you want to check a band out these days you can just google them so the real value of video clips as a promotional tool has probably been slightly eroded by the internet. My advice is to get the first DVD of gothic spirits before picking this one up. |
