3.0 out of 5 stars Great Show, Disappointing Video Quality
This DVD is a must for any true Duran Duran fan. BUT ... it is obviously an un-remastered copy of a VHS video recording. You can see those white VHS tracking lines running through the image pretty regularly. Still, the band puts on a great show. And it is a blast to see them in their prime. So I give this a thumbs up. This concert was shown on MTV back in 83 when Duran were at their height of popularity. You could see it if you had recorded then and if you still had a VHS player and the tape lasted 25 years. The concert is awesome to see after all of this time, but it is the extra Top of the Pops that had me really excited. I had not seen these performances before and so it was a real delight, not to mention, as a bonus Duran has "Rio" era videos included. This is not anything of consequence EXCEPT that they included the video for LONELY IN YOUR NIGHTMARE which has only ever been seen on the Duran Duran video album(also only available on VHS). I have no idea when the record company will release a complete videography but this was a pleasant surprise. The packaging was perfect. They included excerts from the 1982 concert booklet with pictures of the band. Overall, perfect packaging, product was superb. I can't fault the recording of the concert. It was over 25 years ago.

Someone is going to mention the lighting or the audio. Those aspects are not perfect. Duran Duran magic will have you hookedstarting at the third song Night Boat and you never even think about lighting or sound. Just the joy of being young and watching this amazing talent, this amazing band reminding you why the 80's was so much fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best and earliest performances of a legendary band, January 22, 2010

A man once said "To hear Duran Duran in concert is synonymous with heaven,". Actually, that was me who said that. Seriously though, this performance is amazing for so many reasons. At this time they only had two albums under their belt and practically every song they wrote and released was flawless. Secondly the guitar work of Andy Taylor is remarkable. Andy knows how to take his usual stuff and amplify it in such a way that it's even more pleasing. It's very rare you find anybody who is capable of taking a motif from their song and amping it up to sound even more kick-ass. Thirdly, there's also some experimentation going on during the concert. They even add in their cover of the song Come up and see me, which is absolutely wonderful. Andy's guitar work again rocks yet it's also so beautiful. It's not just Andy but everyone else too who gives a very powerful, youthful energetic performance. You can feel the energy coming from the crowd in this recording and Duran Duran reciprocates tenfold. Some of the songs sound even better than their studio recordings, like Nightboat, New Religion, Friends of Mine and Planet Earth. I love the guitar work that Andy adds during the chorus of the song. It lends the song a very dark and mysterious tone. The horns on songs like Rio, Planet Earth and Girls on Film are by Andy Hamilton, who has since toured with Duran Duran in the past few years as well. The album recording is excellent. This version is perfect, sounds much cleaner and all the more subtle stuff you never would have heard on an analogue recording sounds a lot better in this digital rendering of this legendary concert. For five young guys from England who were barely appreciated at this point in time they sound way too talented for their age. This live recording is the definitive version of their work just as they were starting to hit it big in the USA.

Duran Duran's 'Live at Hammersmith '82!' is the recently released DVD recording of their famous concert held at the Hammersmith Odeon on November 16 1982. The DVD was released by EMI Records on the 21st of September 2009 (October the 6th in the U.S.A) as a CD/DVD double pack.

Not only does this DVD contain the entire concert, it also contains all six videos made for tracks off the 'Rio' album, as well as two archived 'Top Of The Pops' performances.

This is a great CD/DVD collection, and a must-have for any Duran Duran fan.
I highly recommend it, and therfore give it a 5 out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed playback on Blu-Ray player., January 25, 2012
This review is from: NEW Live At Hammersmith '82 (DVD) (Audio CD)
Om my Blu-Ray player, I cannot access the Rio era videos nor access the Audio options menu. (Only a stuck white screen comes up for both.) I can access the video selection on my DVD player and on my computer. I took back my initial copy only to receive a second copy that demonstrates the exact same problems. This is very disappointing. I've gotten the latest updates for my Blu-ray player, so I don't know what's up. I have had no such problems with any of hundreds of other DVDs. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I'd hate to give this item a lower grade, because I absolutely love the concert. It is fantastic and even better than I hoped it might be. What energy! What great performances! Unfortunately, I can't watch the music videos on my primary system, which is half of the reason I bought this.

So, if you plan on playing this on a Blu-Ray player, there is cause to be wary.

5.0 out of 5 stars hmmm... but loved it..., June 15, 2011

This review is from: NEW Live At Hammersmith '82 (DVD) (Audio CD)
I read some reviews about the quality of this dvd/cd while I was waiting for it to arrive, and just had horror images implanted in my mind... visually on the dvd...(the cd was just like norm...) the dvd had only very minor defects that I noticed on my 10th or 60th viewing... this was from 1982 and the picture is not going to be completely flawless due to the difference in technology today verses 1982... but it is nearly flawless... a few snow flakes big deal..

I hope Simon gets well soon... and can't wait for the entire band to be able go and do one of the things they do best... play live the other being record new music... speaking of "All you need is now" is really an amazing CD. Hope you like it too...

Purchased this for Christmas for my son - a real DD fan. He loved it - said it had the standards and some cuts rarely heard so he was very pleased. Quick and easy purchased, new in package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes CDs worth buying again, February 23, 2010

This review is from: NEW Live At Hammersmith '82 (DVD) (Audio CD)
I hadn't bought an actual CD in years, but this one is worth it. The DVD is great too, the video isn't perfect, but heck, it's from '82. Lots of nice tv appearance extras. But the CD--it is just the best. You get more of a feel for the excitement of the live show than you do with the overproduced Arena, plus Andy just absolutely cuts loose on many songs. It's a shame after this his role was cut back so much on Seven and the Ragged Tiger.

The cover of "Make Me Smile" is so much more awesome in the context of the live album, between fantastic versions of Careless Memories and Girls on Film. Even the stage banter is pretty fun: "This song demands audience participation, and by that I mean dance!" Who else but Simon LeBon could say something that corny and have it come off cool?
