5.0 out of 5 stars The Kid, Uncensored, January 7, 2010
This review is from: NEW! The Lost Interview of the Great Ted Williams (DVD)
I'm old enough to have seen Ted Williams play at Fenway Park. He was--pretty much--the only reason to pay to see the Red Sox in the fifties--long before the Impossible Dream gave birth to Red Sox Nation. So, to see this incredible interview with Ted was a revelation. To watch the hero of that era speak openly (plenty of "f-bombs") and without malice about playing the game and dealing with his challenges is riveting.

Even at his advanced age, you can sense the pure joy that fills him as he casually chats about the rivalry with Joe DiMaggio, or his embarrassment at being too demonstrative after his All-Star home run in Detroit, or the pressure of being expected to break Babe Ruth's home run record. To me, the most pointed moment is when he challenges the idea that, had he had the opportunity, he would have bolted the Red Sox for more money. No, says Ted, his "loyalty to the Yawkeys" would have prevented that. Amazing stuff.

Bob Lobel, who performed this "lost interview", is at turns probing and patient as he coaxes Ted to open up on a range of issues never before confronted on camera. The only criticism is that the whole thing is too short--between 20 and 30 minutes. It leaves you hungering for more. I whole-heartedly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See For All Baseball Fans Old And New!!!, January 5, 2010

Truly a classic lost and found piece of baseball history that I think every fan of the game will enjoy! If you love baseball like I do you'll love this DVD. Ted Williams is shown in Fenway Park speaking from the heart and sometimes quite frankly about his legacy, the game, fans and the politics of baseball.

Although his career was well before my time, this interview gave me a great insight into the real man and the legend that you don't get in watered down network documentaries and candy coated league marketing hype. It's amazing that this rare footage has been sitting on the shelf for so long or that it's not part of someones personal collection.

While the DVD is a little short at 27 minutes, it is very professional with excellent picture quality and sound. The fact that it is no-holds-barred Ted Williams, no fluff, no candy coating and telling it like he sees it makes it well worth the modest price. Shipping was quick even over the holidays.
