4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start With a Few Problems
This game has the best graphics of any sports game I've ever seen, and it's extremely fun to play against a friend one on one. When playing in cold weather, each player's breath can be seen, which is just one of the awesome things you'll see here. A drawback is that you can't play a franchise mode like on Madden 2000, and this is a must now for die-hard football...

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphics are UNBELIEVEABLE BUT.........
I'm using my mother's account and I am a 19 year old football fanatic. Football is my life and if anyone from Sega is listening I have a few suggestions. FIRST and most important, bring in the Franchise mode. Second, I'd also like to see player progressions and player attributes. For example you can't create a QB and get him over 70 and since you can't progress you...

This game has the best graphics of any sports game I've ever seen, and it's extremely fun to play against a friend one on one. When playing in cold weather, each player's breath can be seen, which is just one of the awesome things you'll see here. A drawback is that you can't play a franchise mode like on Madden 2000, and this is a must now for die-hard football gamers. NFL 2K is better than Madden 2000 despite having less features because it simply feels more real. In Madden 2000, use the instant replay on pass receptions to see just how comical it looks when a pass just drops into a receiver's body without his hands moving, or his eyes focused on the ball. It looks as though you will not find this type of blocky and sometimes unrealistic gameplay on the Dreamcast. On NFL 2K, instant replays reveal true one-handed catches, balls going right through a receiver's outstretched hands, and other types of situations that look real. The running game in NFL 2K could use a little improvement, but overall this game is just pure fun and reality for anyone who enjoys playing football video games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best, December 8, 1999

The best sports game ever. Playability and season play are exceptional. Graphics and realism are impeccable. Truly a great addition to any sports fans' collection.

There are however a few glitches as are to be expected from a first generation sports game.

These include: Minor Audio problems: Some sound effects repeat and tend to last for the duration of the game. Rule problems: Kick offs out of bounds always place the receiving team at the 40. Even if the kick goes out in a superior position for the receiving team. Onside kick violations result in a re-kick! Bounderies are sometimes questionable. A receiver may appear to get two feet in or to be forced out by the defender, however these are ruled incomplete. Fair catches may be called by one computer player, but another catches and runs with the ball.

Even with these problems I have gotten more enjoyment out of my NFL 2K than any other game I've owned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining footbal video game to date, December 12, 1999

NFL2K is a very FUN game to play, with excellent graphics and sound. However, some things I'd like to see in future versions:

1. Career mode either with NFL team or a custom team.

2. Ability to develop players as the season progresses.

3. Ability to see player skills breakdown during the game (e.g. QB rating in accuracy, power, running speed, etc), and not just an overall rating.

4. Play routes on the VMU and not just the play names.

5. Ability to ground the ball to stop the clock after a quick lineup without calling an audible or timeout.

6. Varying NFL season schedules (currently always the same, unless you chose fantasy football mode)

These are just minor criticisms that do not really affect the playability of the game, but I think would increase the longevity of the game's appeal.

The first game I purchased was NFL2K for Sega Dreamcast. Once I started playing, I was amazed. If you are a football nut(like I am)you will love this game as well. The graphics are absolutly mindblowing. The players faces are so realistic. Gameplay is great. It has features that I love such as an awesome Fantasy Draft system. Running could be a little easier but you learn to work around it. The difficulties are amazing from Rookie all the way to All Pro. Never have I seen a football game with such depth. Its also a blast if you play multiplayer with a friend. If you are a sports person, this game is a MUST. If your not, get it anyway because it is one of the best(if not the best) sports game of all time! Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars NFL2K is a fantastic game!, December 6, 1999

NFL2K is probably the best football game I've ever seen. It's just so realistic in the graphics and the gameplay stands up as well. It's a 5-star must-have Dreamcast game, whether you're a big football fan or not.

The major selling point is the graphics. I though Madden, Gameday, QB Club etc. had good graphics but NFL2K blows them away. The players look very smooth and they walk and move just like real players. I'm not sure who did the mo-cap but hats off to them. Many times I caught myself thinking I was watching a real game.

Gameplay is what really matters though, and NFL2K does well. The control is tight and natural feeling and playcalling is a breeze. The passing game is very good and quite realistic. On Rookie mode you can complete a pass virtually every time but on Pro and All-Pro it gets harder. The first few times I played on Pro I couldn't complete a pass, but then I discovered something wonderful: Total Control Passing. This option allows you to control where the QB throws to his reciever, meaning he can throw behind, in front of, or to either side of the reciever to avoid getting picked by d-backs. If you lead your reciever properly you can complete a pass very frequently. The running game is a bit hard though. On Pro it's very hard to bust out big, Barry Sanders-style big runs but if you choose the right plays you can gain about 3-5 yards a pop. Here's a hint: if you go under Shotgun formation and pick the play just left of the one in the middle, it's a running play, you can bust out 15-20 yards on that play. Works for me, anyway.

Presentation is great, very TV-style enhanced by awesome commentary.

There are flaws, which others have listed, but there's not too much not to like in NFL2K. It's ncredible for a first effort, heck it's incredile for any effort! Five stars, a lot of fun. Can't wait 'till NFL2K1!

4.0 out of 5 stars For $20, a no brainer, October 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: NFL 2K (Video Game)
This game came with my DC - I've played at least 20 football sims, and this is the only one that has any stickiness to it at all (for me)! The controls are perfect - the knocks on the running game are probably legit, although you can average about 4 yds with the right play - there are no breakaways here. This game alone, let alone the NFL2K1 update coming out, are well worth the DC investment - highly recommended. For entertainment purposes, the game beats 99% of all console games ever created, regardless of the platform. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy football capability, January 19, 2000

The best part of this awesome game is the ability to draft a fantasy football team. The draft is about 59 rounds. The computer will automatically draft for all other teams round by round. You really have to manage your draft choices wisely. The only real detraction of NFL2K is beginner level is too easy and pro level is nearly impossible to have a passing game. Even with this flaw, it is still a 5 star game. The best football sim made to date!

5.0 out of 5 stars One Word: Awesome., December 14, 1999

Although NFL 2K takes a couple of days of sitting hour after endless hour getting used to what button to hit when, the overall performance and interaction this game offers are unmatched. The game is, in a word, awesome.

I'm a bigtime gamer, and I can honestly say that the graphics and animation of this game surpass any I've every played. The passes, runs and tackles are so close to the real thing that if the game were any more realistic, the game player would be wearing a helmet and shoulder pads.

There's a few kinks to be worked out for the next release, though. NFL 2.5K would be nice - I would hate to have to wait for a 2001 release. Anyway, the announcers sometimes make goofy, innaccurate calls, like saying something like, "The player really needs to focus and hold onto the ball - he was lucky his team recovered that fumble!" when, in reality, his team did not recover. Also, the announcers spend too much time repeating themselves and this gets old after a while. They also tend to rag on the poor quarterback a lot - until, of course, he completes a pass. Then, he's the best quarterback in the league. But overall, it's nice to finally see a game where the announcers are, at least 85% of the time, accurate in their remarks.

On the other hand, NFL 2K more than makes up for the announcers' innaccuracies by its great graphics and flexibility - allowing you to create your own teams and, yes, your own players. I finished a game last night against the Cowboys where I, yes ME, rushed for 225 yards. Although I cheated on the size of the player's arms, weight, height, speed and strength, it's still pretty cool to see your name on the back of an NFL jersey as you steamroll a Cowboy linebacker!

Don't want to write too much, but with this game, you will find there is never too much to say. It is definitely a must buy and proves to be reason enough to purchase the Dreamcast system. I plan on spending many more hours mastering offensive and defensive moves. Thank you, Sega.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you're a sports fan with a Dreamcast, you need this., December 3, 1999

Before getting to the gameplay, I have to mention the graphics. I've stood in a game store with NFL2K playing on a monitor in the window, and watched people give NFL2K the ultimate compliment: after casually watching the screen for a few seconds, they suddenly do a double-take, realizing that they're watching a computer game and not a televised football broadcast.

The gameplay doesn't quite live up to the graphics, but it makes a gallant attempt. There's a broad, well-organized inventory of plays to select from; and a special VMU playcalling mode allows you to select plays from your controller's screen, denying your human opponent any chance to spy on your play calls. (However, unlike the normal mode, which shows a full diagram of the players' routes for the available plays, the VMU only displays the play names. So if you're not enough of a football fan to recognize plays by their names alone, VMU playcalling won't work well for you.)

The AI puts up a ferocious defense against the run; it's certainly possible to effectively use the running game, but it requires a great deal of practice. So if you're like most players, you'll find yourself mounting a largely aerial attack, mixing in a few running plays to keep the defense honest. A good mixture of play calls is critical--the computer will shut you down unmercifully if you use a particular pass pattern too often. One potential snag: There are only three difficulty levels (Rookie, Pro and All-Pro), and the differences between them are severe; you may find that Pro is too easy but All-Pro is too unmercifully hard. But this is a solvable problem; for example, you can play on All-Pro for the first half of the game, then switch to Pro for the second half and see if you can mount a John Elway-style comeback.

This game certainly isn't perfect; it could use more difficulty levels, and the audio commentary gets repetitious quickly. But make no mistake about it: it's a great game, and (along with Soul Calibur) the best showcase of the Dreamcast's power. It's well worth the money.
