NFL2K2 REVIEW (plus some Madden 2002 comparisons),
By Rodney Rivers "Rod" (SF,CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NFL 2K2 (Video Game)
I am going to write a review of NFL2K2 but also compare it to MADDEN 2002 for those of you caught on the fence on which to buy. I'll point out what each game does better over the other:NFL2K2 Does better Over Madden 2002 : 3.Defensive backs actually play defense and cover people. Unlike in madden where the CPU cheats(Cpu somehow knows who your passing to right when you start to hit the button). Bad passes will get intercepted, so you have to be accurate with your throws and routes your run. MADDEN 2002 does better than NFL2K2: 4.Franchise mode in Madden 2002 is very deep. Nfl2k2 has a decent franchise mode but Madden's is much much better. In conclusion, both games are good. NFL2K2 is more of a Fun game overall where whereas Madden is more of a simulation but a bit boring due to the lack of atmosphere. Both games feature good gameplay and option features that the other doesn't.

NFL 2K2 is simply better than Madden.,

First, there's a distinction to be made between those gamers who want to play sports games and have a blast - and those who want to "live in the locker room" and spend time obsessing about and "managing" their teams. If you want to play football, get NFL 2K2. If you want to concern yourself with statistical analysis and the "age" of your players - go play Madden or Dungeons and Dragons. If you're the former - 2K2 is the better game. The gameplay is smoother and faster, the graphics are amazing, and the controller options give you a tremendous amount of freedom on both sides of the ball. The configurations make it almost easy for your QB to pumpfake (evade a tackler) run out of the pocket, juke another tackler with a spin move, and rocket one down low to a reciever who's actually scrambling while you do. It's simply realistic football. Don't be fooled by some reviews that spout about a need to have "real skills" to pass the ball. It's easy and effective. Choose a play and focus on one reciever. Run to the side of the field your intended reciever is on (if you come up against a blitzing Linbacker or unblocked D-End, hit your reciever's button quickly 2x to fake. The defender will jump or dive - and you can keep rolling). Keep an eye on your reciever and see if the DB behind or in front of your man. If he's behind - smash and hold the reciever's button for a bullet underneath the coverage. If the DB is in front or shallow, tap the button and use some touch. If your man is double/triple covered - a bullet might get in there. You can look for another open target - or just learn where the panic button is and throw it away. You won't complete every pass, but neigther did Montana - the more you play the easier it gets. Also, when it comes to play selection, the games AI actually does a pretty bang-up job (especially defensively), you can let AI make suggestions, or choose plays outright. Comprehensiver on field action is what 2K2 is all about. Back to the initial point: 2K2 is better than Madden. (...) My review and my opinion.

Off the hook!!!! The Greatest Football Video Game, ever!!!!,
By Dennis F. Towle (Hayward, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NFL 2K2 (Video Game)
I recently played this game on a demo Playstation 2 console at the Playstation Superstore(METREON) in San Francisco. The graphics and gameplay completely blew me away! I have never seen a football simulation look so good, before I discovered NFL 2K2. The attention to detail on the players' faces, uniforms, the stadiums and sideline activity are phenomenal! The T.V. broadcast appearance of this game really makes you feel like this is a live football game! The gameplay is awesome and flawless! The quarterback passes the ball with smooth motion! The passes are caught on well executed jumps(the game player has to time these) by the receiver! The ball carrier moves realistically and he fights and stumbles for those extra yards after the defender puts a hard hit on him! The defense is equally fun and challenging....you have to work hard to get your linemen and linebackers through the offensive linemen to get to the QB....sacks aren't as easy to get, like in another game(Madden 2002)....you'll have to work for it! Defensive backs cover the receivers well and double-team when needed. Overall, this game is an absolute marvel to play....you won't be disappointed! Some hard-core players have complained that the added franchise feature is lame and very shallow....I have yet to see that, so I don't know. The gameplay and graphics are what have made this the King of football video games (sorry Madden series, it's true)! The graphics and speed of X Box's games are no better than Playstation 2's....I thought I'd add that in! Enough said; buy yours here today for your Playstation 2 system! It doesn't get any better than this!!!! (...)

THE BEST FOOTBALL GAME EVER!! (well, so far),
By Tomalov (Miami, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NFL 2K2 (Video Game)
OK We've all heard the arguments for the best football game ever. Is it Madden? Is it Fever? We'll I'm here to tell you folks, all the hodge podge should go in one ear and out the other. NFL 2K2 is the best football game on any platform today.I own one on PS2 and like many other people I had to decide between Madden 2002 and NFL 2K2. I ended up with 2K2 in a wierd twist of fate and fate couldn't have done any better. The game is amazing. Not only do the players bodies look lifelike and move naturally, the players faces look exactly like their human coterparts!! Find that in Madden or Fever! Don't bother looking cause its not there. With endless animations the game is very realistic. From your quarterback getting driven to the ground by a blitzing linebacker to your running back turning sideways to fit through holes in the line in short yardage situations, the gameplay is overall the best I have ever seen in a football game. The commentary is very good although a little repetitive at times. The commentators do a very good job at play by play, stats, and remarks about the game. The one downfall of the game is its difficulty settings. The game has 3 settings: Rookie,Pro and All Pro. At rookie you can completely demolish your opponent by bouncing off tackles for huge gains or sacking the opponent 3 downs straight. Hey, its fun when your first learning the game but after a while it gets old. Well all you got to do is turn the difficulty to Pro right! WRONG!!! The change in the difficulty is like playing the 178th ranked Pop Warner team in Ontario Canada to playing a Pro Bowl NFL team. Well no more bouncing of tacklers for big yards. NOPE. Be prepared to claw and scratch for every inch you gain. Think your going to sack the opponents quarterback 3 downs in a row? NOPE AGAIN GOOD SIR! Be prepared to run a prevent defense everyplay just to keep the computer out of the end zone. (which usually never works anyway) But other than the somewhat frustrating difficulty at times this game is one to own. It has a replay value of like 100,000 or something and is definetly the game to have for the PS2. (P.S.- Don't let the difficulty intimitate you to much. Its really not that bad once you get used to it. BUY THIS GAME!!!)

ok game,

This game is ok. the graphics are pretty good. but the gameplay lacks a little. on rookie mode, i beat the rams 90-0 and i was the LIONS! on the next hardest level i couldnt even score. the game needs a more difficulty levels to suit the players skill. this fault makes the game frustrating to play on pro mode and boring to play on rookie. i dont even want to know what its like on all pro. also, some penalties really blow. i run a kickoff or a punt for a touch down and half the time it gets taken back because of a clipping penalty. the same is with passing, i get a good pass then there is a penalty for an inelegable receiver. the penalties that the player has no control over really [stinks]. luckily, you can turn some penalties off, but you have to do it every time you turn the game on, the settings dont save.As far as the graphics go, they are excellent. the players actually look like they do in real life. the players look good and are easy to control. I give the game 3 stars ONLY because it has great graphics, if you like a game w/ good gameplay better you might want a different game. This game may be good for you, but rent it before you buy it.

This game blows the doors off any previous game, Madden or otherwise. The replays allow you to see, with detail, exactly what happened in a play.If you need any assurances that your adrenaline will flow or that you will get lots of replay value, read no further. This game provides plenty of controller-throwing fun and high-fiving.

This game is great for those who really knows football. Your play calling has to be right on in order to keep your drive going. Miss your defensive assignment and you'll be burnt for big yardage. Everything about this game makes football sense. The gameplay is great. The graphic is great. This one is for the real fans!!

[All Flash, No Substance],

If you are interested in franchise mode then forget it. This game is horrible. Why? 1). Cannot tell if a player increased or decreased from one year to the next. You have to remember from the prior year. 2) How old are these guys? I have to memorize everyone and know their ages. Can you believe the players ages are not displyed anywhere? I drafted (fantasy draft) guys that were 35. What is the draft order? 3). Trades? You cannot tell a guys stats for that year or prior years. You have to go back to STATS. I wanted to trade a guy and check his stats. In Madden you click a button and get the data you need (age, position (ss,cb,fs, etc), rating, etc. but in 2k2 you got [nothing]. The same goes for depth chart. If you want to chages guys based on stats you have no clue. 4). What position are these guys? SS, CB, FS. 5). No coaching stats. You cannot create a coach and attach it to a team. In madden you could get fired or can change teams. You get no information. 6). Finally, you cannot create a team or player in franchise mode. Why would they give you this option if you can only use it for a season? Maybe I am missing it but there is no way to do it and add to the free agent lisiting. The game is all flash and no substance. Please buy Madden. Madden has some minor issues but if you like to play franchise it is by far the best.

NFL 2k2 or Madden?,
By
This review is from: NFL 2K2 (Video Game)
OF Madden, NFL 2k2, QB club, ESPN NFL Primetime which is the one to buy and play? Well, clearly the two contenders are Madden and NFL 2k2 for playstation but which one satisfies the average player will very much depend on personal gaming style and the subjective determination of what is real "virtual" football. The Sega version is visually beautiful (although there are some slow-downs) offers great commentary and has nice touches like a scrolling ticker with updated scores. Its play, however, is very quick and has the feel of an arcade version of football. To make it more realistic turn the game play down to slow. Running is very difficult at the Pro or above level but can be done with patience (hint--let the CPU find the hole). Passing is also a challenge but can be accomplished if the player is not too greedy on every down. There are no obvious flaws in the AI although its clock management can be puzzling. Also there appears to be a bug which allows time to run out rather than kick a field goal late in the half. If visually gorgeous football, with arcade like action, is what you are looking for, then this game has no equal. More simulation minded types should look to Madden and at all costs avoid Primetime.
