Amazon.com Review

Football is a violent sport to begin with, but what would it be like without rules? The answer is Blitz 2001, a wild, arcade-style football free-for-all. While the core concepts of Blitz are essentially the same as real football--throw and run to score touchdowns while trying to prevent your opponent from doing the same--the play here tends to get a bit dirty without details like penalties and good sportsmanship.

In Blitz, the key to stopping the pass is tackling receivers before they ever get into their routes. After a great play, celebration is over the top, with players doing cartwheels, pretending to ride horses, and shouting at the top of their lungs. But the victimized party doesn't have to sit back and just take it. They can pick up the celebrating player and throw him to the turf--and then jump on top of him.

Because this is the Nintendo 64, the graphics are clear and the movement is fast, which is crucial to the success of a game like this and the main reason why the Blitz series on the technically inferior PlayStation has never quite cut it. Of course, four can play at once, which is where Blitz really shines, and new to the game this year are some entertaining minigames. Adding to the cartoonish fun of this game, a player can literally catch on fire--like some mythological football demigod--after reeling in three balls in a row or making three consecutive sacks. It's funny and kind of scary to see several flaming linebackers accelerating toward the quarterback.

The one small catch to all this is that players who bought Blitz 2000 will notice very few differences besides updated rosters, leaving it a dubious purchase for those familiar with the franchise. Those new to it, however, are sure to discover reserves of testosterone that they never thought they had. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Playing with three other players is infinitely fun
  • Includes new minigames, such as a QB challenge
Cons:
  • It's the same gameplay as Blitz 2000 with only minor technical improvements

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Game!, November 12, 2000

This review is from: NFL Blitz 2001 (Game Cartridge)
This game is very, very up-to-date. They have the Rams and the Titans as the best teams. The graphics aren't the best but the game play is very good. You are in control of the game 100% no questions asked. You call the plays and there is 3 pages of plays to choose from. This game also has the season and tournament options. The game also has mini-party games. There are many to choose from. They're awesome if you're alone or if you're at a sleepover with a 100 friends. Definetly worth buying. I paid lots for mine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Fun I've Ever Had With a Football Game, December 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: NFL Blitz 2001 (Game Cartridge)
Fans of NFL 2K1 or the Madden series may not find interest in this game due to it's essential lack of rules and overall seriousness, but if you are looking for a very entertaining party/solo game, Blitz 2001 is for you. Fast, progressive gameplay that's chock full of side-splittingly funny antics, (such as the players catching fire and the wickedly painful-looking tackles,)makes Blitz 2001 an adrenaline rush all on it's own. Players may find themselves screaming at the top of thier lungs and throwing fits of excitement while engaged in 2-4 player arcade mode. Lots of options to suit players' needs plus every NFL team, each with it's own players and stats make sure that this game will never get old.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOOM! Baby!, December 28, 2000

Powerbombs, reverse bulldogs, touchdowns, hail marys, etc. This is what you'll find in NFL Blitz 2001. Sound violent? Sound unsuitable for all ages? Well, it is violent but in is perfectly suitable. Theres no cussing and no shouting cuss words all over the place and there is no blood, or guts or anything else. The announcers comments are entertaining to hear and are funny too from "Hey he can't do that!" to "That's totally unprofessional". The post celebrations are funny, from players riding invisible ponies to the good old tossing the ball behind you. The player may be tackled and down on the ground but it doesn't stop there... why not pile on top of the guy? The game has it's four-playerr mode making it even better and the mini games are fun and challenging. This title is great for parties and sleepovers and can keep someone entertained for hours. The excitement is great for example when it's the fourth quarter with ten seconds to go and the difference of one touchdown seperates the score. The ball is snapped and your backpedalling. Recievers are calling "Any day now!", "Pass it to me" and you franticlly search for one that's open. Suddenly you hit the button and the ball is sailing through the air like a plane. This is the pass that defines the game! In the background you here the announcer call out "It's the Hail Mary!". The ball seems to be to far but you press the button and the reciever lunges. Everything seems to be in slow motion as the receiver grabs the ball and falls into the endzone. TOUCHDOWN! Flashes across the screen and you jump up and scream with joy. Seem exciting? Want to experience it for yourself? Then run to the store and pick up this great title because it's the only football game you'll ever need!
