Better than Madden, and way better than NCAA 2004,
By Justin Startz (Savannah, Georgia USA) - See all my reviews

This is a very solid game, probably the best 989 football game in a very long time. The gameplay has been tweaked, in all the right ways. One of the only downsides is you have to put in time to learn how to play defense properly. Cause at first you cant stop the computer from doing anything. And alot of times receivers are too wide open for their own good(on your team and the computers). But the running is fantastic, the tackles are AWESOME, and the kicking game has a fresh new face. All in all I would say that if your frustrated with Madden, give this game a test drive.

Newer doesn't mean it's better,

At first look, this game seems exellent. The game has GREAT graphics, and the commentary makes this game sound like you're really watching a game. I think the draft simulater and create your own player was made and designed fairly well. Also, the menu system is easy to work through after you explore a little bit. But the reason why this game doesn't deserve 5 stars is the time when your on the field. First, EVERY SINGLE THROW from a quaterback would hit the reciver if he wasn't blocked, even if it's a 2nd or 3rd string quarterback. Another problem is when your the offense, it's too easy to score even if you set the difficulty to max, so at the end of the game the score could be like 65-32, completly unrealistic. If you wanted to make the quaterback to run for a tiny first down, all you get is a 5 yard loss. Also as the defense it's simple to stop the run, but pass defense is almost non existant, you have to smash the jump button at just the right moment or the ball will go through the defenders hand. And Every so often when get ready for the snap as the offense, a glitch in the software causes one of the opposing teams linebackers to just run around in circles so the game thinks it's still setting up and you can' snap the ball. While this goes on, the play clock keeps running finally forcing you a 5 yard delay of game penelty. Personally, I'd rather play my old Madden 2000 playstation game then this "state of the art one."

This was the last game I have and will ever buy from 989 sports. Graphics look great, gameplay is ridiculous. Season mode sucks, glitches everywhere, its impossible to make an interception. This game really frustrated me, I played it a few times, and just got to angry with it to play it anymore. I can't beleive they actually released this game. If you play one exibition game, you will see at least 5 glitches. But I guess if you just care about looks...eh, its ok.

This game is good. But it had no competition with Madden. Madden is simply better than Gameday. The cover should have have another player. Ladainian Tomlinson is Madden material.

A Great Thing Ruined,

I finally got around to getting a PS2. One of the first games I bought was GameDay 2004. I assumed it was a safe bet since I've always been a fan of GameDay and never cared for Madden. Boy, was I wrong! GameDay is horrible. There are so many problems I would swear it was a beta copy.Although the graphics are amazing (and still blow away Madden), the gameplay has gotten much worse. There is absolutely no defense (on either the player team or the CPU team). Even with changing the settings to make the CPU offense the worst it could possibly be, I was unable to stop them from scoring on all but 3 drives (I'm not the best at the game, but after years of playing older versions, I'm no slouch either). Then changing the CPU defense to be the best, I scored on every drive (they did hold me to a field goal once, but I probably would've made the 4th down conversion if I had tried). The two teams in the game were the Eagles (my team) and the Buccaneers (CPU team) (two of the best in the game), so it's not that the team I controlled was ranked considerably higher than the CPU team. It's just terrible AI. There were also two MAJOR bugs. Everytime I tried to play a season, after I finished the first game, it would get hung up on the loading screen to go back to the main menu. So playing a season was impossible as I could never exit the first game (I tried it 6 times, so it's not like the old versions that would do that occasionally). The other one was several times the QB would throw an incomplete pass and it would be ruled a fumble (the QB wasn't getting sacked, just standing there, so there was no way it could be considered anything other than an incomplete). It happened to both the player team and the CPU team. Turning the ball over blows, but turning the ball over on an incomplete pass is just not acceptable. The only plus about the game is that the graphics are truly amazing. Beyond that, Madden is far and away the better game. I'll rent 2005 and hope it gets better because, although I'll play Madden, I'm not a fan and hope that 989 can fix what they broke in what was the best football game around. GameDay was one of the reasons I bought PS2 and not XBox, hopefully my decision will be redeemed with the next release.

This game is lousy. It makes presumptions about the NFL season, that are quite frankly ridiculous, in this age of near parity with salary caps etc. It simulates the teams based on the previous years performance, than you go through the motions of selecting plays, only to have them upendded by the almighty Buc's (the real Buc's are of course on ice for post season). It actually simulates New England as an imcompetent team, and Tampa and Miami as nearly unbeatable. It is also complex for the new user. If you try to play through the season, just see if you can get past the 'bye' week without getting a major headache. It get's two stars for fairly competent graphics, it loses the rest for sheer stupidity.

Terrible - why does Sony even still bother?,

This review is from: NFL GameDay 2004 (Video Game)
Well, graphics and animation might be good if this was on an original Playstation, but on the PS2, they are pathetic. Not to mention the worst AI a football game has ever seen. The defense has no clue what is going on or how to react.Any football game on any system is better, so stay away from this one.
