Editorial Reviews

The Chicago Bears - they just sound mean. Try and score on them and they'll tear you apart limb by limb. And for almost 90 years, that's pretty much been the case. Bears Football means defense. George Halas started a dominant defensive tradition in the 1920s, and it continues today. The Bears have won nine NFL Championships on the shoulders of the team's identity as a big, strong, attacking defense. In this exclusive two-disc DVD set, the Emmyr award-winning storytellers of NFL Films reveal the greatest defensive players in Chicago Bears history and unveil an all-time starting 11 Bears defensive legends. Watch the Galloping Ghost, Red Grange, make one of the greatest defensive plays in football history. Relive Hall of Famer Doug Atkins leading the "Monsters of the Midway" to the 1963 NFL Championship. See the development of the "46 Defense" under coordinator Buddy Ryan, and the men who led that innovation on the field, Mike Singletary and Gary Fencik. We'll examine the Bears' defensive legacy, from Bulldog turner to Dick Butkus to Brian Urlacher. A Tradition of Defense: The Chicago Bears will document the greatest defensive players of one of the NFL's most storied franchises. It is a must for any Windy City football fan.

He LOVED it and has watched it multiple times throughout the year.

That kind of defensive punishment has been the hallmark of great Bear teams throughout their history and is documented in this video.

Regardless of the above, I still enjoyed the DVD and I think any Bears fan would enjoy it as well.

Born in 1952, I was just old enough to notice NFL football when the Bears drafted Dick Butkus at Middle Linebacker. I was a running back on my grade school football team but also a defensive back, so I LOVED Gale Sayers and gradually grew to love Mr. Butkus as well. To this day his style of play and his attitude towards opponents is why I love Chicago Bear football.

Butkus was one of those physically strong men who you can identify simply by shaking their hand. When he hit a guy, he folded up like a rubber table at the church social... and sometimes they stayed hit to the point of being carried off the field.

That kind of defensive punishment has been the hallmark of great Bear teams throughout their history and is documented in this video.

Butkus, Singletary, and now Urlacher... you get to see them all in action here. There have been other heavy hitters on the Bears' defense over the years (Ed O'Bradovich, Jim Dent, Gary Fencik, Otis Wilson and Wilber Marshall) but these three gentlemen of the middle define the lineage that is passed down from year to year.

There is a nice segment devoted to the 1985 Super Bowl team under Buddy Ryan as Defensive Coordinator. There is no argument that that defense was one of the all-time greats in NFL history. 'Intimidation' isn't a strong enough word to define what those boys brought to the table. I recall that they tended to elicit some measure of fear in the QB's they faced that year. For example, opposing offenses did not score a single point in their first two playoff games prior to the Super Bowl.

As a fan of NFL Football, if you love watching a good defense take apart a nice, shiny offense, you will love this disc... and you won't even have to be a Bears' fan first.

This DVD, A Tradition of Defense: The Chicago Bears, is very good and complete as far as the history of great Bear Defenses is concerned. They go all the way back to the 20's and 30's with Grange and McAfee. Bulldog Turner, Buffone, George, Atkins, etc. are covered. Of course the 46 Defense is covered and my favorite character, Steve McMichael, made the all time team as a DT.

The DVD ranks the greatest Bears by position on defense so just for that it's a must have. It also contains a tribute to Papa Bear George Halas which any true fan would appreciate. The DVD is a little dated as a couple of Bears that are arguably the best we've seen at their respective positions, although mentioned, were not given the nod. In addition, players interviewed griped that Dent is still not in the Hall of Fame, an oversight which we know has since been rectified. Regardless of the above, I still enjoyed the DVD and I think any Bears fan would enjoy it as well.

This is a GREAT DVD set we got for our son who like us is a HUGE Bears fan. What we like most is that it doesn't focus entirely on the most recent players and really has a great span of information from start to finish. It's a fun time watching the great plays and players captured on film. I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates football and not just Bears fans because many of the players covered that really shaped the game that is played today. GO BEARS!!!!

This item is well worth the money... 2 DVDs for the price of one!! Definitely a must have for any Bears fan. I, myself, am not a huge NFL fan (this was purchased for my boyfriend for Christmas 2010), and I even thought it was interesting, and enjoyed watching it, esp. the DVD about the 1985 season!!

I have to say I didn't watch much of this video because I bought it for my son for Christmas but my son and husband are Bears football nuts and they loved it. Would definitely buy again.
