4.0 out of 5 stars Go ahead, just try to score September 16, 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Update: Last week, I had a 0-0 game go to a shootout against a player named IAMCHINESE (or I_AM_CHINESE). Anyway, he used a glitch that allows you to score every time in the shootout. Why doesn't EA address these issues?

I started out with high hopes for this game. However, after playing it for 3 months, my lofty expectations have turned to that all-too-familiar feeling of disappointment with an EA sports NHL hockey game.

At the surface, things seem great. The graphics are attractive, and the gameplay feels responsive. I do like the skill stick; it's a great improvement to the game and it allows for more creative offense as well as defense. However, once you want more than a cursory experience of playing hockey, this game begins to unravel.

I should preface the rest of this review by stating I've owned probably a dozen or more NHL games (EA's NHL series and the 2K series as well) since my first game: NHL 94 for the SNES. Also, I should let it be known that I feel the actual gameplay is the most critical feature of the hockey gaming experience. If the play is unrealistic, or if it slow and unresponsive, no amount of special franchise modes or extra bells and whistles can compensate. And my review focuses on online play, not playing against the computer.

So, now to take off the gloves. This game is absolutely terrible when it comes to realistic gameplay. The main offender is, by far and away, the goaltending. NHL 09 cannot recognize the difference between good scoring chances and poor scoring chances. Goalies are simply out of this world. They don't have any problem with stopping 15-20 one-timers per game, or with gloving slapshots from 10 feet out in the slot. They'll make impossible save after impossible save and leave you in frustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Game Ever October 21, 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I ve been a huge fan of hockey video games ever since Blades of Steel on Nintendo. I have to say that NHL 09 tops them all. The graphics are amazing making it feel like you are watching a game on TV. The commentary is probably the best sports game play by play I have ever heard. The only down fall of this game is the difficulty to score a goal. Other than that its a must play for all sports lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard but you can learn January 24, 2009
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is hard, but you still have lots of fun playing it. The first couple of games I played against friends and we all noticed how hard it was to score. As I kept playing against the game, I learned that scoring is damn near impossible. So I just said forget my pride and turned the diff level to rookie with full accuracy on my shot. Before I knew it I learned how to toe up the puck and fire it top shelf. I would have given this game 4.5, but we can't do it. In all everything is good except for the sensitivity when shooting the puck. Lets Go Devs!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Sports Game PS3 has to offer! April 25, 2009
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I sold my copy of NHL09 and had to repurchase on Amazon because I missed it so much. The Best Sports Game PS3 has to offer! Hockey translates very well on the PS3 and this game takes it to levels not reached by any other. If you're a hockey fan of any kind, even if you like the AHL or any of the European leagues they have them! Incredible depth to the game!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars NHL 09 January 12, 2009
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have been playing the EA Sports NHL games since the earlly 90's, the nhl games over that span have been hit and miss. This year however EA Sports has nailed this one. What seperates this game is the be a pro mode where you get to create your own character and take him from the minors to the pros. Also the ability to play on different lines with dofferent line mates is a lot of fun too. If you have ever played an nhl game in the past and have even a slight interest, this NHL 09 is the game to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best NHL game from EA in years October 11, 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
It's been a while since I've played an NHL game from EA that didn't feel like I was still playing the previous year's version. Thankfully, NHL 09 changes all that. That arcade feel that EA's NHL series has been infamous for? It's pretty much gone, and in it's place instead is an actual realistic simulation that rivals the 2K series. Opponent AI has also been considerably amped, helping make the game more simulation-based than ever before. The new additions to the already excellent skill stick are superb, with new manuvers and tactics for clogging passing lanes and putting a new emphasis on defensive-based hockey. If using the skill stick isn't your thing, there's a two-button control scheme based on the classic NHL '94 that is a pure joy to use. The Be a Pro mode is immersive beyond belief, and the game looks gorgeous (especially on the PS3) and plays beautifully. Online play suffers from some flaws however, most notably being an interface that isn't too user-friendly, and some occasional connection issues. Flaws aside though, NHL 09 is without a doubt the best NHL game to come from EA in years, and if you're a hockey fan it goes without saying that NHL 09 deserves your attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it. September 11, 2008
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well... this is by far the best hockey game I have played in a long time. EA introduced be a player mode... which I think is new and unused in a hockey game before it's time. It treats you like a new pro player that has to work their way up from the minors and play good to get to the NHL. Other than that, the gameplay seems more real than 08 and there are a few new features that add to the frustration of playing hockey. Okay, I am going to throw down and say it is an improvement over NHL 08 but I can say I probably will still play both! For the PS3 the graphics are much more engineered to smoother pixelation and is candy to the eye... not sure if I like all the interactive menus, but I can live with it! If you have the dough... go for it!
