Great game. By great game, I mean that it is incredibly amusing to watch my boyfriend toss his Xbox controller across the room in fury as he loses to random user-generated teams and screams obscenities so unique that you would think he was composing his own dictionary of hatred and man-tears.

So far, I've played ~160 games (I had the early release) in EASHL with most being in club play, but a handful of OTP games as well. The good things I've seen so far are that hitting generally works, skating seems reasonably fluid once you have enough stats on your player, goalies aren't making saves they shouldn't and aren't letting in too many weak goals, the new EASHL seasons makes things a bit more exciting, stick lifting now seems to work well enough and not give constant penalties, and that the AI seems to be improving on the offensive side.

On the other hand, it also has a few areas for improvement. AI on D during a rush is almost useless and gives up the toe drag wrist shots from the high slot as it has in the last 5 years or so. On top of that, these seem to be going in at an alarming rate for players who likely are well below having their legend card yet. Larger players seem to have a big balance boost, which makes it nearly impossible to knock down a player more than 4 inches taller than you. Poke checking seems inconsistent. Forcing passes through defenders works too often, and offense seems to be much more able to pick up loose pucks than on defense.

While at first fighting seemed like an improvement over the old system, after getting into a few dozen fights the majority of online players just seem to mash the punch button and manage to win more often than not. There doesn't seem to be much of a way around this either. Using R2 to dodge and counter is somewhat difficult to do, and if they manage to connect with a hit, you might as well just let them win. At least the old system gave you a ton more control as far as dodging went.

I do like this game, I really do but it seems as though there EA may have rushed this one to the stands. I'll do some pros and cons.

Pros
1. The game play is phenomenal. Very fluid, you have full control, but it still has that "out of control" kinda feel that makes hockey so fun. The deking is easy to use (difficult to master), shooting, passing, and what-have-you are reasonably ergonomic.
2. The new Be A Pro mode is awesome. Interviews and endorsements add some much needed depth.
3. The other game modes are pretty fun too.
4. As usual, the soundtrack is awesome.
5. I like that by playing regular modes, you earn EA pucks which you can then spend in the card game mode. This is an awesome way to play through various game modes, enjoy the game, and still be able to advance in the card game without having to actually play it. Warning: you can only get 2500 pucks at once. Redeem them and you start back at zero. I lost a couple hundred pucks that way.
6. The graphics are really good as usual.
7. The fighting engine is orders of magnitude better than the First Person mode of NHL 13.

Now for the cons
1. The AI in this game is stupid. Like literally the dumbest sports AI I've encountered in the 3D era of video gaming. I've seen teammates stand perfectly still while the puck slips between their legs. Defensemen (on my team anyway) will let just anyone blow by them and are often out of position. There's a glitch in Be A Pro where, during a line change, the guy who is supposed to be replacing you is stuck on the boards behind the goaltender. Errant passes make it look like the AI is passing it to your opponents half the time. When in your own zone, the team will toss the puck along the boards every-single-time.

Easily my son's favorite Xbox game of the year. He has been playing it steadily over the past 3 months and never gets bored.

I was getting a little bored of NHL 13, so I just decided to upgrade a little. It is so much different than '13. First of all, there is so much good about this game, but there are downsides to it. I'll start with the good. The hitting, fighting, and overall gameplay is much improved. I'm glad they ditched the first person fighting, but third person is kinda confusing at first. The hits and checks feel like I'm in my screen playing. There are other great things to the game, but I'll start going to the cons. The scoring is so strange. For example I was playing earlier and there would be this one spot I would shoot and score over half of the time. Anyways, the cpu was playing poorly and the score was 3-8 at the end of the second period. I played even harder in the third, and for however reason, they found ways around and made it 8-8 with less than ten seconds left. They lugged it forward and magically there was the opponent in front of my goal who scored with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. Does it get anymore fixed to win then that? I wanted to break the disc! I guess they were trying to give me a game, but come on. Another thing is the commentary. It sounds like a repeat of NHL 13 with a few new lines thrown in there. I don't know if it's just me, but the commentators sounded like they were bored out of their minds! They also needed to do work on the crowd! When I was playing the other day, I scored on the opponent and my home crowd sat and booed me! It seems like it's accuracy was off. When they do get "excited", it sounds like they're getting add thrilled as being on a merry-go-round. But when I score, they usually go insane like there's a riot, so I get confused on what's happening every once and a while. I do think though that the graphics are also better by quite a bit compared to '13.Read more ›
