5.0 out of 5 stars Almost (but not quite) like NFL Blitz for the NHL.
For fans of the previous EA NHL games, this one is a departure. The slapshots sound like small explosions! The skaters are faster than any previous EA NHL game, and the hits are harder. Famed color commentator Bill Clement provides much of the dialogue during gameplay, and there are many phrases used in quite obscure situations that makes this game a sheer joy to play...

3.0 out of 5 stars "NHL 2000 Hits the Post"
The month that "NHL 2000" was released, millions of fans scurried to their closest electronic shack, looking forward to discovering if EA Sports had taken the virtual National Hockey League to a more realistic and entertaining level. For fans of the previous EA NHL games, this one is a departure. The slapshots sound like small explosions! The skaters are faster than any previous EA NHL game, and the hits are harder. Famed color commentator Bill Clement provides much of the dialogue during gameplay, and there are many phrases used in quite obscure situations that makes this game a sheer joy to play. The fighting is still rather lame if you're used to fighter games, but fighting isn't point, is it? It's bash your opponent through the glass, check 'em until you hear that ACL tear, and slap that puck like a missile into the back of the net. This is a VERY fun game, and I'd say it's the best overall hockey game I have EVER played. (And that's going way back to the Atari days.) If you are a fan of hockey video games, this one is THE ONE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bottom line, it's just a fun game to play, March 9, 2000

I've been getting the EA Sports hockey titles since the Sega Genesis and usually I'm pretty satisfied. There's always one or two (or three) annoying things about the game that could be fixed and NHL 2000 is no different. But the bottom line for me is the game is just a lot of fun to play. Yes the AI could be better and the game may move too fast and the big checks are a little ridiculous, and normally I'm more for the simulation aspect of a game....but I can't stop playing it. The franchise mode, while not as deep as MAdden football gives this game tremendous replayability. I bought the game at the start of the NHL season and I'm still playing it regularly. I can't say that for any other games I've purchased.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Game!, February 23, 2000

EA couldnt possibly do any better. Just the option to pick 1 team and stay with that team is enough for me. I hated having to scroll through the schedule and mark games for my team. The gameplay is considerably faster than previos versions, plus there doesnt seem to be the "hot Spot" from which you can score against any goalie.

The main feature I liked was the career mode. Losing players through free agency and retirement and having to sign/draft replacements. My only complaint is the free agents declare after the draft, leaving you to scramble to sign a replacement for a player you hadnt planned on losing

I also wish the Stanley Cup celebration was better, but all in all the best hockey game i've ever played.

I think NHL2000 was a good improvement over the 99 version. As long as you're not overly concerned with a few minor things that could be better (like fighting, scoring on breakaways is difficult) this game gives the hockey fan everything they could want, all the teams, players and uniforms (alternate jerseys!). If you're into stats it's all there, if you like to trade players you can do that and make a weak team stronger over multiple seasons. You can even recreate the World Championship in tournament mode with national teams. If you like hockey this game can keep you occupied.

5.0 out of 5 stars NHL 2OOO-A superb hockey game, July 28, 2000
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NHL 2000 (Video Game)
NHL 2OOO is an entertaining and fun hockey game to play over and over again. The modes are great, including great difficulty settings and create-a-player. It has all the NHL teams, and even has two custom teams you can use, the EA Blades and the EA Storm. There are lots of view and sound options, not to mention fast-moving, very accurate graphics. The announcers occasionally get annoying, yet are still fun with all their quips. The music is good. It is fun using the create-a-player, where you can do almost anything and even cheat creating super-players. There are lots of teams from other countries, and there is a great amount of hockey terms including one-timers, big hits, wristers, backhanders, and slap shots that are easy to execute. And referring to a previous review, you can just create a super player and trade him and if you use speed burst, the up and under move, and the slapshot, it is fairly easy to score, even on All-Star. Overall, a fun and entertaining game that you will want to play for hours.

This game is very cool. It is very fast and the players can stop on a dime. The shots also seem to be more accurate. I would like to see the fighting enhanced and made more realistic and the scoring definitely needs to be limited. I play a pretty tight defense and always let up 7 goals a game but I score like 12. This needs to be fixed! Otherwise, the hits are awesome and the speed is great.

A Kid's Review

(...) But any way this game is so cool you will never stop playing it. The graphics, hits, and goals are so awsome. I played this game all day and I am 7-1-2 in my season. The only thind that stinks about this game is that you can't create your own player. You can do dekes and spins that would confuse the goalie that he will just dive on the ground. The game is fair I been having games with score 3-1, 2-1, 1-0 and so on. If you like intense games this is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars WAY better than NHL 99, November 30, 1999

My friends and I played alot of NHL '98, perhaps still the best hockey game for the PSX. We passed on '99, because it was flawed in many ways. This version corrects those flaws for the most part. Game play is quick and fun, and it's easy to become immersed. My main complaint: the fighting sucks! It was just about perfect in '98, but with this you just hit as many buttons as you can and hope for the best...

The month that "NHL 2000" was released, millions of fans scurried to their closest electronic shack, looking forward to discovering if EA Sports had taken the virtual National Hockey League to a more realistic and entertaining level. Following the successfully encouraging opening week of "NHL 2000", the buying rate drastically dropped, and didn't look back. Revered by dissapointed gamers as a carbon copy of "NHL '99", "NHL 2000" just wasn't able to make it happen for anyone that wasn't a hard-core hockey buff. When yours truly first sampled "NHL 2000", I too, felt that I would have been better off buying 100 sets of shoe laces, or 25 pairs of fingernail clippers. Feeling conflicted when seeing the thrilling advertisements, I decided to give it a second chance and evaluate what was on "NHL 2000" that wasn't yet introduced on the "NHL '99" version. When I dove deeply into the game, I realized the high quality of the wide range of possibilities and non-encrypted gifts that helped out the image of this game. The ads on the ice gave a boost to it's realism, not to mention the crowd expanding to cheers AND boo's. The controls let you do anything you could in a real game, and the special effects are really something: the players have their faces molded to look just like the real men.

There were a few major cons that were in the previous NHL Playstation versions that failed to get attended to. First of all, it isn't too much to ask for the correct goal horns. All of them are the same, no matter what building the game is in. In "NHL Face Off", the real goal horns are brought to your TV. Second, the physical aspect is very weak. The fighting in this game is a travesty to the way it actually is, and the body checking is overdone. Finally, there are just too many slap shots. Seven out of ten shots fired by the computer are slappers, even from close-range one-timers. Despite these negativities, the game is fun and doesn't get old.

This game will satisfy casual gamers and leave hardcore gamers frustrated. I hate to say it but this game has sloppy defense and merely adequate offense. The computer cheats and scores from bad angles. If you come in alone you rarely score. I say that it's an average sports game.
