5.0 out of 5 stars NHL 2005 - Nintendo Gamecube, December 23, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NHL 2005 (Video Game)
From 1996 to 2001 I purchased every EA Sports hockey title to come out for PC. After 2001, however, I felt as if EA Sports was starting to slack off. Yes the graphics imrpoved yearly, but the new hockey games just didn't seem to be changing enough to purchase them in yearly incrememnts. Well, since then I have purchased a Gamecube, and I simply went crazy at the site of NHL 2005. With all new features the game is simply phenomenal! Most notibly are the Dynasty Mode where you take the place as the General Manager of a team and lead them through a season, the Minor Country leagues spanning from Sweden to Russia and beyond, EA Sports Free 4 All featuring tons of new multiplayer games to play wtih your friends, and World Cup of Hockey where you can lead your home country to victory! All of these new additions are enough to make you want to buy the game, but I still haven't mentioned the added features in gameplay. In every previous game there have been automated deeks that you press a button to perform, but now you can use the c-stick to take full control of your player's stick. This opens up thousands of possibilities in creating your own awesome moves. I have one callled the Dan-Double-Deek that is very hard to do just right, but has never failed to score. Also, to counter this new offense force, without the puck the c-stick becomes your bruise control. depending on how fast you lunge the stick at your opponent, you can do anything from a simple poke-ckeck to a rumbling body check that will send the opponent through the glass! The last thing I want to mention is a new innovation in hockey gaming callled Open Ice Support. While carrying the puck, you can switch from the puck bearer to an open teammate, leaving the computer with the responsibility of handling the black biscuit. Then you can skate to open ice and press the pass button. The computer will pass you the puck! This is a great way to set up quick one-timer plays, and a great way to escape your defensive zone with an odd-man rush or breakaway!

THE BOTTOM LINE: This is an unbalievable hockey game that will never get old, and will supply hours of fun, for you alone, or you and three other people.

Hey, the NHL is on lockout, so play this game. Better than reading the news. Actually, it's one of the best games ever.

I normally don't bother to review games, but this one is awesome! I recently unpacked the old Gamecube and was looking for the best hockey title, and I believe I've found it. Not having an xbox or ps3, this is about the closest you can get to a fun, realistic hockey game.

The World Cup feature is amazing; there's nothing like playing at home as the Americans and hearing: "USA! USA!"

Definitely pick this up if you're looking for a gamecube hockey title, it's well worth the 7 or 8 bucks you'll drop on a used copy (including shipping).

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for NHL Fans; Not for Others; Recommend with Reservations, August 28, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NHL 2005 (Video Game)
Great Aspects:

If you enjoy watching NHL hockey and also enjoy the EA NHL series, then this game will provide countless hours of fun. The controls and variety of in-game moves is the best ever in the NHL series. AI is also at its best in this game. Graphics are pretty good and the music is okay (depending on your music preference). The color commentary is some of the best in recent years (having replaced Don Taylor with Craig Simpson). Dynasty (franchise) mode is very engaging and the rewards system (for your franchise) will keep you playing and playing. Salaries are within reason (they won't skyrocket like they did in NHL 2004 after three seasons) and salary negotiations actually appear to have some logic to them.

Downside:

For casual sports video game fans, this game isn't going to entertain you for more than three hours; go get Madden if you haven't already. There are a few minor bugs in NHL 2005 (it is very difficult to name certain players captain, for no apparent reason, and there are still "soft" goals once you learn what you're doing). EA hockey technology is always at least one year behind Madden technology (for franchise options and management).

Summary:

Any NHL fan will enjoy this game for quite a long time. Other people probably won't like it too much.
Recommmend with Reservations.

I heard this game is cool. I liked NHL 2004, so this should be good, maybe even better than NHL 2004
