4.0 out of 5 stars The Game for SIM Hockey Lovers December 14, 2005
By Nickels
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
NHL 2k6 is the latest installment of the game that dethroned the EA NHL series 3 years ago. While the presentation could still use some work, gameplay is where 2k6 shines. EA has never come close to replicating the sport of hockey like the 2k series.

This years greatest new feature is on-the-fly coaching. With the press of a button your teammates will do whatever you want them to do from clearing the net to helping you attack the puck carrier. On offense they will attempt to screen the goalie, crash the net, or a few other things depending on the direction you push the d-pad. Another new feature is the defensive stick sweep and also a move where the defenseman drops down and lays his stick on the ice to block passing lanes. With sliders for everything under the sun, this game can be customized to any skill level or speed that you desire.

For those with a network adapter this game is a must. The online leagues are simply amazing. You can schedule games online and the site keeps track of all of the teams scores and statistics. This is a great feature for the hard core hockey gamer.

My biggest con for this game are the framerate stutters that happen every so often during the game. The presentation and graphics are a low point again for the series, but they are good enough to ignore them. There are many bugs (glitches) in this game, but none of them are gamebreakers. There is also a new wraparound move that scores a little too easily, but the player can simply avoid using this move. Overall this game is far from perfect, but once again it is the best hockey game available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent follow up to ESPN NHL 2K5 September 19, 2005
By Mike

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Without the names "ESPN" or "Sega" on the box, one might believe that this game may not be as worthwhile as the previous efforts displayed by the 2K Franchise. However, the game got a facelift, many of the desirable features from 2K5 have returned, and the end result is a better tailored game for a mere $20!

There was a lot of features that I thought were groovy about this game. I enjoy the new Pro Controls, which allow an offensive player to determine which person he's going to pass to by pressing the corresponding button. I also enjoy the goalie controls now, as they're more in depth and interesting to use. The game features new equipment from Reebok, and the custom player options are still very diverse. With the new Enforcer option for players, you can use your team's toughguy(s) to take care of business (thought you should have the fighting turned up if you want to see some fisticuffs). As always, the gameplay still reigns supreme.

Though there really isn't anything wrong with this game, you will have to spend some time getting the rosters readjusted thanks to the onslaught of movements and retirements that the lockout brang (though Claude Lemieux, who hasn't played since the 2002-2003 season in North America is still listed as an available free agent.) Also, the detail of the game isn't as meticulous as it's EA rival. I also found the soundtrack a little bland as well.

All and all, I give the game a big thumbs up and I recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing hockey game at an unbelieveable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars This year's best NHL game October 7, 2005
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
There may be no ESPN or Sega logo on the front package of NHL 2K6, but make no mistake, this is still of the same quality fans have come to expect with the last installments of the NHL 2K series. First of all, there aren't many differences between 2K6 and last year's superb ESPN NHL 2K5 besides some new fixtures in the game's presentation and the new rules implemented into the NHL. The rosters, which underwent a major makeover this past summer, remain the same as they did before the lockout happened, but nevertheless, NHL 2K6 is still the best of this year's NHL video games. The new Pro Control passing system is a nice feature, even though the gameplay can be a bit chaotic at times, but despite that, the gameplay is still superb. The rest of the controls are pretty tight, and the graphics still look good. Oh yeah, the 20 dollar price tag isn't a bad touch either, compared to EA's NHL 2006. However, if you own ESPN NHL 2K5, you can still alter the rules (no two-line pass calls, changing the overtime option to a shootout) and the rosters to the current NHL status, so if you already own that game, NHL 2K6 isn't worth picking up. It's a superb game however, and if you're an NHL fan and you missed out on 2K5 and you're looking for a better (and cheaper) alternative to EA's title, look no further.

1.0 out of 5 stars Glitches ruined an awesome game May 31, 2006
By S. Kish
Platform for Display:PlayStation2
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Tjhis game gets a 5 star rating for fun, but fails overall for reasons listed below.

Initially I thought NHL 2K6 was a great hockey game. Very authentic gameplay that allowed me to learn a lot about the game of hockey. I played a season with my favorite team in the Rookie setting and was doing awesome. For some reason though, at around Games 35-37 the game started glitching whenever I tried to save my season progress. I thought maybe I didn't have enough memory space, so I purchased a new memory card for $20. The glitch went away for the next few games, but then came back. Maybe it was coincidence, but if I lost the game, the Save Season mode worked fine, but if I won the game, the glitch would occur and the entire game would freeze. I would then have no choice but to restart the system and play the game again. If I then lost the game I had just won, it would save perfectly fine. I am not kidding on this. It was like it wouldn't let me win anymore.

I've even had trouble trying to access two player mode and still haven't gotten that to work. Plus, this game takes up a huge amount of memory when you play it in season mode. I was forced to delete old data and then purchase a new memory card just to keep playing the season. I got so frustrated with this game that I finally took it out of the PS2 and broke the disk in half, smashed the box and tossed 'er in the old garbage can. I wasted a lot of time and a sizeable chunk of money (including the memory card) on this game. It started out so promising, but ended up a disaster. Maybe I bought a defective game - who knows? But why would it work fine for countless hours and then just freeze up? I even cleaned the lens on my PS2, but still encountered the problem. Hopefully you have better luck if you decide to purchase this game.
