Great game!, June 30, 2000
This review is from: NHL 99 (CD-ROM)
I agree with Zach Burgman! I have NHL 2000, and it's good, but I seem to like NHL 99 better. Why? Well, first of all, the loading times. In 99 you set up your controller, click start, wait three seconds and play, but in 2000 it takes almost 5 minutes to load a normal exhibition game. Second of all is the system requirements. As with many EA Sports games, NHL 99 does NOT require a 3D card. The software does a great job with graphics and is almost as smooth as a 3D card. this is a great plus in the world of computer games. Anyways, if you don't have the most high-end computer there is, I recommend buying NHL 99.

Amazing that a '98 game can still hold up to a '00 game!, April 16, 2002
This review is from: NHL 99 (CD-ROM)
This has been a great and overall stable PC Hockey game. I can't remember the first time I played it (since this review was writen April 16th 2001!). I felt it was my duty to review it, however, by todays standards, I doubt if you'll be able to find a copy. The graphics are funny, but pardonable by 1998 standards, the checking is outragous, the amount of shots on goals is way too much, but the one denominator that makes this games gameplay superior in my opinion is the strength of the goalie! True, you can belt the goalie from every angle 50 times and not score a goal, unrealistic, but its the only thing that saves this game from falling into the catagory that NHL 2001 fell into. EA Sports decided that the goalie was too hard to beat in NHL 99 so they lowered the skill of the goalies and raised that of the offensive players in titles such as NHL 2001 and 2002. This created a large lopside and now we have another problem (with todays EA Sports hockey games). Too many goals! Yup, I still play my NHL 99 game alot. Its great! True, the shots to goal ratio is 70-40 some games, but thats really the only problem. After buying NHL 2001, I've gone back to playing NHL 99 several times because, in many ways, its more fun to play. Enough said, thank you for reading my review. Iceman

great!, July 19, 2006
This review is from: NHL 99 (CD-ROM)
I bought this game in 1999 and still play it. For me it's one of the best addictive sport games ever. I play this one the most just like other classic games like Mario Bros, Lemmings & Donkey kong. NHL '99 is the best version of the whole series because it seems to find a perfect balance between graphics, sound & gameplay. The older versions where not great graphically and the newer ones lack the great gameplay of this version. To me a good game is about great gameplay, exciting sounds & how addictive it is. This game has it all. It's almost like i'm looking at a real hockey game. The checks are great so are the details. You can see the ice scratches, boarding moving etc. Only complains are you get to play the same seasons everytime (the games are the same) and the rookie & pro season might be a bit too easy once you get a hang of it. Also the commentators get a bit annoying after like hearing them for a thousand times! But I still play this game very often.
