Product Description

GameSpot Review
While NHL 98 was great, NHL 99 is everything that last year's title should have been. Overall, this year's NHL title is a refinement of last year's game with new features, improved AI, better graphics, and stronger gameplay. But the changes and additions are more than enough reason to pick it up.

One of the biggest improvements over last year's NHL title is the control. The Dual Shock analog support really gives you the feel of gliding down the ice. In addition, now when you collide with a player on the ice or smash into the glass, the controller vibrates. You can still use the digital pad of course, but the smooth nature of the analog controller really does lend itself perfectly to skating.

Graphically, NHL 99 isn't leaps and bounds better, but it is a little cleaner. The frame rate is still pretty bad, but it doesn't hinder the game too much. EA wanted the animation of the players on the ice to be as true to life as possible, so it went and got real NHL players to provide the motion for the skating and goalie animations in the game. The result is a smoother, more accurate look to the players' movements than has been seen previously.

The play-by-play calls and commentary from NHL broadcasters Daryl Reaugh and Jim Hughson really add some flavor to the game, as does the stadium announcer, who calls out over the PA every once in a while to tell you how tasty the food is at the snack bar. The best one we've heard thus far went something like, "Would the person that left the brown paper bag next to the concession stand filled with nonsequential one hundred dollar bills, a ski mask, and a gun please come to the security office."

AI has always been one of the key points of the NHL series, and this year is no exception. The computer players are always working, either for a shot opportunity or just for an opportunity to knock you into the stands.

Above all, NHL 99 is a better version of last year's game. It may still be a bit sluggish on the frame rate side, but if you're a fan of previous NHL titles, you won't be disappointed. --Ryan Mac Donald

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, November 22, 1999

NHL 99 is undoubtedly the best hockey game out there. I purchased NHL 2000 thinking that EA Sports could only improve on the great game they had in 1999. Boy was I wrong. I also purchased NHL Championship 2000, thinking that someone might be able to duplicate and improve on the ever so popular NHL 99. I sold both of those two games within a week. I still have NHL 99 and play it religiously. Highly recommended game. A must for any Playstation owner, even if not a hockey.

5.0 out of 5 stars The newer versions just don't compare to this., November 5, 2000
When I first played this game, I was completely astonished. The gameplay is excellent, without any doubt. One round and I was having a grand time.

The graphics may not be the best, but they still do okay for the Playstation.

Everything is very real. All the penalties, checks, and very interesting fights all included. Even Game Misconduct penalties!

And sometimes older versions are better than the new ones. When I played NHL 2000, it just didn't compare. And NHL 99 for the Nintendo 64 was just as bad. They both have better graphics, but the gameplay just didn't match up. NHL 99 includes training drills to hone your skills with a wide selection of different drills available. And with a friend makes things even better. Partners or opponents.

I bought NHL 99 about a year ago and I'm still playing it like I just bought. It would make a great gift for any hockey fan at an an amazing price and also has a LOT of replay value. Would definitely be worth buying (Without ANY doubt at all)!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not good either, March 11, 2001
By Matt Muzzy (Lincoln Park , MI USA) - See all my reviews
This game is alright if you like terrible graphics and high scoring on every mode. I'll start with terrible graphics first. On any camera angle the game play stinks. On "Ice" mode it is worse than terrible and horrible combined. Anything else just doesn't click in with the NHL. Hi scoring: On Pro mode (supposed to be hard to score on)I exploded through the season with a 68-14 record (I turned off ties) with the Detroit Red Wings scoring 11 or more goals in 91% of the games.

Plus when I played as NYR today and Gretzky took the draw, the puck went to Samuelson and he passed right back up to the Great One and Gretz scored a breakaway goal 03 seconds into the game!! Well, that's high scoring. In season mode I was Detroit,(see 68-14 record season on top.) and I created Manny Legace, Yuri Butsayev and a few others. Yuri Butsayev scored 101 goals on the year and took the Rocket Richard trophy. Not 10, not 11, not 1 goal but yes 101 (one hundred and one)!! How can you even score 90 on season mode??? A couple other things I am mad about, but I don't want to get into a long season story again so that's all. (P.S I am actually rating this 2.5 not a full 3.)
