GameSpot Review

The people over at Fox interactive know hockey, and it shows in how well NHL Championship 2000 looks, plays, and feels. The physics are so realistic that a lot of video-game hockey fans may actually be turned off by it. NHL Championship 2000's gameplay is more realistic than that of any hockey game out there, which can be viewed as good or bad, depending on your tastes. If you're a fan of the fast-paced, responsive control of Electronic Arts' NHL 2000, you may find the realistic momentum-based physics of NHL 2000 to be unresponsive. But if you're a purist of the sport, and you realize that players can't really start, stop, and turn instantly, you might be able to appreciate the more true-to-life physics of NHL Championship 2000. The game's options and features are in tune with the game's true-to-life gameplay. NHL Championship 2000 includes all the players and teams from the NHL, as well as 18 international teams. The game has several modes of play, including exhibition, season, playoffs, championship, and a world tournament. Of course, all of the arenas and little extras - like different team jerseys - are in the game, along with a create-a-player mode. It should be noted that one feature NHL Championship 2000 doesn't skimp on is statistical tracking. Compared with NHL 2000 or Face Off 2000, NHL Championship 2000 has several more stat categories. The AI is probably the best of any of the hockey games on the PlayStation, but that's not to say it's flawless. The three levels of difficulty are dramatically different, letting you really set the game to match your skills. Whatever setting you pick will seem refreshing - actually, tiring is more like it, since every computer player on the ice is constantly working you to get the puck when you have it, or setting up for a shot when it has possession of the puck. When you bump the difficulty setting up, the whole game gets meaner and more aggressive. It also plays much smarter. The management controls for team strategy are not only in-depth, but it is also designed well enough to let you easily select what type of game plan you want to run. There are a few problems that are somewhat annoying, but they don't really take away from the game. For instance, the computer gets called for offsides more than it really should. You may want to disable the offsides rule to remedy this. The graphics in NHL Championship 2000 are just about on par with everything else on the market. The animations of the players gliding down the ice, shooting, fighting, and making saves are quite good. The players are fairly detailed, and all the team logos and jerseys look authentic. The walls around the rink are adorned with advertisements, and the glass will break if you get slammed, or if you slam somebody into it hard enough. You can view all the action on the ice from six camera angles, all of which are quite good. In addition, you can zoom in and out from each angle to accommodate your taste. The play-by-play and pregame announcing by Fox Sports announcers John Davidson and Kenny Albert is really great. The rest of the sound gets the job done, though the drone of the crowd sounds weak in comparison with the noise of the crowd in other games. In the end, whether NHL Championship 2000 is the game for you depends on whether or not you're looking for a realistic hockey simulation. EA's faster, more responsive NHL 2000 is the obvious choice if you're looking for a faster, more hectic hockey game.--Ryan Mac Donald--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Game for those who know and love REAL hockey, November 12, 1999

NHL Championship 2000 is the latest hockey game from part of the Radical staff that brought us the underated Powerplay Hockey for the Saturn. Let me tell you, these guys know how to make a REAL hockey game. What do I mean? First off, the AI is top-notch. The computer reacts to situations realistically-defenders cover for each other, offensive players will crash the net, deflect shots, the defenseman will deliver punishing checks to guys camped out in the slot... In fact, it is sometimes hard to get a shot off. Also, the player animations are great, especially the goalies. The game features most of the glitz of a Fox broadcast, including the fox-trac puck (which isn't annoying like it is in real life!) and the rosters are very up-to-date, only taking minor tweaking to get them up to speed. And speaking of speed-every review I've read on this game calls it sluggish, slow... That is wrong! The speed of the game reflects the actual speed of hockey. Guys like Kariya, Bure and Salanne are fast. Guys like Kevin Hatcher are slower. This is not a game where anyone on your team can make an end-to-end lightning fast rush. You're going to have to work for your goals in this game! The one thing that upset me was the total avoidance of the new overtime rules. It would have been nice to see some 4-on-4 in OT! Overall, this is a game for Hockey enthusiasts that have been wading through arcade hockey for years and praying for a more acurate simulation of the game they love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy NHL Championship 2000 if NHL FaceOff 2000 is sold out., December 8, 1999

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

A feature I like is the passing arrow. When a specific player has the puck...there are arrows pointing the that player's nearest teammate from which to pass to. This is a very good feature. The puck is highlighted to make following the puck easier and also the slap shots and wrist shots leave a red and blue trail, respectively. This is a nice feature.

I must say...I'm disappointed with the graphics. The graphics are grainy and the details of the players, uniforms and arenas are severely lacking. The hockey arenas are just plain lacking in color. Everything thing has a grayish tint.

Also, the camera angles are not very pleasing. There are about 5 angles from which to play NHL Championship 2000 ...but all the various angles still leave you wanting something just a little bit more satisfying. Last, but certainly not least, the load time to access any of the features is EXTREMELY slow. This can be quite irritating if you're trying to get in a quick game.

I've since had an opportunity to sample 989's NHL FaceOff 2000 and wish I had chosen that vendor. The graphics and playability are much crisper and cleaner...with more attention paid to the finer details, e.g. the reflection of the arena lights shining off the ice.

I wasn't expecting much from this newcomer, but I was pleasently surprised. The graphics are best available for the Playstation and the gameplay will please true hockey fans. I like how the the game features passing arrows to help locate teammates.
