synopsis
The Chicago Blackhawks are an Original Six club with rich history and tradition. Legends of the game Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Glenn Hall are synonymous with the Blackhawks logo which is one of the most recognizable in all of professional sports. Through the years, the Blackhawks have raised legends to the rafters and delighted fans with amazing individual efforts by Denis Savard, Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte, Patrick Kane, and Jonathan Toews. There have been unforgettable moments in the old Chicago Stadium from their last Stanley Cup championship against the Montreal Canadiens, to the unforgettable national anthem which rocked the 1991 all-star game, to the closing moments of what was called the The Madhouse On Madison - all of which enriched the history of the sport of hockey. Now, for the first time, a selection of Chicago Blackhawks greatest players' finest moments is assembled in this 6-disc collector's edition box set. Disc 1. Jeremy Roenick - Regular Season vs. Winnipeg Jets 2/24/94 Disc 2. Tony Amonte - Game 3 Conference Quarter - Final vs. Toronto Maple Leafs 4/23/94 Disc 3. Denis Savard - Game 4 Conference Final vs. Detroit Red Wings 6/8/95 Disc 4. Jonathan Toews - Game 2 Conference Quarter-Final vs. Calgary Flames 4/18/09 Disc 5. Patrick Kane - Game 6 Conference Semi-Final vs. Vancouver Canucks 5/11/09 Disc 6. Chicago Blackhawks Memorable Moments: - 1961 Stanley Cup championship - Final 14 minutes of the third period in Game 6 Stanley Cup Final at Detroit Red Wings 4/16/61 - Bobby Hull retirement ceremony 12/18/83 - Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito retirement ceremony 11/20/88 - 1991 All-Star game opening 1/19/91 - Final period of last game at Chicago Stadium and closing ceremony 4/14/94 - Denis Savard retirement ceremony 3/19/98 - Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson retirement ceremony 11/10/08 - Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita Night 3/7/08 Would really have liked to seen some more of the 60's/70's Hawks with Mikita and the BH, alas no complete games from the era. Hey NHL--how about including championship season highlight films with your dvds like the NFL and NBA do with their Team video collections?

I've been waiting for the Blackhawks to get the DVD treatment for a few years now. Having seen the Red Wings (Booo!), Rangers, Islanders, Oilers, Flames, and etc. get their own release, I knew that it was a matter of time before the Hawks would get theirs. I'm a 30 year old Blackhawks fan, and I've been a fan of the team for as long as I can remember, even during the 97-07 tough times. My dad was a fan, and it was just sort of handed down.
On to the review. If you're a fan of the teams of the 90's, you'll love this set. Ed Belfour was/is my favorite player of all time, so I've been loving this set so far. I'll detail each of the 6 discs as best as I can. Disc 1 of the 6 disc set is the February 24, 1994 home game vs Winnipeg. The whole game is shown in it's entirety, and the disc is titled "Jeremy Roenick" because it highlights the monster of a game that he had that night. When you put the disc in, you're given the option of watching any of the three periods, but if you start at "Period One", it will play through the game. I'd forgotten how much I hated Tie Domi until I watched this game again. Seeing him pummel a defenseless Steve Smith into injury really reminds me of the punk Domi was back then. Goalie matchup was Belfour vs Essensa. This is the TSN broadcast of the game, and audio/video quality is A+ Disc 2 - This disc is titled "Tony Amonte" and contains the full CBC broadcast of the 1994 playoff game 3 versus Toronto. The last series the Chicago Stadium saw, and it was a good one, albeit a tough one to think about even to this day. Bob Cole and Harry Neale call the game for CBC, and it's still funny to watch these old games and see all of the hooking and physical play. It really was a great time to be an NHL fan back then! This was a great game, but that series is still hard to talk about. You'll be seeing two of the best goaltenders of the era in this game: Potvin vs Belfour. Disc 3 - "Denis Savard Disc". This is the full broadcast of the 1995 Conference Finals game 4 between the Hawks and Detroit (S***S!) This is the playoffs that began a decade-plus of Detroit dominance, but it's easy to forget just how close this series was, despite only lasting 5 games. Three of the 5 games went to at least one overtime, and some might argue that this series against the Hawks is what led to Detroit being upset by New Jersey in the final. The Hawks were so physical with the softer Detroit team that they had no legs left when it came time to play the equally physical Devils. In this game, you'll see Denis Savard dominate as the Hawks unleash on Detroit. Disc 4 - "Jonathan Toews Disc". Disc 4 is the full broadcast of Game 2 of the 2009 Western Conference Quarter-Final vs Calgary. I won't elaborate on this one because it's so recent...everyone remembers that series. Disc 5 - "Patrick Kane Disc". Disc 5 is the full broadcast of Game 6 of the 09 Western Conference Semi-Final vs Vancouver. One can never see Kane lighting up that arrogant overrated Luongo enough! Disc 6 - Quite possibly the best disc in the set. This one is called "Chicago Blackhawks Memorable Moments" and includes the following: -Final 14 minutes of the 1961 Stanley Cup Final vs Detroit with post-game interviews. - Bobby Hull Retirement Ceremony from 1983 - Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito number-retirement ceremony from 1988 -1991 All-Star Game from Chicago Stadium starting lineups and anthems - Closing ceremony of the Chicago Stadium following game 6 of the 1994 playoff vs Toronto - Denis Savard number retirement ceremony from 1998 - Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita night from 2008 - Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson's #3 raised to the rafters in 2008 All in all, I can agree with the sentiments that there should have been more pre-90's content. That said, there's plenty of good times here for Hawks fans to remember. I grew up with the teams from the 80's, 90's, early 2000's on up to today, and I'm happy with the game selection. Would have been nice to see some full games from the 60's and 70's, though. Of course there's nothing from the Thibault-era, but a lot of Hawks "fans" had curiously abandoned ship during those dark times. Overall, this is a 5-star set, and for the price it can't be beat. I definitely recommend this set for Hawks fans of all ages...fans like me will love going back and seeing guys like Belfour, Gary Suter, Steve Smith, Dirk Graham, Tony Amonte, Christian Ruuttu, Jeremy Roenick and etc. Younger fans will enjoy the chance to see just how differently the game was played back then (for better or worse) and will gain an appreciation for the players that they hear so much about but likely never had the chance to see.

no glenn hall. no tony esposito. just a bunch of games with very limited history of a GREAT franchise. not on my to own list, even though i have waited months for its release. picture a boston bruins set with no BOBBY ORR games and you have a idea what this set is worth.
