GameSpot Review

NHL 99 continues a series of great hockey games that EA originally programmed for the Genesis. The original NHL Hockey was such a good game, that it actually turned me into a hockey fan. How has the series held up over the years? Pretty well. There have been a few versions that have left out the casual sports gamer, taking a more complex route. NHL 99 retains the outstanding gameplay of the original 16-bit games, but gives you lots of options, allowing you make the game as simple or as complex as you want.

For starters, you can disable just about all the rules, including icing, two-line passes, offsides, and those pesky interference calls. Other options include player trading, which also includes the ability to make your own players. Gameplay modes include all the modes we've come to expect from modern-day sports titles. Exhibition games allow you to dive right in and play a meaningless game, while season mode and championship mode allow you to give your games a little more meaning. There is also a shootout mode, which allows you to practice your breakaways in a penalty shot competition.

The gameplay is extremely simple to learn, though there are advanced options that you can learn, also. At its most simplistic, NHL 99 requires the use of only three buttons. However, decide to control your own goalie, call some offensive or defensive plays, or change lines, and you'll find that the game can get really complex. Still, the control is really great. The analog controller really allows for precision skating. The AI in the game (based on last year's PlayStation version) is reasonably good and scales pretty well to fit the difficulty setting.

The graphics in NHL 99 work really well. The skating and checking animations are all pretty nice, and the game runs at a nice, smooth frame rate. The sound, unfortunately, doesn't come off as well. Sure, the actual sounds of hockey are pretty good, but the announcer really kills it. It seems like he only says about eight different things. Even though it was recorded by NHL analyst, Bill Clement, it still sounds like EA called in one of the night janitors at the eleventh hour to record things like "freight train...woo wooooo!"

NHL 99 provides a great gameplay experience for both fans and nonfans of the sport. It is simple enough for anyone to pick up and play, yet there's enough here to keep you interested for a long time. With this game on the market, you can finally pack up your Genesis for good. --Jeff Gerstmann

5.0 out of 5 stars The #1 Ice hockey games hits Nintendo, July 2, 2000
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NHL'99 (Game Cartridge)
As a proud owner of the game NHL,99 I'd have to say its the best Ice Hockey game of its kind. In games i like to look for options, options, options and this game has em. You can chose from a range of tornaments ranging from a round robin to The Stanley cup.

Getting started this game has a unique aspect to it. There is a rookie game option where there are minimal rules and the computer basically stinks. With this option you get the hang of the game and the buttons. Once you think your to good for this option go to exhibition where you can decide who you and your oponent is. NHL,99 has all the NHL teams as well as a couple of International teams like Canada, USA and the Olympic Champions Czech Republic.

NHL,99 is a multiplayer game with 1-4 players. So you can nail up to 3 of your friends on the ice. NHL,99 has play commentry by real NHL commentator Bill Clemet who's sayings range from "he drills that one home, SCOOOORES and "Good night folks its all over!". And this games takes rumble pak so you can feel those hits! This game has brilliant sound the crowd noise is incredible with cheering and booing. and a couple of extras. Like a real NHL game it has catchy short tunes between each whistle and the crowd likes to assist the beat sometimes with a little banging of the boards.

There is also the create player option where you can write his name, last name, number, position, and even perferred shot aswell as a couple more aspects. along with this you can chose where he is skillful but chose wisely as there is only limited skill, unlike other stupid games where you have unlimited skill, i mean come on get real! And if you think you good enough try aiming your slap shot a little to the left of the net and try and brake the boards i've done it twice its pretty hard!

I recommend this game to anyone that likes a fast flowing hard hitting sports game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best hockey game for the N64 EVER!, May 21, 2000

This is one of the best N64 Sports games that EA Sports has ever done. I must admit that I adjust the rosters once trades/signings happen thanks to the GM options. The Stanley Cup celebration at the end of the Finals is pretty sweet too. The only problem is that Bill Clement guy. They could have, at least, gotten his comrade Gary Thorne and even Mike Emrick to take that spot. But, this game is excellent other than that point.
