The speaker is quite plain to look at, but this only makes it all the more stunning when you fire it up and hear its gloriously natural midrange and mellow but perfectly detailed high frequencies. And we have no trouble recommending this as a bookshelf speaker for close quarters--say, a bedroom or dorm room, where placement near a wall will emphasize whatever bass is there. Additionally, a subwoofer will do a great deal to fill in the low end.
Timbrally, apart from the drop-off in the low end, this speaker is spot on. Voices, acoustic instruments, electric guitars, drums, synthesizers--you name it, this speaker does it justice, letting you lose yourself in a musical presentation for hours on end without strain or fatigue (provided you're not playing them too loudly, of course. This is a definite temptation). We were simply astounded at how NHT's SuperZero played us not so much the sound as the music, the true test of any speaker's mettle.
The SuperZero's speaker terminals are rugged five-way binding posts, and the backside comes with two threaded holes for wall mounting. Wall placement, whether the SuperZero is on the wall or merely near it, will beef up the bass a bit, but we found that it sounded the most natural with 2 or 3 feet of space on all sides (stands are not included). --Michael Mikesell

True audiophile quality which would make Bose owners cry!,
By Matt (Plano, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NHT SuperZero Bookshelf Speaker (Single) (Electronics)
These speakers are amazing! They are tiny, yet produce the hugemids and highs, along with an expansinve sound stage that competeswell with other speakers. Yes, they are virtually devoid of bass responce, the sealed design shows that NAD was commited to accuracy and imaging and wouldn't sacrifice them for a bit of boom. If you team these with the SW1P subwoofer, they earn a Stereophile Class C reccomended component. If you don't want to add a sub, get the SW2P, or even one of the quality other subs, (like the Design Accoustics one) and you will have full range musical glory. These speakers would also be ideal alone for use in a dorm, or as an "upgrade" or replacement speaker for popular shelf systems. To get better sound than a set of super zeroes teamed with a SW1P or SW2P, you would have to spend big bucks on speakers from B&W, Vandersteen, or Thiel, and the law of diminishing returns WOULD be applicable..

NHT only honors the 5 year warranty on these speakers if purchased through an authorized dealer. Amazon.com is NOT authorized. The only .com authorized to sell these with a warranty is Crutchfield.comJust a warning to all of you out there.

NHT SuperZero's, living up to the hype?,
By "fateswarning" (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I have been reading the hype about the Super Zero's for years. Now that I finally own a pair I must say they do deliver solid performance. The highs are crystal clear with out being harsh. This makes them well suited for home theater usage as well as for listening to music. (I boost the treble slightly for home theater.) The mids are warm and natural. The bass response leaves something to be desired but they don't claim to produce killer bass. They are rated from 85Hz to 25kHz. Pairing them with a sub-woofer helps round out their performance. They handle the wattage (100 w) from my Harmon Kardon 210 quite well. The high gloss finish gives them an attractive appearance. They come with a threaded socket for wall bracket mounting. These speakers can also be used as rear satellites, coupled with the super twos for the fronts. Do these speakers live up to all the hype? Maybe not, but they are a great choice if you are tight budget.
