When compared to the more recent seasons of Next Iron Chef (NIC), this season looks done on a shoestring - it probably was. However, holding the competition in small kitchens at culinary institutes seems to add some grit and pressure on the chefs that makes the program. As with later seasons, this show does take the chefs overseas in the later episodes (Germany and France).

Many of the chefs who are competing in Season 1 are known names now though in 2007, probably not so much. Chefs vying to be the Next Iron Chef are:
John Besh
Chris Cosentino
Jill Davie
Morou Ouattara
Aarón Sanchez
Michael Symon
Traci Des Jardins
Gavin Kaysen,

Alton Brown is still his hilarious but serious self. Judges for the preliminary rounds are decent: food writer Michael Ruhlman, restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton, and restaurateur Donatella Arpaia.

But the interactions between the chefs and the lengths some will go to in which to win give Series 1 a grit that the later seasons don't have. Not that later winners don't want it as bad as these early contestants but it shows through much more here.

At $9.99 for the season is a little pricey for 6 episodes - was really hoping to find them on Prime, Netflix or Hulu. But $10 is cheaper for an afternoon of entertainment for the family than taking everyone to the movies.

I knew who was going to win but watching the cooking competition was still enjoyable. I will be buying and watching the following seasons.

Great first season. I had evidently missed this the first time and enjoyed catching up with how Michael became an Iron Chef. In general, I think the challenges on this season were more appropriate to the ultimate goal. Using a particular trait or desired characteristic was fun.
