Editorial Reviews

It took nearly nine years of false leads, blind alleys and wrong turns until the labyrinths led to one man, Aldrich Ames. He was finally arrested in February 1994 for one of the worst acts of treason in American history.

In this program "Nightline" is given background on Ames by Pete Earley, a former reporter for the Washington Post. Earley met alone with Ames, without the CIA present on 17 occasions at the jail in Alexandria, Virginia shortly after his arrest. How? Someone simply forget to inform jail authorities that it wasn't permitted.

"Nightline" also speaks with Ames' wife Rosario and two of the men Ames exposed and nearly got killed - a Soviet diplomat working for the CIA (Sergey Fedorenko) and and a top KGB official who was helping the west (Colonel Oleg Gordievsky).
