Great Help!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The NIV Application Commentary: Ephesians (Hardcover)
As a minister, I decided to preach through the book of Ephesians. Because I tend to preach with a more exegetical style, I was very interested in having a commentary that examined the history of the text and gave practical use for today. This commentary accomplished all of this and more. Yes, there were times when I felt that Snodgrass's application was perhaps not for what I was looking. However, the most significant part to me was exegetically handling the Word of God. I recommend this commentary to both lay people and ministers.

A Must for Ephesians,

Dr. Snodgrass turns sermon prep into a Spirit filled experience by offering profound thought and application of Ephesians to the modern life. Klyne takes Paul's call to "ground, shape and challenge the readers so they might live a life of faith" to the contemporary church through exegetical insights and profound application. This commentary is simply outstanding at numberous levels. It has impacted my spiritual walk and has been a powerful preaching/teaching tool.

I purchased this book a few years ago for a hermeneutics course I took at Colorado Christian University. Although a couple of the consulting editors of the NIV Application Commentary Series have some different understandings of Scripture than I do, I had absolutely no problems with Professor Snodgrass' exegesis. The book starts off with an introduction to the NIV Application Commentary Series, a general editor's preface, an author's preface, a general introduction to the Book of Ephesians and an annotated bibliography before providing 330 pages of rich text and commentary on what is one of the most influential documents ever written. A Scripture index and a subject index are provided in the back of the book. Every passage of Ephesians has the original meaning examined, the original context and the contemporary context bridged and the significance of the passage discussed in a way that engages life today. Snodgrass's book is 14 years old, but the contemporary significance is not outdated by any means. Meaning that is found in literal versions such as the ESV or NASB that is lost in the NIV is properly addressed. This book was a great help in writing a paper focused on Ephesians 2:1-10 and will continue to assist me in my studies of Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

Hugely helpful,
This review is from: Ephesians (The NIV Application Commentary) (Kindle Edition)
The NIV Application Commentries are among the best series of commentaries overall for digging into the text at a deep level while challenging us to consider the implications of the text for our day and age. And this particular commentary is the most helpful commentary on Ephesians I've ever read

I have read and studied all of Dr Snodgrass's great books after having been a student at North Park starting the same year Dr. Snodgrass started. All my New Testament classes from Greek to The Parables were and have been very helpful as I refer to my notes so very often. Now I have been blessed by the help his books have offer during the last 31 years. I can only offer great job to all the other reviews. Michael Smith

New site[...] aggregates user ratings, academic weight, series, and notes from the Denver Seminar Journal. It currently rates Klyne's Snodgrass' Ephesians commentary in the top three available. Denver (Craig L. Blomberg, et al) marks this one as the "Must Have" Evangelical commentary on Ephesians.
Seminary students who have had Professor Snodgrass (we call him Klyne), have a bit of an inside track that may be helpful. It's likely there isn't a more respected (and liked!) professor at North Park Theological Seminary (and far wider circles could easily be argued). He is precise, pastoral, theological, encyclopedic, genuine, careful, and insanely familiar with the text. |
