Book Description

June 13, 1983
The two most popular translations in one volume * KJV and NIV side by side for quick verse-for-verse comparison * Abridged NIV concordance * Abridged KJV concordance The NIV/KJV Parallel Bible lets you benefit from the rich nuances of meaning offered by different translations. It sets the two most popular translations side-by-side: the readability and accuracy of the New International Version and the time-honored tradition of the King James Version. Verses from the two versions are aligned on double-column pages for ease of study. Each translation offers insight on different facets of meaning in the text, giving you the benefit of the work of different groups of scholars to help you understand and interpret the Bible for yourself. A valuable resource for gaining insight into scriptural truths, the NIV/KJV Parallel Bible helps you compare translations at a glance. When you want to study the Bible in depth, comparing different Bible translations helps you discover the different shades of meaning in the text. The translation committees for each Bible version chose different ways of translating the original Scripture texts into English. By comparing them, you can get a more complete understanding of the intended meaning of the original writers. Abridged concordances for each translation help you find key words and verses. The balance of word-for-word and thought-for-thought translation of the NIV communicates the meaning more clearly. To modern readers, while the word-for-word translation of the KJV lets you see an English rendering of early Bible manuscripts. From the easy-to-understand modern language of the New International Version to the poetic majesty of the King James Version, the NIV/KJV Parallel Bible has two distinctive translations in clear, easy-to-read print. NIV/KJV Parallel Bible includes: * New International Version -- A beautiful, accurate, and clear translation, the New International Version (NIV) is today's most popular and most trusted English Bible translation. Since its release in 1973, the NIV has sold over 160 million copies. The goal of the NIV translation team was to produce a contemporary translation whose accuracy, clarity, and literary quality would make it ideal for public and private reading, teaching, preaching, memorizing, and liturgical use. Today the NIV is accepted by over 60 denominations---more than any other translation---and is supported by a library of reference resources unmatched by any other translation. * King James Version -- The classic King James Version (KJV), beloved by generations of Bible readers, was first published in England in 1611. Commissioned by King James I, it was the achievement of nearly fifty translators, who over four years revised the Bishop's Bible in the light of available Greek and Hebrew documents as well as other contemporary European translations. The result was the first Authorized Version, known as to Americans as the King James Version. Subsequent editions corrected early misprints, modernized some spellings, and standardized features such as punctuation and italicization. The most famous revisions include the Cambridge edition of 1762, the Oxford edition of 1769, and Dr. F.H.A. Scrivener's Cambridge Paragraph Bible of 1873. Zondervan uses the Scrivener edition for its KJV Bibles. The NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION is today's best-supported translation. For even greater understanding of your NIV Bible, look for NIV concordances, NIV dictionaries, and NIV commentaries. One Message. Two Ways of Translating It. The NIV/KJV Parallel Bible does more than combine the readability and accuracy of the best-selling New International Version (NIV) with the poetic beauty and dignity of the King James Version (KJV). 4.0 out of 5 stars No words of Christ in red & cheap binding..., July 28, 2004
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This bonded-leather parallel KJV-NIV Bible disappoints this reader by not showing Christ's words in red print. My parallel KJV-Amplified Bible does indeed have Christ's words highlighted in red type and is from the very same publisher! I naturally assumed that this KJV-NIV version would do likewise. On a more positive note, the large print is _easy_ on the eyes and the burgundy bonded-leather flexible cover is quite attractive. However, I'm returning this Bible and hope to eventually find a parallel KJV-NIV with the red letter feature.

Just another observation: It is sad that this and almost all Bibles (and most other books) published today no longer have _sewn bindings_ but mere glued-in pages. This makes the books relatively fragile (open it too wide or use it too much and the spine cracks) and greatly shortens their useful life. Some very expensive tomes are bound in this manner (ironically referred to as 'perfect binding' in the book industry).

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb Study Tool, August 22, 2004
By
David C. Leaumont "Dave" (Bossier City, LA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This Parallel Bible is very well done. The type is easy to read (non-Large Print version) and the passages are side by side. There is both a KJV and an NIV concordance in the back, which is very useful. I enjoy Parallel Bibles like this one because my preacher preaches from the KJV, but I like to read the NIV for clarification.

The reason I gave it 4 stars are these:

1) The verses are not synced up. Each chapter is started at the same place on a page, but the verses are not next to each other. For instance, the KJV may end the page with verse 29, but the NIV ends with verse 32. So, the parallel verse is actually on the next page. (Not a big deal, but it would have been better to have had them synced.)

2) There are no study notes or references to aid in study. The associated verses listed in the center of the page in many Bibles would have been useful. Also, study notes would have been great as well. This is a slim Bible, despite having 2 complete versions. It would have easily had NIV and KJV study notes at the end of each column. There is no parallel Bible that does this yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Bible, January 31, 2006
By
This is a good quality and impressive looking Bible, and one that I'm sure I will enjoy and use for years. I have received numerous compliments on it, and I highly recommend it. I do have two things, though, that I might point out. If you're looking for a red-letter Bible, this isn't. This is a minor thing to me, so I didn't mark it down because of this. Why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that I bought this Bible sight unseen, and since I'm 57, and plan to use it for quite awhile, I decided to get the large print edition. When I first opened it, my first reaction was: Oops! They sent me the standard print Bible; as the print is what I expected as a standard print edition...meaning, the print is about what you would see if you received a typed letter. I have also had this same comment from several people who have looked at it. But it does say in the front of the Bible that it is large print, and I do have another Bible that does have a little smaller print, so I guess my idea of large print is not the same as the publisher. Anyway, if your eyesight requires large print, you might wish to look at this Bible first before you buy. I know other publishers do have larger print.
