This is my favorite Bible. If you're just embarking on reading the Bible for the first time or are reading it for the hundredth time, I can't recommend it enough.

Back in the mid-90s when I first became a Christian, I stumbled across "The Quest Study Bible" in a Christian bookstore. I was drawn to it because it had all of the notes and stuff explained in the margins, rather than in small type as footnotes. It wasn't just a few notes--but full margins filled with the questions I was having as I read the Bible. It was wonderful--and yet, I was the only one I knew who had this great Bible. (Just found out that they sold over a million copies...guess I wasn't the only one. ;) Fast forward to today, and I still have it. It's underlined and has note written in it--but is still as wonderful as before. So, when I saw that there was a new edition coming out, I was so pleased. I've owned probably 10-15 Bibles since I bought my first Quest Study Bible--and none (not one) has come close to the Quest Study Bible in terms of knowledge one can get by simply reading it. I used it in a Bethel Bible course (an intensive Bible study) as well as during a semester at seminary. I cannot recommend this Bible enough.

The new edition is quite similar to the old one. The differences are the inclusion of 100 most frequently asked questions, as well as slightly different cover art, type font, etc. I wish they had an index to the questions, but I've yet to find one. Instead, one gets to discover them as one reads the Bible. It has great maps, a nice reading plan with checklists, and most importantly...the wonderful notes and helps in the margins!

Maybe I should have taken the reviews that talked about this to heart. I like NIV Bibles, and the question/answer feature on the Kindle version is nice, but I really wish that the book you're in would appear on each page. Also, I like using the highlighter feature that the Kindle has, but the problem with this Bible is when you highlight a passage and look at it later under "My Clippings", it doesn't list the book, only the verse numbers. Very frustrating!

So, if you just want a basic Bible and you don't care about noting verses to retrieve later, then this will probably suit your needs. Otherwise I would look elsewhere.. and if you find one like that, please comment on this review as I'd like to know!

This is a Bible designed for readers with lots and lots of questions. The Quest Study Bible is the product of a collaboration between Christianity Today and Zondervan and a series of improvements since its original conception in 1989. Focus groups were used to determine the most useful study Bible features to be included. More than 1,000 readers provided input into common questions about the scriptures that would be answered. Answers to questions come from respected Bible scholars, pastors and writers and have gone through a careful editorial review process to ensure accuracy.

Every page in the Quest Study Bible has a visually appealing light blue sidebar that contains information, maps, and answers to common questions about the scriptures on the page. There is a lot of information and answers to questions here. The sidebars also make the pages easier to read by narrowing the text columns and breaking up an otherwise full page of text. This feature alone cannot be emphasized enough.

Each book begins with a useful overview page which provides a summarized introduction, when the book was written, the author believed to have written it, a summary of events happening in the world at the time it was written, and key points to look for when reading the book.

What I really like about this Bible is that the answers to questions often consider various points of view instead of simply offering a single explanation. There are plenty of theological arguments that have been raging for centuries and it's encouraging to see that the authors of this study Bible have made a sincere effort to find balance and provide the best explanations available in a concise way. At the very least, the explanations provided make for a good starting point in the search for deeper answers.

I was excited to get a new study Bible, hoping for new insights into passages that I have trouble understanding or that I have unanswered questions. This study Bible has the NIV translation which is used in many churches and is clear and easy to understand. It provides maps, intros to each book, concordance, extra explanations of popular (and unpopular) passages. All thses things I have in my other study bibles. It also has along the sides of the biblical text, questions and answers. Some of these I found interesting while others were concerning - such as the question about whether the animals came to Noah or if he went out and collected them. This is not something I would have expected to see as part of a bible study. Rather, I would have expected an eplanation about why the story is included in the ancient texts, some background on other historical flood stories and what a flood story with almost total destruction of humanity means to Christians today. Needless to say, I was disappointed by this Q & A. Another Question (and answer) provided (in the creation stories) was regarding when dinosaurs were created and how there could be day and night before planets. I'm concerned these types of comments will cause new Christians to get mired into details of "stories" and miss the point of the creation stories themselves. However, in the study section of the same page, the authors DID state the importance of these stories.

A nice quality of this study bibile is found at the start of the book - a two week, six month and three year guided tour of the Bible. For someone new to Christianity, or someone who is a Christian and has never read the Bible, the two year and six month studies are a good start.
