Hey, I hope nobody's offended by a guy's reviewing a devotional Bible for women. This has, as the previous reviewer mentioned, a cover purposely made to attract women. And as Sunday pointed out, it is fine print. I do wear glasses and the print here challenges them.

However, the essence here lies in the devotions and their relation to the scriptures. Unlike some devotional Bibles, the devotions are directly tied in with the adjacent scriptures. The devotions are written by members of Proverbs 31 Ministries and one of the end features lists each author's devotions. We're also given each lady's blogs for our viewing.

Certain points are brought out in these devotions that can be missed by many of us. As an instance, the very first devotion points out that the first day of creation started with evening rather than day and the three verses listed at the end of the devotion relate evening with rest and compare the Genesis verse with the rest mentioned in the commandment to keep the Sabbath holy, the "rest in the shadow of the Almighty" referred to in the 91st Psalm, and a time of rest for the disciples mentioned in Mark 6.

Another example is the comparison of the man's leaving father and mother to be united with his wife to Ruth's companionship with mother-in-law Naomi, and to being part of the Christian family as exorted by Paul in Philippians 2:2 and Peter in I Peter 3:8.

And there's the citing of grace being shown in Adam and Eve's exile from the Garden of Eden compared with grace as spoken of by John in his gospel and Paul in Romans and Ephesians.

So this is a marvelous Bible for all women reading this and also would be a great gift for a mother, wife, or daughter.

Similar to a long line of new thematic Bibles published in the past decade, the NIV Real-Life Devotional Bible for Women (Insights for Everyday Life) (2012) was recently published by Zondervan and developed by Lysa TerKeurst, President of Proverbs 31 Ministries and her team. In her Forward, TerKeurst writes:

"It's because of his grace that Proverbs 31 Ministries' `Encouragement for Today' devotions were birthed. Each woman on our team has stared at her own mess needing a message of hope from a friend. From that place of being a friend who understands, our team writes. Throughout the pages of this Bible we share our moments of trials (such as hurling orange juice ten feet, ahem) that have been redeemed by God's triumphant grace. The Bible is filled with stories of real people with real problems just like ours. The names and places and situations may be different, but the emotions attached to their stories are the same."

In addition to the president's description of this Bible's purpose, there is a relatively short page of instructions explaining what is in the NIV Real-Life Devotional Bible for Women. This devotional Bible is arranged in 366 readings, one for each day of the year. Each devotional has a title and a scripture text corresponding to and located near the passage of the Bible being discussed. The devotions are numbered, but not dated so each one may be read whenever the reader can get to it. A list of additional related scriptural texts is located at the bottom of each article for further reading on the primary subject. The devotions have a handy note at the bottom of the page leading the reader to the next devotion.

If you are going to download this to a Kindle, don't bother. it is not formatted proprly for the Kindle and the devotions are very difficult to read because the writing is very light and so is the background. Fortunately I did not pay very much for this.

First, this is an NIV translation of the Bible, which is really more of a paraphrase, but it's very readable/accessible to a general audience.

There are 366 short daily devotions, which aren't organized by date, but there is a subject index in the back of the book if you're looking for a specific topic.

Most of the devotions are written from the point of view of young mothers - married women - but most are still mostly relevant for singles and older women as well. There are a lot of child-rearing anecdotes, which aren't very interesting, but they are usually in the context of making some point about living with the right attitude.

I still think that the classic NIV Devotional Bible is better, if only for the wider variety of devotional excerpts - which include poetry, and quotes from famous people, as well as just a broader scope in terms of life experiences -- there are devotions for singles, for old age, for adoption, for care-givers, and for youth. I also really like the Hope for Today Bible, which has devotions and sidebars on almost every page, and is relevant to anyone - man, woman, child, married, single or whatever. Also, I really like the Power for Life Bible, which has lessons, quotes, devotionals, prayers, and study questions, and more.

Overall, it's a nice bible. It's smaller than most bibles, so the print is also smaller. You might want to use this with a magnifying glass if you use bifocals or reading glasses.
