The Beginning 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth didn't have any shape. And it was empty. Darkness was over the surface of the ocean. At that time, the ocean covered the earth. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3God said, 'Let there be light.' And there was light. 4God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light 'day.' He called the darkness 'night.' There was evening, and there was morning. It was day one. 6God said, 'Let there be a huge space between the waters. Let it separate water from water.' 7And that's exactly what happened. God made the huge space between the waters. He separated the water that was under the space from the water that was above it. 8God called the huge space 'sky.' There was evening, and there was morning. It was day two. 9God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place. Let dry ground Genesis Introduction: Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The word Genesis means 'beginnings.' This book tells how the world began. Moses wrote the book of Genesis. He wrote about Adam and Eve's sin. He wrote about God's love. This book tells of God's special people. Some of these people are Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. The first five books of the Bible are called the books of the law. These books were God's instructions to the people of Israel. Genesis is one of these books because it tells how Israel became God's people. Outline of contents: All things begin (1:1--2:25) People sin (3:1--5:32) Noah and the flood (6:1--9:29) The tall tower (10:1--11:32) The life of Abraham (12:1--25:18) Isaac and his family (25:19--26:35) Jacob and his sons (27:1--37:1) The life of Joseph (37:2--50:26) GENESIS 1:10 2 appear.' And that's exactly what happened. 10God called the dry ground 'land.' He called the waters that were gathered together 'oceans.' And God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, 'Let the land produce plants. Let them bear their own seeds. And let there be trees on the land that bear fruit with seeds in it. Let each kind of plant or tree have its own kind of seeds.' And that's exactly what happened. 12 The land produced plants. Each kind of plant had its own kind of seeds. The land produced trees that bore fruit with seeds in it. Each kind of tree had its own kind of seeds. God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening, and there was morning. It was day three. 14God said, 'Let there be lights in the huge space of the sky. Let them separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs to mark off the seasons and the days and the years. 15 Let them serve as lights in the huge space of the sky to give light on the earth.' And that's exactly what happened. 16God made two great lights. He made the larger light to rule over the day. He made the smaller light to rule over the night. He also made the stars. 17God put the lights in the huge space of the sky to give light on the earth. 18He put them there to rule over the day and the night. He put them there to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening, and there was morning. It was day four. 20God said, 'Let the waters be filled with living things. Let birds fly above the earth across the huge space of the sky.' 21So God created the great creatures of the ocean. He created every living and moving thing that fills the waters. He created all kinds of them. He created every kind of bird that flies. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them. He said, 'Have little ones and increase your numbers. Fill the water in the oceans. Let there be more and more birds on the earth.' 23There was evening, and there was morning. It was day five. 24God said, 'Let the land produce all kinds of living creatures. Let there be livestock, and creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals. Let there be all kinds of them.' And that's exactly what happened. 25God made all kinds of wild animals. He made all kinds of livestock. He made all kinds of creatures that move along the ground. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, 'Let us make man in our likeness. 1659 LUKE 2:15 75 He wants us to be holy and godly as long as we live. 76'And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare the way for him. 77You will tell his people how they can be saved. You will tell them that their sins can be forgiven. 78All of that will happen because our God is tender and caring. His kindness will bring the rising sun to us from heaven. 79It will shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. It will guide our feet on the path of peace.' 80The child grew up, and his spirit became strong. He lived in the desert until he appeared openly to Israel. Jesus Is Born 2 In those days, Caesar Augustus made a law. It required that a list be made of everyone in the whole Roman world. 2It was the first time a list was made of the people while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be listed. 4So Joseph went also. He went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea. That is where Bethlehem, the town of David, was. Joseph went there because he belonged to the family line of David. 5He went there with Mary to be listed. Mary was engaged to him. She was expecting a baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for 7 year old boy., September 1, 2005
I wanted a leather bound Bible for my 7 year old boy that wasn't too childish, but that had large print. He always balks at even a 10pt. font size. It also had to be the NIRV translation. Not too picky, huh? This was the perfect fit. There are 10 or 15 full page pictures spread throughout the Bible, but that is about it. I was glad that this Bible was free from those annoying cartoony devotions that kids never read anyway. He is not embarrassed to carry it around because it has a plain navy blue cover, no obnoxious cartoons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for enthusiastic readers!, September 11, 2009
This review is from: NIrV Discoverer's Bible for Young Readers (Hardcover)
I bought this Bible for my 1st grader who is reading above grade level. We presented it to her with much pomp and circumstance and she was so pleased to have her very own bible that she can read. It's not a "storybook" and it's not my leather-bound grown up Bible. It has a few pictures but not that many. She doesn't seem to care. She is enjoying learning how to look up books, chapters and verses. This is a great exercise in itself. Several times a week, she gets her Bible and sits down at the table to read something. She does this completely on her own without my prompting and I am so pleased. Yesterday she wanted to read about Ruth since she was a woman in the Bible who had her very own book. I helped her find Ruth and she began reading it. Once she had read enough, she used her bookmark to save her place for the next time. It brings me such joy to see my daughter discovering the Bible on her own at age 6. That's exactly what I had hoped "The Discoverer's Bible" would accomplish!

This Bible uses simpler language but is a great first verse-by-verse Bible. The illustrations are also beautiful. Our daughter, who loves to read, has this Bible next to her bed and is reading voraciously. She has had story Bibles in the past, but she is definitely enjoying reading her Bible more now than she ever has. She is able to understand it on her own, and we are able to read from our Bibles together. What a beautiful gift to see the Word unlocked for her in this way.
