5.0 out of 5 stars This Good Book is a Good Book
Recommended Age: 3-5 (the back of the book recommends 4-8). I have to disagree with the statements that this book's descriptions diminish the intent of the stories. Reading some of the stories of the bible to a child at that age is tedious enough. To bog the storylines down with detail at that age bores the child. They don't exactly have the patience of a "saint". I agree...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good reader for preschoolers.
A good reader for preschoolers. May not be age appropriate for the 4-8 age group as indicated. The child's knowledge is assumed and the some stories aren't explained well. Illustrations are bright and simple - attractive to the young.

I agree that this is a good preschool version though. By eight years old I was using an adult Bible and memorizing passages. I imagine my son will probably be pretty bright at that point also. I seriously doubt he will be using this Bible except as a cross reference. As for the book itself the illustrations are rather entertaining and in some cases comedic. They are very colorful and eye-catching for a 3-5 year old. As stated before, the storylines are easy to follow and don't dwell to deeply which caters to night time reading when a child is most receptive to stories. Another plus is that it intelligently smoothes the corners on some of the more violent or touchy subjects within the text of a standard Bible. If you want the whole story including the graphic nature of Christ's death you should just buy a regular Bible and attempt a translation for you child. Personally, I don't feel a child the age of three necessarily needs a detailed description of what a scourging with a metal tipped whip is or the knowledge that spikes were driven into His hands. Allow children to be children and innocent for a few years. The brutality of human violence and stupidity will become painfully evident as they get older anyway. All in all I thought this was an excellent, entertaining, educational first Bible for teaching my son the Word of God. Hope those that read this post will find it to their liking also.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read with Me Bbile, May 20, 2004

This review is from: NIrV Read with Me Bible (Hardcover)
I picked this book up as an impulse buy about three years ago and began reading it to my then two year old daughter. At first I was a bit surprised by the violence of the stories. (The scarry snake in the garden of Eden, Abel killed his brother Cain, God flooded the world and everything living thing was wiped out, etc). After comparing it to a full version Bible, I realized how closely it follows the real text. And so we continued reading, with me doing some pretty heavy editing.

Well, my daughter just loved her Bible book. It wasn't long until we had read the whole thing cover to cover. Not only did we read it through another time or two, she then had her favorite stories that we read night after night.

Now that her brother has turned two, we've started from the beginning again. He's not quite as intranced as she was... I think we're dealing with a different level of attention span. But he's listening and it's quality time.

Everybody's right... the pictures in the book are great; the kids love them. It's not an "alls-happy-with-the-world" book of bible stories, but it is true to the full versions they'll be studying later.

I'm going back to buy a second book as ours is completely worn out and pages are falling out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Small Kids, November 25, 2004
By
This review is from: NIrV Read with Me Bible (Hardcover)
In Brazil I bought a copy of the Portuguese language edition of this book to read to my daughter, so when we moved to the United States it was only natural to seek it out in English. Since she's now seven I don't read out of this Bible to her any more, but from age 3-6 it was great, and I'll read it to my little boy once he's old enough to sit still. We read it cover to cover many times, and I'm convinced that this has helped to to establish a deep familiarity with the fundamental Biblical narrative. Buy it and read it to your kids or grandkids.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Son Loves This Bible, April 19, 2005
This review is from: NIrV Read with Me Bible (Hardcover)
My son is 4-years old and he can not get enough of these Bible stories night after night. He also has the Leap Pad version of one of the stories but he does not like that nearly as much. I feel that the stories are complete enough for his age but omit potentially disturbing details that simply are not needed until later. My husband and I also enjoy getting a little Bible refresher from a simpler point-of-view.

A good Bible for any young child and not bad for parents either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read, attractive summary of Bible stories., January 5, 1999
By A Customer
The stories are familiar, and the book is not a complete Bible. Struggling teen readers have read it like a "chapter book". Put it on a bookshelf with other books in a classroom or library and it will be pulled off and at least flipped through. It has also been chosen by adults who are emergent readers of English lacking the reading skills to delve into an NIV or Living Bible. The pictures look like animated drawings. Would make a nice gift for either type of reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves this book, she reads to her siblings, April 1, 2007
By
This review is from: NIrV Read with Me Bible (Hardcover)
My 7 year old loves this book. There is a ton of pictures and the words are easy enough for her to read on her own. When she gets stuck (after attempting sounding it out/etc.) she'll spell th word and I'll tell her it, then she'll say it herself. She usually remebers for next time the word appears. She reads THIS BOOK to her younger 6 year old twin brothers and 4 year old sister. her older sister (9) will usually read the ACTUAL bible to all of them after a story or two is heard from this book.

Our church purchased multiple copies of this book to give out at the end of Vacation Bible School to the families who had came. What a blessing it was! I was afraid that it might be too immature for the older kids (ages 9-10), but their families reported that they had read it, stayed VERY interested, and were telling them their favorite stories. The children who attended were between the ages of 3 all the way to 17. The artist, Dennis Jones, is truly God-inspired. He has such wonderful talent- the pictures are incredibly interesting and often tell more about the Bible story than is even revealed in the text of this Bible. This book also contains a glossary at the end of the book to explain words that the children would not understand, but should- "Words You Should Know." I love the breadth of material that is in this collection. Many stories that aren't usually included in Bible story collections are here. There are 58 Old Testament stories and 47 New Testament stories, ranging from one page to eight pages long. Most pages have only 6-8 lines of text and a vivid picture displayed. I have a four year old who reads, and she can read this book with some help on some of the larger words. It is a well-written, accurate, and captivating book. I highly recommend its use with children to learn many of the good stories in the Bible.

I highly recommend this starter Bible (Bible stories). It has well worded stories and fantastic illustrations. Even though not all the illustrations are allowed on Amazon.com, I can vouch that they are all very vivid and they seem to pop off the page. Of course, they are not verse for verse, they are stories, and as with all stories you get what the author thought was most important to have included in the story. Well worth the $$$.

We bought this Bible simply because of its illustrations. They are so bright and colorful and sometimes downright hilarious. The stories are simple and DO sometimes skip certain details you'll find in Bibles for older kids or adults, but we think it's very age appropriate.
