The National Outdoor Leadership School's official guide to finding your way in the wilderness

Covers all navigational techniques, from map and compass to GPS and gives instructions on taking bearings and planning routes on USGS maps

Up-to-date information on tools, equipment, and software

For wilderness travelers, good navigation ability can mean the difference between a successful day hike and an unplanned overnight stay. Based on the curriculum of the National Outdoor Leadership School, NOLS Wilderness Navigation gives you the skills you need to confidently find your way on and off the trail. Included here are methods for orienting yourself by the sun and the stars alone, easy-to-follow explanations of map and compass techniques, and advice on using an altimeter. There's also a comprehensive section on using GPS technology-without becoming dependent on it. Exercises at the end of each chapter help readers gradually develop their skills and build their confidence.

This review is from: NOLS Wilderness Navigation (NOLS Library) (Paperback)
I have spent 18 years in the Army and found one picture on one page helpful. I bought this book just to learn how to learn to read lat long and UTM Grids, maybe i am trying to ever complicate things in my mind but the book does a better job explaining the history grid lines then how to find your position with them

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice book for the BEGINNER, October 27, 2007
This review is from: NOLS Wilderness Navigation (NOLS Library) (Paperback)
This is a decent book for the beginner that has little experience with land navigation; some of the books in this genre that are offered here are much better, including some for the beginner. I have several land navigation/compass/orienteering books, picked up thinking that I might learn something. I thought I would give this a try, as NOLs Wilderness Medicine book is actually useful. Truth be told, if you have the U.S. Army's Land Navigation FM, you've got the best available, in my opinion. That is to say, if you have solid military land navigation skills, these books won't teach you much of anything new, but they're great for the noncombatants in your life, as they tend to break it down and use words geared to civilian use.
