Americana legend Norman Rockwell walked into the offices of The Saturday Evening Post in 1916, and walked out as the new cover art illustrator for America s favorite magazine. So began Rockwell s career and the unique love affair between the artist and the American public - spanning five decades, over 300 magazine covers and many more acclaimed works (some as Art Director for Boys Life Magazine).
Norman Rockwell s paintings have become the iconic images of American Art and life, bridging the era from the horse and buggy to the landing of a man on the moon. In his portraits of daily life, he chronicled everyday people while capturing essential truths about human strength and weakness, success and failure.
Some of his everlasting works include The Golden Rule, The Four Freedoms Series (Freedom of Worship, Freedom of Want [the Thanksgiving Scene], Freedom of Speech and Freedom From Fear), Rosie the Riveter, The Gossips, Southern Justice, Triple Portrait and the important The Problem We All Live With, depicting a little girl walking to a newly desegregated school with an escort of four large US marshals.
This DVD presentation proves, when speaking of a Rockwell painting, one can truly say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This review is from: NORMAN ROCKWELL: An American Portrait (DVD)
Norman Rockwell: An American Portrait is a solidly researched and splendidly presented DVD documentary of Norman Rockwell, the American artist whose timeless caricatures became immortalized in more than 300 covers of the Saturday Evening Post -- among countless other works. The rich depths of his art (portraying all the moods and facets of humanity including success and failure alike), as well as the life and career of the man himself, are informatively and authoritatively covered in this simply outstanding presentation which originally aired as a PBS special. An excellent and very highly recommended celebration of a great artist's life and legacy, including additional features such as an art gallery and music selections from T. K. Blue and Nigel Clark, Norman Rockwell: An American Portrait is a full color, 60 minute DVD which would enhance any personal, school, or community collection.

A Great Biography, of a great talent.,

This review is from: NORMAN ROCKWELL: An American Portrait (DVD)
Norman Rockwell has always been one of my favorite artists. This PBS documentary is very well done.
From still shots of his portraits, to interviews with the people that new Rockwell best, (including his assistant, and fellow art schoolmates) you really get a feel for the wonderful artist. Norman Rockwell wasn't just a painter, he was a very gifted story teller. Each of his painting told a story, or at least made you think of one as you viewed it. To sum up Rockwell in just one word, it would have to be "America". He truly had his finger on the pulse of the every changing times, then skewed them into a world he wanted to live in. There is great behind the scenes footage of Rockwell working away. Top notch narration by Mason Adams (Think "With a name like Smuckers, it has to be good). Erma Bombeck also gives her opinion of selected Rockwell works, as well as the man himself. If you are a fan of Rockwell this is a must see. Happy Watching!
