Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Tim Allen, star of the hit sitcom Home Improvement, takes on quantum philosophy, intergender relationships, and the male midlife crisis in a joke-filled (but ultimately serious) "weekend in the life" narrative. It's an odd combination, shifting from enthusiastic gushing over restored sports cars to earnest elaborations upon Deepak Chopra and Fritjof Capra, but Allen manages to pull it off. If you're expecting a standard unchallenging celebrity-penned "book," or a fluff-filled "memoir," you're going to be quite surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tool Man Delivers!, August 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I'M NOT REALLY HERE (Mass Market Paperback)
One word that describes this book best? Deep. Tim Allen talks about the meaning of life and if we're really here or not (So, now do you understand the title?). "I'm Not Really Here" isn't as funny as his first book, but it's a side of the tool man that you definitely don't see while watching "Home Improvement." Buy this book today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a pleasant surprise, June 14, 2002

After reading this book, I have a new and better view of Tim Allen. This review is also to counter the mindless and sometimes rediculous negative reviews by some Amazon.com contributors. Tim's first book was much more comedy oriented. If this had been his first book, the masses would not have believed it was written by Tim Allen, the grunting, knuckle-dragging man-nut from television comedy. Mr Allen presents us with a deep, thought provoking and emotional (yes, there WAS some real emotion here) journey with a douse of fiction which creates an interesting and truly good read. I was thoroughly entranced with this book, and it was not difficult to understand. It did not require much thought or concentration to get in to, yet also did not require that you throw logic out the window to enjoy. Kudos to Mr. Allen for creating a beautiful piece of literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tim Allen has my gratitude for a life changing book, May 7, 2001

I have read all of these reviews, and am very surprised by some of them. This book is a personal journey for Tim Allen. One he invited us to come along for. No, it is not the intense humor of his first book, and no it is not a Quantum Physics text book. Nor do I think it was meant to rival anything by David Bohm. Actually he seems to be in awe of Mr. Bohm. This is a deep book which will speak to those open to it. It is better off left alone by those who cannot grasp it, or better yet, are not ready to, as well as those who have forgotten their path and feel that they are too far beyond it. What I found in this book was an intelligent questioning person who has pushed himself to grow immensely. I do not think Mr. Allen meant to rival great minds in Quantum Physics, merely to show us what can happen to us if we explore something outside our everyday humdrum existence as he has. If you are looking for a repeat of his first book, open yourself and try something new. If you are into Quantum Physics, open it and remember your roots, and don't take yourself so seriously, (another message in this book). Open your mind and you will love this book.
