I had noticed that Nova had updated this machine from the earlier 12 inch Comet II and had corrected some of the complaints that earlier models had, including a reinforced composite headstock guard. I ordered this lathe with the extension bed, and after building a stand to accommodate both, I set up the lathe and turned a few small projects. I'm extremely pleased with how quiet the lathe runs. The belt is easy to change from one speed range to another and the variable speed works as advertised. The headstock guard, even though recently upgraded, arrived slightly cracked from shipping but it wasn't a show stopper. I contacted Teknatool and they immediately replaced the headstock guard. My only complaint is that the only tool rest that came with the lathe is a 6" tool rest. I have a need for either a 9" or 12" tool rest, and in order to find one of the right size for a midi lathe, I will have to get a component rest such as sold by Woodcraft or Lee Valley at considerable more expense.

This is my first lathe, and although I didn't buy it here on Amazon I buy almost everything on Amazon and personally rely on the reviews here and saw there were only a couple of reviews and thought I would throw in my lot.
When ordering from Teknatool they shipped the lathe in a double box and packed in Styrofoam. Both lathes I got were in good shape and no problems with packaging in my experience.
After following the 30 minute motor break in period that is suggested in the manual I put on the chuck and let it run another twenty or so minutes just for some overkill. I figured it couldn't hurt.
My first bowl I tuned was from a piece of cherry and I turned it in the natural edge orientation. The piece was probably 10 inches round by 6 thick. The lathe handled the size and weight without any trouble. I would highly suggest either making sure you get your wood centered well for a lathe this small. Not just in the center physically but many times wood is heavier in one area so the piece needs to be centered according to weight. There are many ways to figure out center. I usually put the piece on the spur and tail stock (between centers) in what is the physical center and just barely tighten the tail stock up to the piece of wood so the wood can spin freely. The heavy side will rotate to the bottom, then I move the heavy side up and repeat until the wood blank no longer rotates the heavy side to the bottom. Like I said though there are other methods and even videos online on how to center a wood blank. This lathe is only about 85 lbs so it doesn't take a lot of weight to make it hop around if you are out of balance at all.

Variable speed, reversible, locking and indexing spindle, what's not to like? After setup, did have to turn it on and let it run for about 45 minutes to break in the motor, but that wasn't any big deal. I did extend the feet under the headstock out on a 10 inch piece of angle iron, 4 inches on center was just too narrow to apply much pressure at the spindle. Other than that modification, this is a big step up from my old Jet 10x14 VS with no reverse or locking spindle. I've only turned a few things, so far, but it is living up to all my expectations. Only uncorrectable complaint is the short throw on the tail stock screw, which is half that of the old Jet. Expect I'll get used to it.

I was really excited to receive my lathe...finally, I could start some turning projects. After setup, the first thing I noticed was that the headstock and tailstock were misalinged by about 1 mm. I called the tech line and learned that all the tech people were at some big Lathe conference. There was nothing in the manual that came with the machine that would tell me how to fix the problem. Disappointed, I went ahead and started using it...so far, I think the projects have turned out pretty good. However, for the last couple of weeks, I have been hearing rumbling noises emanating from the headstock spindle area. I made a video recording of the machine running making the noise. I sent that to the Teknatool Help Desk. First, the person who replied said there was no video attached. I resent the video in a second message. In that message I guess I made the mistake (in retrospect) of telling the help desk that I had applied some machine oil to the area of the outside spindle bearing (in the rear of the headstock) which had caused the noise to cease. I never heard back from tech support about the video or why the bearing was making that noise. So far, I apply a bit of oil to the spindle bearing area (front and back) when I use it on a daily basis. I am disappointed that the bearing(s) have given up so soon (Purchased Mid May, 2013) and that there has been no followup from Teknatool support. If they still didn't get the video, it is not because I didn't send it....it was likely stripped from the email by their email spam guard or some such software. Other than that, I have enjoyed working with the machine. Turning a 3"X3"X12" spindle was an adventure...I had to work at the lowest speed possible...too much vibration when I tried raising the speed.Read more ›
