Editorial Reviews

This is fact: Marilyn Sheppard was murdered in 1954. The rest of the crime is a haunting question mark. The Sheppard case led to the infamous trial—and re-trial—of her husband, Dr. Sam Sheppard, and launched the legal career of lawyer F. Lee Bailey. But who was the killer? Dr. Sheppard's insistence that a mysterious stranger was the real murderer led to his eventual acquittal years after the murder and inspired the plot of The Fugitive. Now, nearly 50 years later, NOVA reopens America's most intriguing unsolved murder case.

Play modern-day detective with a detailed reconstruction of the Sheppard house, access little-known evidence, and hear insights from such forensic experts as DNA specialist Barry Scheck, a member of O.J. Simpson's legal "Dream Team." Like an intricate puzzle, clues come together to overturn previous assumptions about the killer and point to an entirely new, still unknown, suspect. If you love a good mystery, you'll be fascinated by The Killer's Trail.

My ninth grade students really enjoyed watching this video at the end of our forensic science unit! I teach a short forensic science unit at the end of the year and I wanted a video to show to the students that demonstrated how forensics work in the real world. Every student came to class the second day and asked if we would finish the video. This video related many of the areas we studied and led to a great discussion of forensics.

I have shown this video to my Forensic Science class & think it's great. It does a good job showing how bloodstain pattern analysis can be used to recreate the sequence of events in a crime (even decades later!). It also brings in some basic DNA type testing and shows how DNA isn't always perfect (given the quality & quantity of DNA the type of test was a bit different and not as good as gel electrophoresis where you see the banding patterns).

As the other reviewer mentioned, it is a little slow in parts, and they take awhile to reveal some information. They definitely favor the idea that Sam Sheppard was innocent and do not address the idea that it could have been a hired hit (the blood analysis pretty much shows Sheppard did not commit the killing himself). I'm not saying he did, but it would be nice if that theory was addressed.

Overall, I would not call this "riveting," but it is interesting and a great addition to my class.

I bought this to show my forensic students after I taught an unit on blood and blood spatter. It clearly illustrates how scientists use blood analysis to discover truths of a mystery. Would recommend. My kids are 7th and 8th graders.
