5.0 out of 5 stars PBS at its best August 23, 2010
By Rhian
If there's one thing PBS does well, it's staying down the middle. This documentary never sets out trying to prove or disprove the Bible. It just tells the story, completely factual. It doesn't offer 'what if's' or goes half the program on one side then shifts to the other; it just is. This movie tells how archeologists have attempted finding the sites and people of some of the Bible's stories and how they either failed or succeeded. Plain and simple. It tells you common theories held by the scientific community, but never tries debunking them or proving them. If the theory was proven, it will tell you, but it doesn't set out with any politicl or religious angle in mind. Granted, there will always be at least one person who will manage to find fault with everything, but for the most part, no matter which side of the religious fence you fall, most people will find this is a very educational, entertaining, and non-offensive program. I highly reccomend this documentary to anyone wanting to learn a little about the history behind the scripture; you may find it very enlightening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent application of the scientific method November 2, 2009

Nova did a superb job of featuring the scientists who are unearthing ancient biblical sites and placing artifacts on a timeline in relation to biblical stories. It reveals how carbon dating works within archeology and how new archeological sites are shedding new light on the old testament. It also discusses the theory of five principal teams who wrote the old testament. I found it refreshing and definitely worth adding to my DVD library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Between Hollywood and Sunday School April 25, 2009
Somewhere between Hollywood and Sunday school lies "The Bible's Buried Secrets." Neither an attempt to prove nor disprove the holy scriptures, it aims rather to triangulate by searching the historical and archeological record for independent evidence that could verify the most famous episodes of the Old Testament. Perhaps most illuminating is the theory of the real story behind the Exodus (and especially intriguing for fans like myself of Cecil B. DeMille's epic 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments"). In short, highly recommended for believers and nonbelievers alike.

Moving from archaeological site to site in Israel and Egypt, this program presents what modern archaeology has to tell us about the Old Testament, particularly the Book of Exodus, in a remarkably objective manner. People who view the Bible as being the Word of God may be offended by portions of it, but those of a more inquisitive mind are likely to be intrigued. I was particularly impressed by the Israeli archaeologists, a most intelligent and inquisitive group (I am not Jewish) and found the ultimate (tentative) conclusion about the source of the Jews compelling. Another star in NOVA's crown.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film November 8, 2010
By Todd
This NOVA film weaves together a narrative that many scholars believe explains how the Hebrew Bible came to be in its present form. Relevant archeological finds are presented which make for a fascinating and interesting presentation.

The film does not discuss the Christian New Testament but don't let that keep you from this film. It is 2hrs well spent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Only from Nova April 27, 2011
I have watched many hours of programing exploring the history of the land and peoples of the middle east. This program, unlike most of them, does not start out with a pre-conceived position and try to prove it. The producers simply look at the evidence found by the archeologists and let them present the conclusions drawn from what they find. It is fortunate for them, and us, that the ancient Egyptians wrote their history in stone.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great pbs program February 23, 2009
The Bible's Buried Secrets is another great PBS program. It has good scholarly discussions on the origin of the Hebrew Testament. It has a few deleted scenes as well as a "making of" scenes: from computer image to final scene. Nova has educator materials for study as well.

It is amazing that a program like NOVA would admit that the discoveries on the ground are tending to support the age old Biblical story. Good tape, i recommend it.
