His head shaped like an ear of elote (corn), a strange visage stares from beneath arched brows. Alex Lozano takes his inspiration from Mexico's pre-Hispanic civilizations to create this extraordinary mask. "This is a representation of Tecpatl, which is Nahuatl for "flint," the artist explains. "It is one of the glyphs representing the days of the Aztec calendar. Most appear in profile, so I tried to depict it from the front to make it different from the usual illustrations." Fashioned by hand from clay, this work offers a faithful glimpse of Mexico's ancient symbols.
