NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Working with coconut shells, Ading transforms them into the traditional Latin American maracas, a kind of rattle. He adorns the polished surface with Balinese lele, a slender fresh water fish. The handle is carved of pinewood. Artisan Info: "Ading is a short and simple name my parent gave me. My life is as simple as my name, but my life shouldn't be as short as it is. I was born on October 17, 1966 in West Java province. Playing traditional music is my hobby; I can play most of the traditional instruments. At one point I said to myself, 'Why can't I make those traditional instruments by my own hand?' Then I went about learning how to make them, and in 1991 I opened my own art shop. In 1999 I married a beautiful Javanese woman. She is very helpful in my work - she is the one who watches my art shop in the afternoon. She is also a good wife to me; she makes my work in the shop possible. "In making various kinds of traditional musical instruments, I use mahogany wood, jackfruit wood, and bamboo. It needs patience and practice to get the right tone from each musical instrument. I'm very grateful for what Novica is doing in promoting my works to the whole world."
